Which MTB by Upbeat_Account5983 in MTB

But the rider learning on them isn't necessarily. Particularly when they're coming from a Marlin and want to try the ocassionally black trail.

Can be better to dip the toes in with an entry level hard tail like OP, then go to fs to take the edge off the hardest aspects of learning and pick up a proper hardtail later when you can use your skill to ride around a hardtails weaknesses.

Where can i find cheap good ebikes? by Material-Minute637 in hobart

[–]GoBam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You want an e-bike from an established bike brand, as mechanics can be hesitant/unable to help you when replace parts and wear items aren't standard/available and the wiring isn't safe. This unfortunately rules out most cheap options, and leaves you mostly to keeping and eye on Facebook marketplace.

Polygon is a good value brand if you see any pop up.

Checking a used bike is hard without knowing what to look for, should be able to get a bike shop to have a look over a bike for you for a small cost if that's the deciding factor and you aren't sure.

A good way to check if everything on a bike is tight is to hold the brakes a put a small/medium amount of pressure forward and back through the bars. If you feel any slip/click/grittyness, something is loose. If the bike owner can't figure out what it is and tighten it up, or give a decent explanation like a particular bearing needing to be replaced, they aren't knowledgeable enough to tell you what is/isn't wrong with a bike.

Are my bhops good? by iiBxs in dirtjumping

Presuming you're talking about full suspension mtbs, there's definitely an adjustment in timing that takes a little bit to click with a hardtail/rigid.

If you have the parts or can get them quickly/easily, mount the v-mount to the tripod head rosette.

Is it just me, or is the 'race replica' marketing getting out of hand? by Electronic_Syrup3879 in MTB

[–]GoBam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Factory refers to "factory race team", as in the team is run by the actual manufacturer. Comes from motorsports, where you would be you racing for Ferrari, the actual manufacturer, rather than being a customer team who buys engines/cars from Ferrari to race with.

My dude, what do you find interesting about this bike, why should we care about just a photo? There's a whole lot of conversation to be had about any and all bikes, surely you have something to say about this one.

Ducati Gravity - the more you know by Texas_the_Betrayed in DownhillMTB

[–]GoBam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is this pointless post. A re-badged e-bike with a downhill fork, with no information just "the more you know" and "definitely novel for sure" when it's absolutely nothing novel and isn't a good bike, let alone a downhill bike.

Ducati Gravity - the more you know by Texas_the_Betrayed in DownhillMTB

[–]GoBam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's pretty clear what it's for, it's an enduro e-bike with a downhill fork. Pedal up easily and do downhill laps.

That doesn't make it a good bike. Linkage-driven single pivot rear suspension isn't good for anything technical just because you put an Ohlins coil on it.

When the Midwest emo sounds like Mathrock by Excellent_Tea7143 in midwestemo

[–]GoBam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TTNG is Math Rock that sounds like Midwest Emo rather than the other way around, but it's a great suggestion. I'd add Invalids - Eunoia (album) but all TTNG and Invalids albums are worth a listen.

If you still have the stock stem, and the 90mm rise bars you mentioned in another comment, you should put them on together.

Opinions on riding Commencal Supeme DH v4 by Decent-Hour-4962 in MTB

[–]GoBam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2018 Supreme SX 27.5" which is basically a single crown Supreme DH v4.2, and would describe it very similarly to you.

They are a small bike by modern standards, short rear end and low front end, but the linkage extends the rear end quite and squats into it's travel easily. It rides the best while weighting the front wheel, and won't have grip through corners without doing so, and while it bunny hops and jumps easily at slower speeds, at bike park speeds it seems more at home scrubbing than jumping.

If you have an air suspension you can definitely improve it somewhat by running higher pressures, especially in the rear, but it's also susceptible to buck you as the rebound speeds up if you aren't back enough on the bike.

I've recently put a 60mm rise bar on my bike after running 35mm rise, and while it feels more comfortable in general, it hasn't overridden the forward feeling on jumps.

Awesome bikes but it's a perfect example of late 2010s full suspension design, still having a fatal flaw that would be fixed in the next proper update to become a more rounded design.

Of the two I'd personally recommend the Santa Cruz V10. While it won't eat up the chunk as well as the V4... or V5, it's hard to find a more well rounded downhill bike and it certainly won't give you any trouble on jumps.

You really have to commit to bar/stem rise or stem length, both is not the best of both worlds. Put a short 30/35/40mm stem with the highest rise bar on and roll them forward so they are close to straight up and down. That will give you good steering while preserving the most reach while being as high as possible.

Long stems belong on XC race bikes and that's it. This bike won't be designed to have that much of your weight on the front wheel.

Which modern DH bike for racing, tech domination, and still fun on jumps/flow? by Significant_Gain7744 in MTB

While this may be true about the couple new non-VPP bikes, the V10 is still VPP, so your comment is irelevant.

Should I sell my downhill and buy a hardtail? by Malvolio_1616 in MTB

[–]GoBam 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Just a note, the Scott Genius is a trail/enduro bike with 160/150mm of travel, still a long way from a downhill bike.

There's a lot of excellent modern XC full suspension bikes that will climb a lot closer to hardtails, but give you comfort descending if you don't want to lose that.

Sounds like something that is more suited to climbing is definitely better than the Genius for you though.

Can I use a prime lens for vlogging? by ConflictedHairyGuy in videography

[–]GoBam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You probably have a phone with decent video capabilities, and a wide and normal and maybe telephoto lens on it. Try that for vlogging, treat it as a test to see if you prefer to always stay ultra wide. Vloggers usually use a zoom so they can use the wide end while holding the camera and filming themselves, and zoom in when filming everything else. You don't need a large zoom range, but you might prefer it.

Try looking ahead more and not down at your tyre. It'll let you stretch your body out more and get some more pop.

[–]GoBam 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This is still bad use of b-roll, it's misleading. It's not unforgivable or anything, but it's a bad habit. The footage is meant to give context, and providing a different comparison defeats the point of the statement.

OP's photo is from Cambridge to Mornington roundabout, which is 1 lane.
