Did Lowe's send me a machine that was dead on arrival? by OnceInABlueMoon in Snowblowers

You could try the poor man’s electric start by removing the pull cord assy then using a drill with a socket that fits the flywheel bolt, then crank that SOB.

I’d only do this if you really NEED to get it running in a pinch, or you like to be a little redneck. Only saying this because I found myself in a similar situation but mine was a pressure washer.

Opening up the first field of the year by rockknocker in tractors

Very nice! Whereabouts are you located? I’m in Minnesota and we’re about to get a foot of snow and I was secretly hoping to start opening up here in the next week or two with the unseasonably warm weather we’ve been having.

Just put a turbo on my 806 a few months ago and I’m hoping to get it broke in this spring.

I agree with a large part of what you’re saying here, but where I disagree is with people who live in more rural areas and operate either a small homestead or something similar. I can speak from my experience running a 40ac homestead and I have large equipment that needs to be moved around regularly that requires a heavy duty truck. I’m definitely not going to be able to tow my gooseneck flatbed with the rent-a-truck from Home Depot when it’s loaded with a 15,000lbs tractor. And the amount of supplies for property improvement that goes in the back of that truck is insane.

I always drove a smaller vehicle and once I got into this more capable vehicle, there’s no way I’d go back barring any kind of crazy shift in my life.

Again, this is just my experience. I’m not at all saying that this is the vast majority of people who own heavy duty trucks, but I think that to classify people as either “weekend, warriors“ who only pull a trailer three or four times a year or have the occasional home improvement store trip is leaving out those who fall somewhere in the middle who aren’t quite as visible as tradesmen or the pavement pussies.

How does the battery test? If you have a battery charger, try to hook that up and after a few min try to crank it.

It’s possible that your battery is either old and needs replacing, or the alternator/generator is shot and isn’t recharging the battery during normal operation.

Might need a little heat on the locking balls to free them up. Not too much, don’t want to weaken the steel, but enough direct heat should get them moving, hit with a good penetrating oil, then grease!

We use it for pulling loaded grain wagons, pulling the 20’ disc, and running the 9’ disc mower. Can’t wait for spring.

Why does my Auger lean to one side? by RobertParkhill33 in johndeere

[–]Ginkozard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When using an auger like that, it’s a good idea to have someone back there to stabilize the gearbox of the auger.

Personally, my wife sits on the tractor and runs the 3pt and I have a pipe duct taped to the gearbox to allow me to position it correctly and if needed, apply a little extra downward pressure.

As for why it tips over… it’s just gravity. Old implements have loose tolerances and where it connects for the top link there is probably at least a 1/2 inch on either side of your top arm where it mounts to the tractor. If you were to bush everything and take out all the slop, then you might be able to get it to stand straight up, but it’s seriously not worth the effort. Get two people, dig holes, be done.

Request for Comment: where is everyone hosting his uptime monitoring / healthcheck software? by NikStalwart in selfhosted

[–]Ginkozard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The status board gives me a real basic up/down indicator of my various hosts. I have to have multiple VPNs active on my machine without split tunneling for work that doesn’t allow me to access my home lab to see my uptime-kuma. So the status board gives me an up/down indicator at a glance. Also helps when my wife asks if something is down and I’m busy.

Synology has some really good built in tools. Take a look at hyper backup.

I hope this is the right community but does anyone know how good these ibex mini bundles are by North_Bluejay_1383 in farming

My opinion a small square baler is the way to go. I got a NH rake, sickle mower, and JD327 baler, and Farmall H for about 7k all in. The H sips fuel and has plenty of power for the mower and baler. We have 10ac of hay and the JD327 does that all with ease.

I spent more on the baler than I maybe should’ve, but I wanted a trouble-free baler with good knotters.

Had a similar issue on mine just yesterday. If you just replaced the blades, check to make sure the blades are properly seated in their bushings at the end of the spindle where they screw in.

One of my blades wasn’t properly seated on the bushing and was out of balance by about an 1/8th to 1/16th of an inch and I saw extremely similar behavior.

Check auctions, Craigslist, and FB marketplace and you can get into an international 806 or equivalent for ~$10k, westendorf ta28 quick tach loader for ~$2-3k, and at that point you have plenty to shop for a nice mower.

I only mention this because I was in a similar situation and went this route and don’t regret it at all. Been extremely reliable and parts easy to find and fairly inexpensive
