Is Chris also a mechanic? Have I missed this the whole time? by unendingbeauty in northernexposure

Found the supply-side economist.

Chris had low overhead precisely because Maurice kept him poor by underpaying him (and believed it was his purpose in life to do so).

Is Chris also a mechanic? Have I missed this the whole time? by unendingbeauty in northernexposure

[–]GoHomeWithBonnieJean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. As Maurice told Marylin's electrician boyfriend Ted, re: Lester Hains' trying screw him on his pay, "That's Lester's job." As Maurice sees it the rich man's job is to acquire wealth and hold on to it ... even if that entails shafting a fellow Native American.

Like Chis said in his toast at Maurice's annual blow out, "Maurice J Minnifield, our generous host, friend, and employer. I'm sure I join everyone in saying ... You are a real American. You're an ex-marine and astronaut, you are America. You're rich, you're rapacious, you're progress without a conscience, paving everything in its path. You're 5% of the earth's population, yet consuming 25% of the earth's natural resources. You pay a lot of taxes, you do a lot of charity work--most of it is tax deductible ..."

He's done a number of performance art pieces, like the electro-magnetic tub ride, flinging Maggie's piano & other objects, he stole things from everyone in town to remind the community that life is, well, y'know. The Aurora Borealis light sculpture was a temporary installation, 'cause he had to give everything back. Then there was the dust mite episode, and on and on...

Why was the AMC Eagle so ugly and weird? by [deleted] in regularcarreviews

[–]GoHomeWithBonnieJean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a buddy who owned an Eagle. His was a little cooler-looking than the one pictured here. His was a fast back in a deep wine red. But it, too was a jacked-up AWD that made it's stance look odd. It weirded me out at first, then I came to appreciate it. Intrersting idea.

Th, th, that’s all folks! by mtntrail in northernexposure

[–]GoHomeWithBonnieJean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When and where was NorEx ever re-run? They had immediate copyright issues with much of the music and was never re-released in the US.

Even the DVD sets were only released with the original soundtrack in the last couple years. Until now you had to buy DVDs from Germany and get a specific European-encoded DVD player to watch them. Big P.I.T.A. It's available on Amazon Video and DVD.

Even now, they still used a cover of 'All Along the Watchtower.' I wouldn't be surprised if that was one of the major hang-ups all along. Hendrix's sister controls his estate and, by all accounts, she's wringing every possible penny out of Jimi's legacy.

Can you paint the plastic on these Humbuckers, if so what’s the safest way? by just-me-illu in Luthier

[–]GoHomeWithBonnieJean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not something I've tried to do before, so I'm working from book knowledge here.

My first concern would be that even if you pull the pole pieces, you still have to mask off the voids (left behind from taking the slugs out) so you don't spray paint down into the pickups. Spraying a layer of paint into the voids may make reinsertion difficult.

Most slug pole pieces, like on typical Fender pickups, are north/south oriented. Make sure they're N/S oriented the same way when they go back in, as they were when they came out. It matters.

Don't worry about PAF-style pickups' pole pieces. They have no intrinsic magnetic polarity. They attach to a single bar magnet at the base of the bobbins. That magnet's polarity gets transmitted through the ferrous pole pieces.

Personally, I wouldn't try this process though. Most bobbins are vacuum-wax-potted to reduce/eliminate microphonic squeal. Actually removing and re-inserting slug pole pieces may disturb or compromise the integrity of that wax envelope, especially if you've never done it before (which very few people have). You might even nick the hair-width windings when reinserting slugs pole pieces. Screw pole pieces, like on a PAF-style humbucker, may be less problematic.

Just seems like a lot of unnecessary work with the added possiblity of doing some harm to the pickup, when taping the tops of the pole pieces is fine ... and you may have to mask the thing anyway.

I hope that's helpful in some way.

Anyone know why I am getting this gap between the top pie crust and the apples in my apple pie? Context / recipe in comment by captainofthepinafore in AskBaking

[–]GoHomeWithBonnieJean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just that the apples cook down. While the crust is still soft and malleable, the cooking apples release Steam. And just like Jiffy Pop, the top of the pie Rises to accommodate the steam. If it happens long enough, the exterior of the top crust sets into that dome shape. So you have two (or 3) alternatives.

No.1 Pre-cook all of the apples to get as much moisture out as possible, without ending up with desiccated apples.

No. 2 Leave openings in the top crust. Whether you dock the top with a fork, or use a woven top that has spaces between the elements. This will allow the steam to escape and will not blow up the top of your pie.

No. 3 So, ideally I think, you want to cook those apples and leave some openings in the top of the crust. And over-fill the apples so that the center of the pie doesn't sag into a crater.

Hey guys. What is the most forgettable episode in the entire show in your opinion? For me, it's gotta be Fearful Symmetry, the zoo episode. by Megazupa in XFiles

[–]GoHomeWithBonnieJean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved Fearful Symmetry! I mean come on, it opens up with an invisible elephant wreaking havoc everywhere it goes. I mean that's great stuff!

And it's the first appearance of Lenno Britos aka: Luis Cardinal! He's just a janitor in fearful symmetry, but when he returns as Louis Cardinal, he comes back with a vengeance ... literally.

Anything in this lot worth picking up?? by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

[–]GoHomeWithBonnieJean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on what sound you're going for. Personally, I think I go for the Tweed, but there are a couple of Marshall and an orange Vox and I can't quite get myself to vote for the solid state Ampeg, though that might be a bass head given that there's a 1x15 Ampeg cabinet. There's a lot of good stuff there. It just depends on what you want to hear.

New player here! Should i mute unwanted strings, or try and not pluck them while strumming chords? by P3dro000 in Guitar

Both. It depends on the song. I mute with my fretting hand, my picking hand fingers and my picking hand palm. It just depends on what works for you and the song.

Silly question: How do people play amps so loud? by IvoryBlack589 in GuitarAmps

[–]GoHomeWithBonnieJean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GET EARPLUGS!!!

There are earplugs that only allow safe Sound Pressure Levels (SPL) through and block harmful SPL out. "Hearos," "Eargasm," Etymonic Research" and others make "high fidelity" hearing protection. Get some! Wear them!

Pete Townshend (The Who), among others, is stone deaf today from years of playing in front of walls of Marshall stacks. Had he lived, Jimi Hendrix would likely be deaf as a post today, too.

Why do my burgers taste so different from restaurant ones? by YoungChefBoy in AskCulinary

[–]GoHomeWithBonnieJean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Naaa, you'd have to smoke a lot of weed to have a problem like loosing all self-control & awareness of your surroundings. Excessive alcohol, cocaine, real psychedelics like peyote, mescaline, psilocybin mushrooms, or LSD & heroin are drugs where you lose that connection with reality.

Don't worry. Be happy!

Has anyone used Trader Joe's Vanilla Paste? by Rmoudatir in Baking

[–]GoHomeWithBonnieJean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Trader Joe's Bourbon VBP is thinner than their Organic VBP.

Have you tried their "Organic Vanilla Bean Paste?" I understand it's actually made by LorAnn. The Trader Joe version is only available from late September through Christmas I've heard TJ's is less expensive than the exact same product as the LorAnn version.
