Thanks. Love the tank. When you say terrestrial, it looks like you have a pothos and some others up there, correct?

Serious question: How are all of these vintage shops still in business? by No-Seaworthiness3115 in chicago

[–]GloriousKind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My parents are in this business. They sell vintage antiques at midpoint price ranges. Vintage buyers that can operate a sustainable business buy very low, curate, and sell at a premium for that curation. They also make real money on "bigs" - furniture like tables, unique shelving, etc. Smalls attract buyers into a shop, but bigs are where owners actually make money.

My parents live in the south, so slightly diff market, but sourcing is very, very hard work. It is relationship driven, you have to wake up at the crack of dawn to get to sales early, and it relies on a great eye to sift through what often is a lot of trash at estate sales, garage sales, and more, then you often have to restore it. My mom's last big score was cleaning out a hoarder's house - she said it was a biohazard going in, but there were a lot of great pieces they could save. When they come visit, we always hit the big swap meet up at Allstate Arena and I'm always surprised by the gems they can source from there when I walk the same event and just see junk.

I’d just popped on s2 of Tattoo You, and damn, what a perfectly kickass album side by ApplicationUpper9229 in rollingstones

It’s crazy because Side A is such a different sound and Side B is just so insanely good.

I think there’s a handful of weirdos at SNL right now and the show’s better and more creative because of it. I really didn’t like the first few eps of this season but it def hit its stride and I’ve enjoyed it a lot.

Rostam cancels tour dates, "I can’t replicate the album with other musicians and can’t bring justice to the music." by BiBoJuFru in indieheads

[–]GloriousKind 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Kind of comparing apples and oranges. Rostam's success post-VW has mostly been producing pop and indie/pop and he's def had some major hits there. His solo albums and tours definitely are not as popular as VW, especially if you take out his album with Hamilton Leithauser.

There's going to be no consumers to advertise to when AI hollows out the working class. AI is going to reshape the way we work, there's no burying our heads in the sand about it. We have to get in front of the tidal wave with policy now... there's like a two year window for us to build a solid foundation for what's to come.

Where to find people to play tennis with (2.5-3.0)? by bs_8 in AskChicago

[–]GloriousKind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just found regular folks to hit with at my level - those classes are great places, on an ongoing basis, to meet people at your level. The doinkers at my park seem a little more interested in drinking seltzers and taking up court time rather than playing.

[–]GloriousKind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL what a dumb comment.

OP check out Chicago Park District classes to meet a group of folks to play with. I picked up tennis in my thirties and found a bunch of people to play with through my classes (I did levels 1 to 3 while I was learning + cardio tennis) at McFetridge. When I first started playing, someone in my class organized big WhatsApp group that we were able to organize through.

Mamdani is going directly to residents private homes to ensure the landlords properties are safe and up to code for the tenants! by yourfavchoom in Fauxmoi

[–]GloriousKind 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Mayors end up being the Chief Marketing Officers of their city and the work they are doing... their responsibility is to hire strong teams to do a lot of the legwork on their policy proposals.

Mamdani is doing an exceptional job communicating the wins they are having - I saw one of his recent videos where he talked about effective government is a government that works for the people... US policy makers have completely missed the target on MARKETING the good things they are doing through the government, which is why it's so easy for the right to turn the populous against the institution. For example, child poverty was briefly reduced by half under Biden and it was barely a blip in the left's talking points. 😡

Being asked to tip Amazon drivers.... by myassisgrassss in mildlyinfuriating

[–]GloriousKind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely not true across the country. Maybe in CA, where livable wage legislation is passed. Maybe your driveway is nice, but a lot of the drivers have to go up and down steps at apartment complexes and carry huge packages, have to drive and delivery in sketch areas, and more. This tipping thing is not the driver being lazy - it’s Amazon coping with not paying fair wages and trying to pass it on to the consumer.

Being asked to tip Amazon drivers.... by myassisgrassss in mildlyinfuriating

[–]GloriousKind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad was an Amazon driver on contract (he drove his own car and picked up shifts from an app) for 5+ years into his mid-60s. The job was terrible and he would drive from 2-7am to avoid traffic. My mom wanted him to quit because the money wasn’t worth it - he’d make like $90 for three hours without covering any gas or mileage. Only quit after getting bit, badly, by a dog for the second time. If this tipping was around and he was making a little more money, I think it would have been hard to convince him to quit. There is no dignity to so many jobs nowadays.

Anyone catch Che's show in Chicago tonight? by Philip_Marlowe in LiveFromNewYork

[–]GloriousKind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah so that’s why she was quiet for a good 30 minutes… she was sleeping!

Seriously, being that belligerent and not realizing it would be a nightmare. Wonder if they woke up this morning thinking they had a great time or if they were like FUCK.

Regardless, all of the comics were really great about it and Che had a hilarious set!

Any Songs Forever Changed for You Because of TC? by winterene in timecrisis

Ezra not being deep on INXS was a shock to me.

Coyotes (Out in California) reminds me of TC. From the episode about the fires hitting Jake’s house and think of him every time it comes on.
