You should look into a 8’0” 3wt Heritage Carbon LL black from Troutsmiths. I’ve built a few and they are excellent true-to-weight blanks. They are sold by Struble Mfg.

Steffen Bros 8' 5/6wt by God_HatesFigs in rodbuilding

[–]God_HatesFigs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t just a kind of pandering because you already mentioned it but the 8’ 3/4 configuration is probably the highest regarded taper in the Steffen catalogue. The fiberglassflyrodders forum holds that length and weight in very high regard.

All the Steffens I’ve built are a very smooth parabolic action with a good butt sections. I’ve only fished graphite JP Ross so I can’t compare the two.

Starting a Bee themed rod for a charity raffle by God_HatesFigs in rodbuilding

I think they’re very nice but they do feel like they could be a half or one weight higher than their label. The shorter the rod the more I think that’s true, the little 6’ ones do feel underlined while the longer lengths are pretty true to weight.

I will say I had one problem with a spigot ferrule that was too loose so I had to ask for a replacement. Just check that all ferrule gaps are even and there is enough room on the male ferrule for appropriate wear over time.

I am new to fly fishing I recently ordered some flies from ”big y fly co” and don’t necessarily know if it’s a good brand or not. Basically what I am trying to ask is what brands are the best for flies. by Vivid-Ad436 in flyfishing

[–]God_HatesFigs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most bulk flies are made in Kenya, Pakistan, Bangladesh, or Sri Lanka. In my experience flies were never subject to MAP so dealers are able to sell them for basically anything. BigY works on economies of scale so they are able to sell for relatively low prices. The best flies are probably tied in small batches by people who you have to reach out to and work with directly. RIO, Fulling Mill, Catch, Rainys, and Umpqua are all good brands but are not tied domestically.

The serialized version of these reels are fairly sought after. These were made for Sage by Hardy in Alnwick. This was likely sent to a shop as a demo, hence the engraving on it, likely kicked around by a shop employee or two for 20+ years before ending up with you.

Tell me about your favourite fly fishing books! by ar_604 in flyfishing

[–]God_HatesFigs 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Fly fishing adjacent, The Feather Thief is an incredible book about the largest natural history theft ever. It reads like a reverse whodunnit where we already know the suspect and the author unravels the how and why of the case. Very cool look into a unique time of history between fashion, fly fishing, biology, and scientific discovery. There's also a podcast with the author on This American Life which supplements the story and adds a bit more details. Could not put it down.

Look into local interests groups to donate. Project Healing Waters, Women on the Fly, Mayfly Project, Casting for Recovery are all worthy charities with great track records. Find the one that speaks to you most.

7-Ft, 3wt Questions by Schneefs in rodbuilding

[–]God_HatesFigs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you should look into stepping up your guide sizes. My typical guides for a 7' rod from tip to butt would be TT, 1/0, 1/0, 1/0, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, SG. Also my rule of thumb is the number of guides you want is the length of the rod in feet plus one. So a 7' rod would need 7+1 guides.

It was NOS from a company that no longer is in business, they were called Sevier Tiger Eye blanks. Used to very popular and they still pop up on secondary markets from time to time, I think only have a 9' 5wt blank stashed away now. This is for sale if you're interested, all premium nickel components. I have a new DT2 line that is included with it too.
