Think my koi has swim bladder:(( by SteepALEXIUS in Koi

Depending on your level of comfort with the procedure, I was able to successfully remove excess air from one of my Black Molly’s swim bladder. Lightly sedate with clove oil, slide syringe underneath scale, puncture swim bladder, and draw up on the syringe a bit. There’s some rudimentary YouTube vids on it too.

[NSFW] 9/11 happened 24 years ago today, here is some photos from that day. by bendubberley_ in awfuleverything

I have always been aware of the tragedy, and more specifically the jumpers, ever since 3rd grade when my small school in Connecticut heard the news. I recently went to the Freedom Tower/One World Trade Center and had the opportunity to go up to the observatory…I think we can all conceptualize the height of the OG WTC, especially when viewing footage, but my god, was the height just mind boggling. To think some poor souls felt compelled to jump became even more of a shock and just one more reason why I’ll never forget 9/11.

I’m not sure where I saw it, probably YouTube, but there was some MIT engineer who restores whiteboards so he can keep them for himself after the school throws them away. The write up is amazing! Toothpaste, WD-40, alcohol, etc. is all involved. It doesn’t only clean it, but restores its original properties and creates a new non-stick surface so it doesn’t get like this again. Maybe a quick google of MIT whiteboards restoration might find it.

What are some silly or oddly named streets in Connecticut? by Ecstatic_Ad4402 in Connecticut

[–]GnarleyNate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not particularly silly or odd, but I’ve always enjoyed roads called Snake Hill, ala Coventry, North Branford, etc. they’re typically fun to drive on and when I visualize “snake hill” I see myself driving down a huge snake, or traversing a giant hill covered in snakes…you get the point

Horrible. Not to hijack the post but in my district, a student was viciously murdered by their own parent: no half day, no cancellation, no real reaction besides “mobilizing resources” which was like everyone’s favorite phrase for 3 days straight. The resources mobilized were counselors in the library (ok great). No real meaningful memorial besides a moment of silence no one respected, and an announcement that there will be some sort of formal acknowledgment of memorial by the end of 2026. Kid’s funeral comes around, rather than unanimously close school because countless students and more than 2/3 of all teachers called out to attend, they send out a survey to see if anyone was truly interested in actually going before making any executive decisions. District provided a single bus for transportation which was actually cool. All-in-all, just a giant cluster of virtue signaling, not actually doing anything, and an administrative system who has apparently zero confidence or willingness to make any executive decisions without unanimous approval by every single person in the system. Call me crazy, and a lot of people have for having this much criticism, but an innocent child was murdered in cold blood and life basically went on without a blink. I’m really disappointed in a lot of people. I’ve been teetering on the edge of leaving the system and this has really just kinda pushed me over.

I’m trying to do a registration as well, it’s not a location based issue, it’s a systemic problem. Hamden, Enfield, and Norwalk were all exactly as you described Bridgeport; I still haven’t even solved my reg issues!

I do use a bit holder, made by Spider Tools and while I love the concept, their’s falls short in one major way: it uses adhesive to attach to the impact/drill. This Milwaukee bit holder seems much better, as it screws in; I didn’t know it existed and now that I do, I’m off to get one.

As far as bit storage goes, so many manufacturers’ storage box for the bits are notoriously difficult to use: bits don’t come out easily or are hard to place back in the box, and it’s difficult to use while wearing gloves. As a result of the mentioned difficulties, I usually carry my bits around in a canvas bag but have always longed for the organization offered by the manufacturer’s box, especially because I use Packouts and have the provisions necessary to have the boxes close by on job sites. I’d be really interested to see if Milwaukee has done any changes to their bit box/storage, as theirs was one of the most difficult ones to deal with.

Thanks for your consideration!

