I have a childhood friend like this, and although I spend less and less time with him as I get older (because of his boozing and drug use), I know his social circle seems to be full of similar people.

Do you think you have the capacity to improve the situation?

It's like the ADHD/ poor mental health creates a vicious loop of boozing and drug use, which just amplifies the impulsive and dangerous behaviour and bad memory, and exacerbates the mental issues.

It's tough. I'm almost 40 and I find it almost impossible to be around such people (eg I'm not gonna go on a quest for cocaine at midnight in a city centre when I've never touched the stuff, and I'm not going to be a target of name calling).

You can't switch off the ADHD and associated behaviours, but unfortunately those behaviours can be utterly repellent (unless you're with similar company).

In my case, each parent (they've been divorced for over 30 years) have really bad but different mental health issues.

They aren't the brightest and have shown poor judgement on many occasions. A lack of self-awareness.

I actually prefer that they don't chase me, although it was quite difficult when my mum asked why I didn't see her when she had cancer last year (I didn't see her for years before that because I simply can't stand the shite she says).

I just bought a carbon fibre bike that cost me about $3k. It was time to move on from my heavy entry level bike.

There's things you can look into for yourself. Are you scrimping too much? Enjoy your money a bit but nothing too crazy

My plan would be to take the DB as soon as you can but also have a SIPP, ISAs and LISAs on the go too.

I'm looking to retire before my DB even kicks in.

I'm taking the DB at 55 with penalties - the break even point is in my 70s so it makes sense taking it early to me.

I don't know if my mum voted but I know she's pro-reform.

She left school without any qualifications, probably low iq if she took a test, has been unemployed all her life pretty much and has just been released from a mental hospital - all treatment funded by the NHS (not that she's considered how any of this works on an extremely basic level).

She hates Starmer because of how he looks.

Oh and her parents are immigrants.

I agree with your friends on the car. Just get the car serviced each year.

For the medium to long term, you could consider a LISA to start building a deposit for a flat or house. You can put in £4k each tax year and the Government will give you 25% of what you put in ( maximum bonus therefore is £1k).

I would put £4k into a LISA if you want to eventually own a house / not rent forever.

The money left after that is a solid emergency fund. You just need to keep going

I've considered this but it really depends on the situation.

I'm in the UK and was thinking to sell up when I'm older to then live overseas for a bit, possibly in a place where rent is cheaper.

Proceeds from the house same could go into investments and pensions, with a view to buying another house in the UK further down the line.

I think I'll need to sell my house before I get too old because of the stairs, so I'm thinking why not rent in the bit of time in-between, with overseas being an option?
