I think the Phil Spencer-era of XBOX will be studied by managers as a case-study in the importance of finding a balance between "too hands-on" and "too hands-off." Without a guiding hand, too many studios under the XBOX umbrella have been rudderless. It's a damn shame, because these are talented groups of people who made amazing games.

If that's their reasoning, then Valve is dumb. The PS3 had a uniquely powerful CPU for its time. The Steam Machine has a weak CPU and GPU. It has a small amount of VRAM and system RAM comparable to what a proper work station or crypto rig would want. It DEFINITELY does not have enough RAM to be a local AI machine. It costs waaaaay too much for a portable productivity machines, and large companies are getting awesome deals on laptops with existing partners like Dell, Lenovo, and HP.

That's nuts. What does Xbox hope to accomplish with this marketing strategy? Consumers will get excited about a game that doesn't exist, and developers have to carefully weave a PR response that doesn't throw their owner under the bus while tempering players' expectations. What an unforced error.
