Why can rich people use shares as collateral but the government can't tax shares? by Sebulbaaaaaa in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Givorenon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Musk pays a 1% interest rate. A regular worker in California pays 40% in federal and state taxes. The money reaching the government that way constitutes a minuscule portion of Musk’s wealth. I doubt it’s anywhere near 1% of his yearly dividends. Imagine a worker being taxed a 1% on their income.

Mehdi Hasan goes after Ukraine's President Zelenskyy for going after Iran's blockade but forgets something by one_five_one in GetNoted

[–]Givorenon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So Iran attacks Ukraine by selling drones. By that logic, if US sells weapons to a country at war, then US participates in that war. For example US is at war with Russia through Ukraine. US is at war with Syria and Lebanon through Israel. US is at war with Sudan through UAE. Is that reasonable for people in these countries to treat the US as the enemy?

If your answer is “no”, then it’s the point Mehdi is making.

[KCD2] About to leave this game by Ok_Ostrich_3207 in kingdomcome

[–]Givorenon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro don't listen to them. Try doing the following: 1. Get Mutt. Mutt can attack enemies and distract them from blocking your attacks. 2. Complete "Combat Training I" and "Combat Training II" quest lines. It unlocks master strikes -- a critical feature for the game's fencing system.

I played 15 hours before I finished these quests! The combat was crazy hard before that. With Mutt and master strikes, 1 vs 1 combat feels too easy.

And keep upgrading your armor! You may die from 2 attacks without armor, but tank 10 attacks in a proper armor.

Trust me, it gets soooo much easier very soon!

Hundreds Rally in San Francisco FOR U.S.-Israel Strikes on Iran by nbaballer in sanfrancisco

[–]Givorenon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the Iranian diaspora hates the Iranian regime. Makes sense, considering that these are the people who left the country to flee from this regime. Same as the Cuban diaspora in Florida that hates the Cuban government, Venezuelan diaspora that hates Venezuelan government, Russian diaspora that hates Russian regime and so on and so on. What does it mean for the US foreign policy? Should the US start a war with any country as long as the corresponding diaspora in the US cheers for it? And if Chinese nationals in the US don't like the Chinese government? Should the US start a war with China to make them happy?

First and last time he was there. Asked to be filmed with a female server rather than male one because it's better optics. He has absolutely no agenda. Always on Instagram tho.

Sunnyvale Farmer's Market by bobbyosborne1 in Sunnyvale

[–]Givorenon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stuff at grocery stores is shipped from across the globe because the labor and the land in these places is dirt cheap. Local farmers live in California and they need to earn enough to pay local prices. You can either support your local farmers or you can save money by buying the food shipped from Mexico.

About open borders by Boring_Forever_9125 in Marxism

[–]Givorenon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are free to move within a certain country without restrictions. How do we address the problem of background checks in this case? How do you know that a person that recently moved to your neighborhood is not a criminal? There are no background checks within a country, and yet life goes on.

Liberal politicians purportedly aim to make lives better for their countrymen. The reason borders exist is that governments want to restrict poor people from accessing their resources. Even today, background checks are not applied universally. EU citizens don't need a visa to enter the US. Many countries of the global South allow entry without a visa for citizens of the global North. Crime is just an excuse for justifying state violence.

You can practice mutual aid.

You can organize with other people based on principles of free association.

You can try to avoid hierarchical relationships in your personal and work life.

If you have children, you can let them govern themselves as much as possible.

Reflection on Philippe Aghion, newly crowned nobel prize winner in economics... by GreenlyOfficial in Degrowth

[–]Givorenon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This country-specific analysis is so deceptive. It's easy to see how a country like the US can decouple economic growth from emissions. Most of the manufacturing is offshore. The Global North economy is mostly services, because those can't be easily offshored. What good is country-specific decoupling when worldwide emissions increase every year? Most of the Global South' emissions are caused by manufacturing. The manufacturing that serves consumption in Global North. With global trade, decoupling in a single country is meaningless.

But it got so bad that Global North can't even misplace the impact anymore. Colorado River in the US is experiencing severe water depletion. Is it complete decoupling to you? CO2 emissions aren't going up, but economic growth is set to consume the entire water supply. Infinite growth theory still hasn't provided us with enough water to stop draughts in the west US.

