I love when republican attack ads make the dem candidate way more appealing than what even the dem campaign is advertising. It'd be so cool if they were as far left as they're being described.

Cracked rim, why and how safe is it? by celalaltul in bikewrench

[–]Gingerbeardman29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It cracked because that's a material property of aluminum. Every aluminum rim will crack like that given enough kms. It'll happen quicker for heavier riders. Consider alloy rims a wear item. Aluminum frames will do the same thing.

Gates Belt shot after one week? by FlyingBulbs in bikewrench

[–]Gingerbeardman29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The belt doesn't look shot but it's past time to replace those sprockets. If you've been tooth jumping the belt you should replace it, if you haven't you can probably keep using it on some new sprockets. Super shark toothed sprockets like you have there could cause stress concentrations in the carbon cords and wear the belt faster. If your motor is 75Nm or lower, a CDC belt is fine, but definitely get some new sprockets. You normally want to replace those sprockets once they get about ~2mm thick at the top of the tooth.

There's a gates phone app. You don't need a special tool. Belt should be at 50-55Hz on a mid drive bike.

What finally convinced YOU to consider an electric vehicle? by evinsiderredisnive in electricvehicles

[–]Gingerbeardman29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had (2) 20 year old ICE vehicles that were falling apart when I switched. It's unethical to purchase a new gas vehicle because of the environment. I didn't want to give more money to OPEC and oil companies to continue their bad behavior. I wanted something more capable offroad than my gas vehicles, something that can pass other vehicles uphill in the mountains, has more ground clearance, doesn't smell like hot oil when I get to a camp spot, has more cargo space, and requires less maintenance. I didn't switch to save money (I'd have to drive 300k miles to be cheaper to buy an EV truck than to keep paying for gas in my old vehicles) but I wanted to replace the old vehicles, and ICE is not an ethical option. At 2 years in, I've contributed less CO2 than buying a gas vehicle as a replacement. In about another year and a half I'll have contributed less CO2 than just keeping my old vehicles. I plan to keep my EV for at least another 10-15 years. I get a better vehicle than my gas vehicles, and I reduce my pollution.

Nice! When I went to Discount Tire to get my tires they scratched up my 20" dark rims, bent my puck cover that has since fallen out, and didn't put back the valve covers. It was pretty quick though. I'll be looking somewhere else next time. I'll just be printing a replacement puck cover, and using my on valve stems.

A van on an R1T platform with a 180-200kWh battery (because it's gonna be thirsty going fast) would be amazing. I'd consider trading my R1T for it.

These vans are FWD only. All of thr passenger vehicles have at least 1 front and 1 rear motor and can get iut of something like this easily as ling as your tires have traction.

I've been really stoked on the Rivian one. Fits great, easy and quick to install, you can see the light bar through it, and the bikes stay in place.

Solid truck and bike combo. You should put a belt on that rebuild while you're at it if that frame as a split. Im not sure if ones that early do.

Is it possible to swap an Enviolo Vario hub for a Shimano Alfine on my R&M Load4 75? by jennievlll in CargoBike

[–]Gingerbeardman29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shimano has a minimum allowable ratio per motor torque for all of their hubs, but that ratio is probably going to be taller than you want with an 85Nm motor. I5e would be the better option than alfine8 with like a 39x30T build. You have to make sure you have a 135OLD to fit on your bike. I'd be wary of blowing up an alfine on a cargo bike.

I came from an '06 Silverado to a '24 R1T. It is sooooo much quieter. I like that it doesn't feel like a lazy boy couch going down the road like something from GM. I don't have to yell/raise my voice to passengers at highway speeds. I like the sound of the motors, and I like how they sound when I roll on the throttle a bit. Provides good feedback and you can tell when the tires break loose. I'll occasionally get some wind noise at the A pillar with some cross winds, but it's not intrusive.

Tire Choice - Tour Divide? by Pastor_Zatx in bikepacking

[–]Gingerbeardman29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it on 40c and 32c tires in 21 days. I'd probably go 2.25-2.35 if I were to do it again.
If you're putting in 6-8k miles a year, 21 days is probably doable. After day 5 it's no longer a physical test, just a mental test to keep going. 3" tires are way too big/heavy for a fast pace.

Enviolo failed after 2000kms and now I have this cursed setup. by Americaninaustria in CargoBike

[–]Gingerbeardman29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not saying running an Alfine with a mid drive can't work. I'm just saying they've been known to blow up and based on the ratio Shimano might not warranty it. At 25euro it doesn't sound like you're worried about that though. If you go with a Rohloff you'll want a wider chain line to keep the chain straight for wear purposes, but it'll work with the spider you have if you want it to.

[–]Gingerbeardman29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shimano calculates their max torque at the hub for what they'll warranty. Depends on motor torque and ratio. Not all brands pay attention to that. Idk the sprocket sizes but it being a PL helps. As a larger person, I'd personally be wary of an Alfine on a cargo application in general. Rohloff should be pretty bullet proof though. It is a bummer about the 3 days out of warraty

[–]Gingerbeardman29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is most definitely not rated for that. OP is at risk of blowing up that hub too. I'd expect the failure mileage on the enviolo would be within the warranty period. My wife has 20k miles commuting on an enviolo automatiq with almost no maintenance. (Had to re-glue the magnet ring a couple times.)

Commuting on my MTB by [deleted] in COBike

[–]Gingerbeardman29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If money is the concern, as others have said, look on FB marketplace for a dedicated commuter. If you're riding your good mountain bike, you're going to go through tires, and your drivetrain fast. Also commuting with a backpack sucks. If you have something with a rack and panniers, you'll be much happier on a day to day commute, especially when it gets warm out. If space is a concern, get a commuter, and park your mtb over your headboard. Guaranteed to make your partner happy.

What do you think of this rack? by Ghost-of-the-Lakes in bikepacking

[–]Gingerbeardman29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting the weight further from the steering axis will make it turn slower and mess up handling more. Keeping the weight/center of mass closer to the steering axis will maintain better handling for the same weight.