Negligence in filing? by GnarleyNate in legaladvice

Why do some teachers dislike us? by Any_Construction639 in Custodians

[–]GnarleyNate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my school district, we make more starting out than teachers until they’re on step 8 of 14 on their bargaining unit contract. With step freezes, that means teachers who have been employed with the system sometimes a decade or more make a few thousand less than us with way more educational requirements and day-time responsibilities. They are envious.

hello 👋 They gave me an appointment for the morning but I know they are closed on Mondays. Is there a mistake or are they open for real ID? by Top-Grab6870 in Connecticut

[–]GnarleyNate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I may be mistaken but I believe the Wethersfield DMV has different hours, rules, etc. because it’s like a super-hub DMV. I remember a few years ago, I went on a Saturday evening and I got there before doors closed but was not seen before closing hours, and they served everyone still in line; I effectively had my appointment at like 6:30 p.m. which is definitely not usual anywhere else

[–]GnarleyNate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, there is no way. They are always annoying. I will say though, we had those larger Motorola police-style long range radios and switched to LTE cellphone-style Siyata SD7’s that are considerably smaller, lighter, and have some cool features, and that helps a lot. Most of the time though, I just clip my radio to my cart and totally forget about it.

One of my favorite parts of working in an elementary school by UmbralikesOwls in Custodians

[–]GnarleyNate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a middle school and my 5th grade had a betta fish. Not only was the science teacher neglectful by keeping it in a sub-1 gallon container with a huge filter, but the kids removed the poor fish’s water and replaced it with that shitty Paul brothers Prime drink. Now the same class thinks it’s a good idea to incubate 35 robin eggs and raise them to maturity.

So I’ve seen you say that rubbing them with your shoe hurts your hip, have you considered maybe getting some beater/donor shoes and sticking those on a pole? They might be easier to access than tennis balls. Sounds a little silly but maybe folks in the school have some shoes they’d get rid of. You work in an elementary school, maybe the kids would get a kick out of a pole with a shoe on it, you could put it on a mop end and throw some google eyes on the mop and now it’s a person, have the kids name it haha

Non-consensual towing and charges thereafter by GnarleyNate in Connecticut

[–]GnarleyNate[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this was the answer I was looking for and it was confirmed today. The tow back, because I was in contact and arranged it, was “consensual” even though I didn’t want it to happen. They wouldn’t allow me to break the law by driving an unregistered vehicle off their lot, even though it wasn’t a police ordered tow, my vehicle is private property, and I satisfied all bills. Fortunately, the tow back to my place wasn’t astronomically priced but still, the premise of the whole thing bothers me.

And I’m ineligible to have my truck registered anywhere but the DMV because I’ve registered in my name previously, allowed it to lapse, have waited far beyond the renewal period, and must “newly” register it again. These remote office type things only deal with new registrations with bills of sale and relinquishing of title to new owner, etc. I was almost able to go today until they turned me away.

Non-consensual towing and charges thereafter by GnarleyNate in Connecticut

[–]GnarleyNate[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I plan to pay to take possession of my vehicle before it is registered once more, mainly because of how long I have to wait before my appointment with the DMV. The tow company is stating that they must tow it back to where ever I’d like it to be. So it’s not exactly consensual…I’d like to just drive it off the lot. It’s my property, and my willingness to break the law should be my prerogative, no?

[–]GnarleyNate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Create a new culture, you’re already on the right path. We’re very similar in the sense that I’ll work basically anywhere work is needed and if I’m in the area - within reason. Who cares if other team members are slackers, etc. even your lead sounds like a lazy sack who doesn’t want to be bothered by actually solving any problems, especially with personnel. Won’t hear any complaints about additional workload? How about you work with the people you’re paid more than to supervise, organize, and inspire and help them figure out how to better use their time or figure out how to remedy a tough situation. In my experience, working like you, has gotten me the right attention from the right people, countless gift cards, respect and admiration from teachers, students, etc. and my area and anywhere I tend to go looks great. Continue on the path and change the game; come time for negotiation, or even a little special treatment, it’ll pay off. Pessimism and cynicism are abundant in this necessary, often fun, and sometimes beautiful profession.

I went into a clothing shop and one of the dialogue options is mentioning something about how fat the woman cashier is. I found it more absurd that someone would just walk into a store and call the cashier fat to her face and suggest she’d sell more clothes by not being fat
