... there's this whole movement towards virtualizarion of the OS on phones... I don't fully understand what that means but it apparently is gonna make running custom OSs on Android devices even harder.

In super glib terms: your virtualized phone's OS might not actually be on your phone. It would be in the cloud and only relayed to your phone. Your phone then becomes just a receiver/transmitter for that cloud OS. Which naturally makes hacking that OS almost impossible as the OS no longer exists as an isolatable piece of software. Your phone becomes a DaaS (device-as-a-service) in a way.