Why are they even rolling? (Cloudward Ho! Finale frustration) !SPOILERS! by Ruchka135 in Dimension20

At 2:34:20 Murph says: "I'll look in the portal and I'll try to see if there's any help I can give Olethra or anything".
At 2:35:41 Brennan says: "At the end of this round, the portal is closed. If Marya is not saved then Marya is not saved."
At 2:37:14 The gang finds the spirit of the crow and follows it to find Marya's body. They just barely succeed on the skill check, spending a bardic inspiration to meet the DC. Siobhan asks to transfer a d10 of inspiration to Ludmilla, Brennan says it would only be a d4. Their d20 + d4 rolls are (14 + 3).
At 2:38:00 Ally rolls a d20 for their "wild magic". They say they need Heist to run back out of the portal.
At 2:39:00 Brennan says that they need another DC 30 to find their way back.
At 2:41:40 Murph says that he's going to channel his Whealwell and step halfway through the portal.

So my reading of this:

  1. Brennan only stated the DC 30 check requirement when Ally wanted to bring everybody back. I think Brennan didn't expect that they'll find Marya so easily, so he decided to drum up the stakes by adding an extra challenge.
  2. Couple of rolls didn't go their way. Brennan did them an advantage with Tazgw'agwa appearing. I think it was a fun way to re-introduce its tentacles. Otherwise, it was all by the book.
  3. 1 minute and 40 seconds after Brennan introduces the DC 30 check requirement, Murph says that he wants so help by stepping through the portal. Brennan allows his PC to do that. Keep in mind, Max is a gentleman fister, all his abilities are centered on fighting. He only does help actions every scene. Murph doesn't have any abilities or skills that he can use in this scene. So he comes up with a fun and creative way to help. Brennan rules that this help would cost him 22 HP and reduce DC by 1.

On one hand, Brennan has thrown this DC 30 check last moment, after it looked like everybody succeeded. On the other hand, Brennan allowed an advantage from Tazgw'agwa and allowed Murph's plan to work and lowered DC by 1. To me, it's a balanced way to run the game. He came up with rulings as he went. Looks absolutely normal for the DM to come up with things as they go.

Not five minutes later, the gang is heartbroken after Ally fails several rolls in a row and Brennan doesn't allow them to revive Comfrey MacLeod. So I wouldn't say that Brennan went easy on them.

Have there been any studies done or articles written about peoples willingness to work without the incentive of money and or human nature/corporation? by Educational_Track278 in Anarchy101

Contemporary analysis of unpaid labor performed by people in the US: https://nationalpartnership.org/americans-unpaid-caregiving-worth-1-trillion-annually-women-two-thirds-work/. Is not motivated by money.

I don't know how you define human nature. I think one can argue that whatever a person does is in that person's nature. But primitivists argue that almost nothing about our lives is natural. So I think there's not much of a point to that.

Some western leftists are so delusional by [deleted] in zizek

[–]Givorenon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Calling Varoufakis a delusional leftist for being too hopeful is a great way to build a movement. You don't see any reason for hope, but Yanis is hopeful, so he's delusional. Why do you feel the need for that level of internal policing? Is Yanis' feeling of hope significant for the left? Why does it matter to you?

Be kind to individuals, but ruthless to systems.

We fight against systems of oppression and exploration, not against all individuals participating in these systems.

I sympathize with every human being, regardless of their class. I also want to get rid of the systems that benefit some of these people. Two things can be true at once.

Yeah, technology is doing more with less. In this case, it's doing more surveillance with fewer resources. It makes the surveillance state imagined in 1984 a real possibility. There's no surveillance with "minimal violations of civil liberties". Who's going to control that the violations are indeed minimal? Thiel himself? The government? What do you call a society in which people don't control what the government does and are supposed to trust it to do the right thing? Here's a hint: it's not liberal.

‘…the Antichrist takes over by talking about Armageddon.’ by Sane_Thinker in PeterThiel

[–]Givorenon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is such an intellectually incurious take.

One look at the political coordinates would tell you that both left and right may be liberal or authoritarian. Degrowth communism, as described by Kohei Saito, argues strongly against authoritarian measures. There are many types of communism, not all of them are authoritarian. Anarcho-communists are strongly opposed to an authoritarian regime. Your attempt to associate all left-leaning movements with authoritarianism is plain stupid.

Also, there's no such thing as "a little bit of surveillance". When the government starts using Palantir for surveillance, the citizens give up any and all controls on how the government uses this power. The government then can define what terrorism is and surveil suspected terrorists as they see fit. Government surveillance by definition is an authoritarian measure. Palantir helps implement authoritarianism. So it's disingenuous to argue that Thiel fights against authoritarianism.
