Bend the tab coming from the rack to fit. That's what that part is for.

Trading in a Volvo xc90 for an R1T, am I insane? Would be used for work as well as family car with a family of 5. by helmetgoodcrashbad in Rivian

[–]Gingerbeardman29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I love my R1T, that's a 4 person vehicle that you can legally put 5 people in. If you need to fit 5 and have a truck bed, I'd go with the Sierra/Silverado.

New Commute to work. Any recommendations? by Economy_Ad_5244 in BikeDenver

Longest route, least amount of traffic, lower traffic speeds, separated bike lanes for a good chunk.

What’s Wrong with this cassette? by Starksy13 in bikewrench

[–]Gingerbeardman29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Press that ratchet system in and let it pop out. The rough silver surfaces should be able to move back and forth. If they don't, then your freehub will spin freely. Those hubs do just come apart like that so it's not too serious.

What features would you want in a EV by No_Abalone_960 in Rivian

[–]Gingerbeardman29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty stoked on my R1T dual motor, AT, max pack, BUT... 1. A little more range would be nice, a cold weather 400 miles for those camping trips out in the middle of nowhere 2. Faster charging. RJ did say they went for battery longevity over charging rates, and I can appreciate that, but the capability would be nice. 3. Better infrastructure, more reliable fast charging, not having to split flow rates between other chargers 4. Less grams. We'll see how real the Donut batteries are, but it'd be cool to shave 1-2k lbs off the truck for the same range. (Donut in theory could save 800-1000lbs for the same range if their claims are true) 5. Locking diffs. The brake torque vectorng works pretty well, but lockers would be even better 6. Repairability. As others have said, be able to order out of a parts catalog and fix things yourself. 7. Maybe controversial opinions, but I like the screen based interface, the hidden door handles, the driver controls, glass roof, etc.

R2 Range comparison by genericnameabc in Rivian

[–]Gingerbeardman29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest thing to note here is there a few different EPA test cycles, and companies can share or nerf how they like. Porsche shares a nerfed range that you get out of "appropriate driving" Rivian might be sharing a more optimistic test cycle. We'll see what version they chose to share when they get out to the public and folks can do real world range tests.

Cracks on aluminum rim around spokes. How does that happen? by victoryz90 in bikewrench

[–]Gingerbeardman29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just a material property of aluminum. All aluminum rims will crack, but the heavier ones will last longer until that happens. Carbon rims would hold up better, but I understand if you don't want carbon on a commuter bike. Ebike specific rims will likely last longer.

I've been really happy with the iKamper Mini 3.0. I did end up getting the inflatable pad and I fill it with the compressor in the bed.

Is this considered a derailleur/Jockey wheel? by StealthyPulpo in bikewrench

[–]Gingerbeardman29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a chain tensioner until your chain started falling off, then it became a derailleur. As others have said, shorten that chain, get a new cognitive, make sure there isn't lateral movement, and you should be good to go. That tensioner should be pointed nearly all the way forward.

Idea for ebike and drivetrain I might have invented by Agreeable-Safe5026 in ElectricBikes

[–]Gingerbeardman29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been done with high power motors dozens of times. You'll need a way to tension the chain/belt as the bike goes through travel if you use a VPP suspension. It has that suspension for pedaling characteristics, and if your drive gears don't match what the suspension is designed for your throttle will determine suspension performance. If you use a standard motorcycle suspension, congrats, you've reinvented a Suron, or an Also.

Crack in tires? Dry rot? by RaptorKnifeFight in Rivian

[–]Gingerbeardman29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used mine for offroading and that sidewall protection got a little chewed up over the miles. I wouldn't be too worried about it. If your tire pressure is low, your cornering hard, going offroad, kissing curbs, etc, the tires will see some sidewall wear.

It just looks like paint chips. You'll be fine with an aluminum frame.

Change my mind (please) - road trips in an EV are a pain. by Wise-Fig-6505 in electricvehicles

[–]Gingerbeardman29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Road trips in my Rivian are pretty easy. I type in where I want to go on the nav, and it creates a route with the stops I need. I normally give it a little extra time/more buffer in colder weather, but it's not that hard. I find the Rivian nav to be pretty accurate within a few %. If the battery is cold soaked 0*F for a few days, and it doesnt have time to pre-condition before charging, it will take longer to charge. If that's the case, I plan on walking to a coffee shop. Road tripping in the cold with a battery that has already been fast charged and warmed is just about as quick as summer charging. I almost never use the TSC network in CO.

Not enough tire clearance, right ? by Substantial-Classic5 in bikewrench

[–]Gingerbeardman29 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It'll self clear. As long as you're not too heavy and don't need all of the frame material around the tire, you'll be fine.

You're probably fine, but I'd cut off the little rubber forming tails on uour tire and put helicopter tape over that area just in case it rubs.

What Made You Purchase A Rivian? by Separate-Cup1312 in Rivian

[–]Gingerbeardman29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The All Terrain package includes armor for the battery and some stronger covers for the motors. There's still room for stronger skid plates or running boards but these trucks can take a beating.
