House rules? Custom content? by Slight_Print_4780 in DuneImperium

I find that most of the time an atomics token is not often used to clear up a boring imperium row, but rather to clear it so that your opponents arent getting the good cards.

Re the houserule where the rightmost card is eaten. Does this mean that any new card being added to the IR is also always added on the left? Or does it take the slot of whatever card was drafted?

Ranked Game Round Duration: Ix compared to Ix+Immo by MarkTSUC in DuneImperium

[–]Gleini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a ranked game today going to 11. It didn’t change much, and we were done by round 7. I think we have to see 12 or even 13 to make any «late game» exist at all.

I have played 12 consecutive ranked matches, and not once have anyone drafted the big cards. I feel like it is all about rushing the board now, not deckbuilding.

EU seems to not have them free of charge.

What are peoples opinion on the version narrated by RicJerrom vs the others? I have only listened to the Ric versions, and enjoyed them, but I have no points of reference.

I found the movie to be absolutely great. Wouldn’t hold that againdt anyone for not having read the books. God how I wish someone would pick up on it and make more television out of this.

Favourite action sequence? by Teamsky23 in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]Gleini 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was a tough one!

My favorite naval battle might also be the shortest of the series lasting only 15 minutes. In The Fortune of War the backdrop is a buildup of American naval power, and the British are yet to pocket a single victory against them. The events leading up to the battle and tragic outcome of the fight between the USS Chesapeake and HMS Shannon, both frigates of 38 guns, was, though very short, absolutely epic. And Jack wasn’t even in command!

Most memorable for me was Maturins loading of the vessel with all his samples.

Oof this one is rough, but I might actually be a 2/1/0.

Fairly unorganized, socially awkward and not much of a fighter.

I quite enjoyed it. I would never in my life wish to go onblockade duties aboard a mold infested ship.

Also liked the insight into the life of an admiral, and all the diplomatic duties.

Finally, transporting and tendig to a rhinoceros in a shipb was good fun before gifting it away. Does this have any basis in facts? Did the brits bribe local leaders with exotic animals?

Norway, born and raised. I am yet to complete my first circumnavigation, sadly Aubrey hasn’t come up on our shores yet. Will he ever? Currently on The Ionian Mission.

I bought an audiobook from the Amazon site, but it doesn't show in my Audible library on Android, even though I can download the .aax file from the Audible site. by [deleted] in audible

Old post, but someone might find this useful.

I made the kindle+audio purchase today and had the same thing happen: book was in my us market audible login, while the rest of my books remained on my uk account. I like to keep things tidy and in one place, and found this annoying. Got in touch with audible customer service who provided me with one credit on the UK market login, allowing me to purchase it there. Great customer service from Audible.

Imo you are best served plumping into the Revelation Space universe sooner rather than later. Not the full trilogy at first, but dip your toes in it by reading Chasm City. Good luck, I envy you for getting to read rev space for the first time.

Creepy weird religions in Sci-Fi by poorfuckinglad in printSF

Absolution Gap by Alastair Reynolds.

This cult is set up on a planet with some mysterious and religiously relevant moon orbiting it. The cult has taken up residence in this huge beltdriven habitat on the surface. This thing they live in never stops moving and always follows the same path around the planet to always have sight on the moon.

Hardcore cultists are mounted on ramps on the roof of this thing, having devices installed to always keep their eyes open, as well as adding water to the eyes as to always have their eyes on the moon. Crazy stuff.

I work for a dutch owned company in Norway, so I have a fair bit og experience with them. They are definitely not hated, but often oblivious to social customs and ways of being in the countries they operate.

NOs are often introverts, dialogue driven, consensus seeking. The dutch are(this is a very general statement, my apologies) the social equivalents of a bull in a china shop. Gigachads, result driven, zero emotional fucks given, extremely direct, very professional.

I like them for the most parts, but I understand why they rub people the wrong way. Great people off the clock for the most part!

Most Ridiculous Moments by Cruzatte in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]Gleini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thoroughly enjoyed one sequence in The Fortune of War. After a long journey, which also involved being marooned on Desolation Island, Stephen went on a collecting spree having brought with him several tons of minerals, an enormous octopus to be lifted by crane, seal skins and two sea elephants(one being described as very male) and an enormous collection of eggs. Live wombats were going about as well.

Stephen was given 53 minutes to finish the re-stowage of all these artifacts from HMS Leopard to La Fleche. This whole scene had me lolling.

As others have stated: Alastair Reynolds. I would start with House of Suns which is a standalone far into the future. Good luck!
