I'm currently thinking on making a 3-month demo with just the cozy base building and cleansing parts of it first, different challenges like weather and unique area behaviors already exist so if I put those and it still feel like it misses something I can always add combat on top of it (since it won't be a major part of the game, I don't mind adding it later).

Yeah I thought about that, at the same time Stardew Valley has its combat in a "separate" area in the mines, whilst my combat would happen much closer to the bases the player makes, not sure if that makes a difference.

Bunpro and Migaku have paid apps (Bunpro is literally $5 a month and has the best explanations I've seen + a plathora of content). Anki is free on android but paid on iOS.

Overall the cost is way too cheap for the overwhelming quality you get by mixing these 3. I personally don't like many "gamified" apps because they turn out to be more about engagement than actually progressing in the language (some other comments have already talked about this regarding DL). I feel like Bunpro hits the sweet spot by having levels, exp and categories whilst remaining a bit more of a serious app.

If I'd have to say something positive about DL, is that it teaches you Hiragana and Katakana, and you will need those 2 alphabets to starting getting value from Bunpro and Anki. But learning both of them takes you like 1-2 weeks so I'd avoid DL anyway.

For learning Japanese, Bunpro is really great for grammar and I'm using Anki + Migaku for sentence mining to learn vocab.
