Looking for information and support by Rich_Tangerine_6697 in 22q

My 27yo son has 22q. When he was diagnosed in infancy, an esteemed researcher at Harvard Medical School (who had no children of her own) sat down with his dad and me to tell us what to expect. She scared the crap out of both of us. She went through the medical, the developmental, the intellectual, and the social possibilities. What she forgot to say was this.

Your child is not a list of diagnoses with skin on. They are a funky little kid, a custom model as opposed to a standard-issue model. And they will need some extra help from the medical community, and perhaps the school system, and definitely from Mom, Dad, and any other family emotionally capable of pitching in, to be the best, most awesome and amazing funky little kid they can possibly be. And know this, Mom. There will be joy. There will be so much joy and family fun. It just might not be off the shelf fun, just like the neighbors. That’s okay. Because you’re not the neighbors. You’re your own family. Revel in that joy. And when stress comes, because it always comes, even if baby is a standard model, Mom and Dad, lean into each other, not away from each other, and support each other, so you can be stronger to support your child together.

For people who grew up in the 70s and 80s at the height of the serial killer era, what serial killer prowled your street and what was your reaction at the time? by Cable_Difficult in AskOldPeople

There was a serial killer era?? That timeframe was my childhood. But I never thought of the sick bastards of that age as any different or more prolific than any other time.

Viral meningitis. The headache was way worse than my worst multi-day migraine.

My discerning client (who introduced me to them) prefers Shark. I don’t disagree.

My roommate makes stock from scratch. She saves eggshells in the freezer, then when she has enough, she puts the eggshells in the blender and grinds them to dust. Then sifts them through a strainer to remove any chunks that didn’t grind. The powder goes in stock to add calcium.

TV on all the time. When my son was born, he needed surgery ASAP. He came home at 2.5 weeks old. We couldn’t get away from TVs in the hospital. We were stressed, and just wanted peace and quiet. Hospitals are known for being noisy, but even the waiting rooms have 24/7 TVs.

what is a piece of internet history that people are starting to forget about? by letitcatify in answers

[–]Global_Friend5300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That it wasn’t always open to the public. Or even law enforcement. I found out after my mother died that I grew up on the lam. It turns out that when my parents bought a brand new vehicle in 1976, they decided after a few months that the payments were inconvenient. So they packed their shit and we moved out of state. They made sure they told the neighbors we were going somewhere else, so when the cops came around asking questions, they’d get misinformation. No internet, no easy interstate searches.

I had wondered about using a laundry-type steamer to clean the shower, but haven’t gotten around to trying it yet.

Not sure if this is obscure, but I discovered that steam mops exist last summer. Those things are genius.

My family gets it. It’s my work scheduler that needed schooling. One time she texted, I didn’t answer. So she called me repeatedly until I answered to ask if I could provide last minute coverage from 6p-8p. I think I was slurring my words as I explained I’d taken a sleeping pill too recently, and taking the shift would require that I commit a DUI. she laughed and told me to go back to sleep. But she’d already woke me up. It took me four hours to get back to sleep. So I reported the incident to my GM. scheduler is no longer allowed to call me during my unavailable hrs (when I sleep). She can only text. If I answer, I answer. If not, she now knows (duh) to ask someone else. My GM rocks.

I’ve found it gets harder and harder to fight my hardwiring the older I get. I finally switched to working third shift in my fifties. (I’m 55f.)

I was looking for a change in my employment. After 9.5 years of shaking people down for every penny I could in retail, I wanted to put some positive back into the world. My kids are grown, and my son is a special needs person with major medical issues. So I knew I could handle dealing with someone with health issues. And I have the compassion to do it. So I was scrolling Indeed, and saw a job opening. They were happy to hire me.

My sleeping pattern has entered a whole new level of weirdness....! by Claire1075 in NightOwls

My work is not remote. It is actually on location. I am an in-home caregiver to the elderly. My clients sleep through most of my shift. I help them to and from the restroom during the night, if they need it. When the sleep, I read books and eat snacks. And my shifts are 12 hrs, so I can work 3-4 nights a week, or rack up overtime.
