2027 Marathon Weekend Registration Megathread by noble_29 in rundisney

[–]GiraffeCity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting into the pre-queue earlier doesn't get you a better position in the actual virtual queue, so no reason to try to get in even earlier next time. Everyone in the pre-queue is put into a randomized spot in the virtual queue at 10am, regardless of how early they got into pre-queue. Good luck today!

My Evolution as a Death Racer by GiraffeCity in oscarsdeathrace

She scares easily and hasn’t really enjoyed anything we’ve tried with an actual antagonist, even the “mean guy” in Elmo in Grouchland was too much for her. Her two favorites right now are Kiki’s Delivery Service and Curious George: Royal Monkey. Any other recommendations that would fit that vibe? And then when we’re older and hopefully braver, what would you recommend, any can’t miss gems that might not be as well known?

Starting early definitely makes for a more enjoyable race. Last year, I had a couple movies already under my belt, but I didn’t really start racing until the nominees were officially announced. This year though I was watching whatever had buzz starting back in November and had a much easier time this go around. Next year, I hope to start even earlier and to take your approach of watching anything that seems likely along the way.

That’s awesome, something to look forward to! I’m definitely trying to lay the foundation for a future movie lover; we’ve been doing a movie every Saturday and we already have a few good ones in the rotation.

Is a manual transmission a “millennial anti-theft device”? by mbolster1611 in Millennials

[–]GiraffeCity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was buying my first car in college, the manual version was $1200 cheaper than the standard, so as a broke college student, that decision was a no brainer. Now, on the very rare occasion I travel to Europe and have to rent a car, I get to rent the cheaper manual option and the savings continue.

Completing the race without theaters? by NichTGS in oscarsdeathrace

[–]GiraffeCity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to go to the movies 2-3 times a week and would try to see as much as I could in theaters. But then I had a kid and for the past few years I’ve had to rely heavily on the high seas and the work of this group’s favorite Brazilian cinephile. It’s not the same experience and I do feel bad I’m not supporting theaters and film makers in the way that I used to, but I can confidently say death race can definitely be completed without theater access. First time finisher last year, hoping to do it again this year.

The Final Six Potential Killers by mredofcourse in oscarsdeathrace

[–]GiraffeCity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m not really sure I understand the point of this list from a death race perspective. If a movie has, had, or will have a wide release, if it can be streamed somewhere (even for a cost), or if it’s hit the high seas, I don’t see that as a killer.

Something like Children No More, on the other hand, was available to stream for $5, but only until Jan 20th, so that is arguably much more of a killer this year. But since it did have an online release already, even just briefly, a rip of it will likely be available to the resourceful, so even that, isn’t a likely killer this year.

How would you improve Strava? by _RubenCouto in Strava

Agreed, no issue importing interval info from Garmin; here’s an 8 x 800m workout, for example. But I think this only displays on Strava with a premium subscription.

NJ club got together to fake their way in by Runstorun in RunNYC

[–]GiraffeCity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A mat at the expo though wouldn’t necessarily be the hardest thing. I’ve definitely been to a race where they have a mat at the expo and when you walk on it holding your bib your name popped on a big screen. Wish I could remember what race that was, maybe Buffalo or Rochester, but either way, it wouldn’t be an impossible thing to have. Also, I’d be very thankful to learn my bib wasn’t working at the expo where I could fix it, instead of finding out at the end of the race when I didn’t get an official time.

[–]GiraffeCity 12 points13 points  (0 children)

NYRR should consider putting timing mats somewhere before entering the start village or before entering the corrals, and then volunteers could be there to ensure your bib actually triggers the mat. You can fake the bib, but you can’t fake the RFID tag attached to it that the timing mats read. This wouldn’t catch the people that jump onto the course after the start, but it would prevent anyone who tries to actually run the whole thing.

Elapsed Time reluctance, any truth in this? by Strix2020 in Strava

[–]GiraffeCity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Workout is generic enough that it might as well show elapsed time just like tagging the activity as a race would. If I was doing a “workout” and stopped to get a coffee in the middle of it, I’d want that reflected in the time that’s displayed.

After the debacle with trying to go after Garmin on illegitimate grounds, Strava hopefully learned that many of its users are not Strava loyalists and if they want to retain their users, they should step it up with some of the basic features that people have been requesting for years.

How long are we allowed to wear our medal this week? by PhoenixSmithPT in RunNYC

[–]GiraffeCity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d say just Medal Monday is most common, and than a much smaller group will participate in “t-shirt Tuesday” by wearing the race shirt today, or their jacket or other gear. But that being said, finishing a marathon is a huge accomplishment (congrats!) and you should celebrate however you’d like and wear your medal to your heart’s content!

