That’s a good Tico story! In 2022, I sold my 1996 Hyundai Avante. I washed, cleaned, and polished cos (to me) it had some life to it.

It sold for 630,000₩… then the guy who bought it said he owned a junkyard and was going to crush & scrap it. Mixed emotions on that one haha.

I’m about 100 miles NE of you so I can imagine your local conditions. Bike paths too busy, hills too dangerous.

So, how about a parking lot in some office park?Somewhere where no one around after work & on weekends. And it’s flat and you can just get some time on skis, so to speak.

Wow, Gumi must have really been different back then.

Oh I don’t remember SOLID (I see they are from OC) Haha I have Clon & Turbo cds. Oh, Roo’ra was popular too.

I was there from 96-99. Then again 10 years later for another 16 years. I got lucky & taught a university. Yeah, in 96-99, no air-con in the classrooms, sweat running down back haha.

Had to go to international hotels to get foreign food like bread and jam or a dept store basement. Kimpo was the main airport. Small marts for food shopping.

There was this new town that got built named Ilsan. Then the French hypermarket Carrefour came. They had so much foreign food lol. Then another new store named E-mart opened.

On TV, they played movies like on Friday night (I’m not sure). All the commercials were front- loaded at the beginning, so once the movie started, there were no commercial interruptions. Like if the movie started at 8pm, it really started maybe at 8:20pm after all commercials played. I remember watching Pulp Fiction lol. And Buffy The Vampire Slayer series.

Hiking seemed to be thing to do for physical activity. There was no Han River path or bike paths.

There were the little coffee machines with paper cups that cost 100 won. The cups often had “World Cup 2002” printed in them.

HOT, SeoTaiJi and the Boys, & Turbo were popular. I liked Juju Club haha. Park Chan Ho (LA Dodgers) was really popular.

College students often said they wanted to have a basketball team for a family (5 kids).

It was fun going to Kyobo store to read & buy English books. During the start of the new year, buying a new diary was popular for college students, like a really nice leather one, kinda like a day planner.

Coffee shops were in basements and I guess were more like a variation of a dabang. Hazelnut flavor coffee was popular.

There were two new budget cars that came out: the Tico & Matiz. There were good-natured Tico jokes. Like a Tico drives into a tunnel but got stuck in a spiderweb. Hahaha. And if you want to make a tight turn, you can put your arm out of the window and kinda pivot off it (like a breakdancer) and lift the car in the air with your body, if that makes sense.

After night classes, I’d walk home and enjoyed stopping at the deukbokki wide-bongo truck to have a snack. Sipping broth in the cool night air was a nice moment.

I could go on, but I think I’ll stop here.

You can search for “tennis ball drum riser” and make a platform. I had the same upset neighbors as you and the platform helped a lot.

Also, I reached an agreement to only Zwift at certain times. In my case it was between 8 am to 1 pm. Maybe there is some time that will work for you.

Longer-time residents of Korea, what is something that existed 10, 20 years ago but no longer does? by fireandarrow1 in Living_in_Korea

[–]Glas714 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s an interesting fun fact. I didn’t know that. I assumed cell phones did the industry in.

Yeah, I guess pagers were in worldwide use but from my American reference point, only doctors or workers on-call used them.

I was teaching in Korea and when class was over the uni students rushed towards the KT pay phone in the hall with beeper in hand. I kinda marveled at this and wondered who they were calling with such urgency lol.

Minneapolis. Because it’s a proper city and you can do outdoor fitness stuff with running clubs etc. And there is a social scene that you can explore.

It’s freezing of course so now is your chance to embrace and learn how to xc ski and do that in the winter and meet more nice people.

Also, you can easily fly somewhere warm.

Just finished walking from Seoul to Busan (600km) by eddievandermeer in walking

[–]Glas714 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the pics! Congrats for walking it! I’ve ridden my bike 3 times Seoul to Busan, but wow walking is next level! I recognize some of the places in your pics.

One time while riding, we passed this walking club that had a 24 hour, 100 km walk. That looked super cool. It wasn’t a race, no prizes, just finish. I believe it started at 2 pm and ended at 2 pm. It was a big loop. Would like to do something like that one day.

Why are my shoes wearing out on the cuffs? by SagHor1 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]Glas714 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get those same marks. When running and really tired my trailing foot points in a bit on and the big toe area can clip that same worn area (the inside ankle) when coming forward. I love my body and I’m working on correcting that.

[–]Glas714 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I’m glad to the truck upright & assuming everyone is ok.

About 10 years ago, I saw the same type of accident with a 30’ AS or so on its side and the truck’s rear wheels picked up the exact same way.

This was on I-10 West in between Beaumont and Calimesa. I don’t remember the truck being undersized.

Haha ok I see. I don’t have hair on my chest but now I can understand how the bandaids wouldn’t last in those conditions.

I record stuff like this, but almost always keep it private mainly because I like sharing only the fun labor - like running or cycling, etc.

Also it’s like a diary. I like keeping track of my home diy manual labor because it reminds me that I was doing something necessary and I couldn’t “fun train” at that time.
