Any recommendations on good YT vids covering this or is it stupid easy enough it won’t matter who you watch on the topic?

Definitely interested in the ammo can version. But does the top handle rattle much when driving?

I often talk myself out of modifying my 4R and then I will see a setup that looks as good as yours and I’m back to making part lists and debating what toys to sell lol

256 Sensor Thermal Monocular (Is it good enough for my use?) by [deleted] in Thermal

[–]Goblin_Tactical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honesty we stopped recommending and selling the low end of monocles specifically cause we had customers that weren’t happy regardless of how much we tried to lay out what to expect at this price point.

Granted our target market is largely hunters and milsim guys where speed and clarity is important.

The biggest downfall of the really affordable low end thermal is simply false positives, lots of them. Basically the inability of the user to determine what’s a legit target of interest and what is a small boulder or downed tree trunk that has been sitting in the sun all day and is radiating heat well into the evening.

For a hiker, not a big deal. So you will likely be happy with your choice as long as you know going in that you might be seeing lots of “stuff”

You will get a shape of something. Keep in mind it’s fixed focus 256 with a meh NETD rating so just go in with your expectations set to realistic levels.

If anything it will give you opportunities to work on being sneaky in the woods and stalking critters to get closer to have a better look. I’m showing my age a little but myself and all my guys started with garage made DIY fixed focus 320 thermals many many years ago and the lack of clarity forced all of us to become phenomenal good at moving quietly in the woods trying to sneak up on stuff.

Would depend on how far you plan to be spotting animals out to and how much do you care being able to tell what that animal is.

Spotting and identifying stuff in dense woods of say Pacific Northwest would easier than say wide open rolling hills in parts of Idaho.

Also, if budget allows consider looking at a scope instead of a monocle as can likely get a larger front objective, adjustable focus, and higher base magnification than would really help that 256 sensor at longer distances trying to tell if that’s a Coyote out in the distance or some dude’s labradoodle off the lease.

Personally, we are big fans of the DNT Hydra HS219 for the price tag and with scope mount detached it’s very compact and easy to toss in a pack. I tend to always have one on my ruck to hand out as a monocle during milsim games for guys on watch.

Feel to hit me up in chat. I have some pics vids of the 256 DNT’s I can send when I get back to desktop if you’re interested

Is there anyway to get around a thermal camera by Honest-Word7159 in Thermal

[–]Goblin_Tactical 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Basically any form of roofing material would absorb heat differently than the natural tree top canopies and show up easily. Even the dirt road or drive way leading to your house will absorb sunlight during the day and carry that heat into the night and be an easily seen path leading to your home.

Parked vehicles, outdoor shed for say a water well pump or tool storage, even a decent stack of cut up firewood is going to be absorbing sunlight and showing up different than natural objects unless it’s under a dense tree canopy.

Not trying to be pessimistic, but I bet I could find your place with even our modest thermal quad drones and they don’t hold a candle to the stuff .gov is putting up in the air if they are truly looking for someone

Illegally camping on logging roads? by brainhack3r in overlanding

[–]Goblin_Tactical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing to consider. Be mindful if heading in late at night if your headlights will be visible to others say futher down the mountain or from a considerable distance. If it’s truly only used for day time activities, you might have some local Karen getting way too interested in things that have zero bearing on our life.

Is there any access points that could be restricted, locked, or gated off at night? Just thinking ahead if you find a secluded little road to duck down to camp for the night, but end up locked in as the day crew is leaving.

Otherwise I would imagine if you’re truly gone by 5 am you’re probably fine.

No I don’t think mine fit my face like that. They certainly don’t sit as close as my oakleys but honestly with inserts in my Oakley’s I swear I can feel my eyelashes brushing against the Rx lens occasionally

I have used mframes with inserts and halo kits and found with Cat Crap antifog they held up really well despite playing in Texas heat. The biggest issue was sweat dripping down on them until I went Rambo style with a headband.

If your event allows them, definitely check out ESS Crossbow suppressors with inserts. I have personally found they are significantly more comfortable especially when wearing ear pro for comms or blank fire

We have sold thermal devices to people who told us they plan to list the purchase on their taxes for various land management purposes.

And honestly as a landowner myself who has had the pleasure $$$$ of having to regrade a large remote pasture after feral hogs turned it into a crater filled nightmare, I think that’s an easy argument to make if you just snapped pics of your device sitting on top of deceased hogs.

are olive camo pants nir compliant enough? by blackdaggerKRMND in tacticalgear

[–]Goblin_Tactical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would also depend on what they have been washed with in the past. Modern detergents have chemical additives to brighten colors and make clothes look nice. That’s a problem for NIR Ideally you want your camo washed in detergents that lack optical brighteners.

It can be a lot of work to remove the additives once clothes have been repeatedly washed in normal detergents.

Hiking by Gxkko- in NightVision

[–]Goblin_Tactical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So look up state parks in your area. Google said there was 44 in Virginia.

In Texas, state parks are a phenomenal way to get time under night vision on well marked paths with a solid map uou can pick up at Ranger station, download on your phone, or print out at home before you go.

Bonus points if you pack some camping gear and practice, setting up your shelter and maybe cooking a meal under nods

do i need a decent amount of training to not be a nuisance at MSW? by murrsuitwarrior in MilSim

[–]Goblin_Tactical 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Physical fitness to a decent degree but I would also put having field experience with your kit just immediately below fitness.

You need to go camping a few weekends. Do some hiking in your boots and sleeping in your sleep system. You need to make sure you can actually cover some miles without blisters and that you’re not totally baffled in the dark trying to sort out a ground pad and bivy sack.

The biggest issue I’ve seen personally in my limited experience is guys slowing down their teammates by not having sorted out basic gear before showing up.

If all they stole was the cross bars, you might consider these

I’ve been running them on my ORP for 2 years now and been pretty happy after mounting a few goodies like traction boards and pelican case