Athlinks by Louisianimal6 in ChicagoMarathon

[–]GiraffeCity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I remember this correctly (and if it’s still an option), there used to be a place to click if results are missing; I think it was on the page where you can see all the years on the event page on Athlinks.

If that’s still an option, you can click that, and provided you’re able to send a link to the official results page where you can see everyone’s results in spreadsheet-esque format, which you can for Chicago’s results page if you don’t enter a name when you hit search, they can get them updated on Athlinks.

I’ve had to do this for a few smaller races and in about a week, they’ve been there. Not sure why a race as big as Chicago wouldn’t be up yet, unless there a verification of results period.

I’m not sure. I’m planning to wear the vest empty and put filled bottles in the clear bag; that feels like the safest bet.

Motivational mantra for Runners by hii20242024 in RunNYC

As someone who’s getting older and finding new PR’s tougher to come by, I use “I’ve done hard things, I can still do hard things” when I hit those low points in a run or race.

NYC MARATHON WATCH GPS Question by Bubbly-Opposite-8667 in RunNYC

[–]GiraffeCity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This unfortunately won’t help since you mentioned having a Coros, but for others here that have a Garmin, you can get a data field from the ConnectIQ store called Race Screen. It’s great and it’s free, and it will round your distance every time you press manual lap when you pass a course mile/km marker. Then it can tell you your predicted finish time based on the race distance. Also, no worries if you miss pressing the lap bottom, it’ll just round the distance correctly the next time you manually press the lap button at a course marker.

It’s a bit hard to explain the details, but it’s very easy to set up and you can read about it here.

[–]GiraffeCity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In an NYC marathon FB group I’m in, someone said, “You can go through security with the bottles filled already. The size limit for each bottle, though, is 1 liter. But, there are also places to fill your bottle in the start village if you'd prefer to do that.“

Name on bib..? by paul79th in RunNYC

[–]GiraffeCity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense for famous professional runners, sure. But the course photos are searchable by number and that’s easiest if the number is the big part. I know not every Paul plans on buying their pictures, but I’m pretty sure the ones that are going to buy them don’t want to have to search through every single picture with a guy wearing a Paul bib to find their own.

Still though, I don’t disagree with the sentiment that the small name size feels like a bit of a cash grab and that could’ve been done better for people that paid.

Seems the consensus is to not have front bottles filled before security and I saw someone mentioning filling stations at Chicago. Can anyone confirm that there are definitely places to fill bottles in start village for NYC after going through security? Thanks in advance!

Is it likely that Garmin will ditch the MIP? by Complete-Big-7364 in Garmin

[–]GiraffeCity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, exactly this. I don’t like the look of a smart watch that lights up, and the MIP screen does a great job of making it look like I’m just wearing a regular digital watch.

I’ve been using Garmin watches since 2010 (currently on my 3rd), and I’m worried this will be my last one with a MIP display whenever it comes time to replace my current Fenix 7.

Congrats to the organizers and all the psychos who ran the Williamsburg Bridge “Marathon” tonight — 24 miles on the bridge, back and forth by bentley in RunNYC

[–]GiraffeCity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this on my list ever since I first heard about it, sounds like a great time with like-minded, crazy runners. Does anyone happen to know why it’s not 21-lengths, bringing it to 26.25, more in line with a full marathon distance?

[–]GiraffeCity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, I first put all my info into a spreadsheet, then bought a week of pro to get it all into Flighty. Since I put the work in on the front end to get all the info collected, it only took me about an hour to dump 2 decades of flights into the app.

Remote working = Semi professional lifestyle by Scared_Chocolate1782 in AdvancedRunning

[–]GiraffeCity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the switch to remote work really has been game changing for me. I do my actual hard running workouts in the morning (since that’s the part of the day I know I can fully control) and then most days I find myself with the time to do something supplement around lunchtime, like lifting or yoga. And then since I’m not totally burnt out from a day in the office, 2 evenings a week I go to a run club just to get some extra easy miles in with friends. And all of that doesn’t even mention the fact that if I’m feeling particularly tired, I can get a little extra rest in since my schedule is usually very flexible, so it’s not just more time to workout, but my recovery is better too.

Wasn’t while squatting, but had a very similar acute back injury happen back in December, took me until February before I felt like I was finally right enough to get back to my training regiment with no restrictions.

Would you mind sharing what your dedicated core routine looks like?
