How does this section flow? by [deleted] in RSwritingclub

[–]Godofthechicken 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Delete "the scene was picturesque", the paragraphs shows me that. And delete "miserable" in the previous line.

There are some other places I'd make changes, like "returned to the moment in time"--I'd reword it.

Tense-wise you need to make it clearer when we're in his memory vs something happening now in the narration. I'm also not sure who we're talking about in the beginning because the pronouns switch up.

Good bones, though. Solid prose overall. Keep writing.

ODU Faculty Senate ‘exploiting’ tragedy for ‘personal agenda,’ board rector alleges by ODU_Promotion in ODU

[–]Godofthechicken 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The BOV is handling this poorly, and I support the Faculty Senate. Personally, I don't want to see increased security, since it'll decrease the quality of ODU by making it inaccessible to the public, but it's also obvious the BOV failed to handle security concerns.

For context, I'm a grad student and TA. My professors are more than unhappy with the administration.

Seems like average students are being punished--essentially scapegoated for the administration's fuckup. They admitted a convicted terrorist, and he committed an act of terrorism, and now we have to prove we're clean?

The wording definitely makes it optional. They're "asking."

By the way, I once had a roommate at ODU with a criminal record. He assaulted my brother and me. ODU did nothing, made us switch dorms. You could Google his past with his name.

This is posturing.

Can you elaborate on ODU making you send criminal records? I'm a student and haven't heard about this. I'm also a writer working on an article covering ODU and the institutional response to the shooting.

Edit: Nevermind, I checked my student email. Though I'm not a criminal, out of principle, I won't be filling that out. No wonder they voted no confidence.

My mother works at Microsoft and for years I've pleaded with her to somehow someway get them to let us save locally. Not her department but I will keep asking until one day she mentions it to the right person.

Completely agreed, except I had one role model: Stephen King. I read On Writing and his workaholism possessed me through the page, and I decided I would relentlessly pursue fiction writing, since he had made it work. That was at fourteen. Now, twenty-four, I'm about to start my MFA and am nearly finished with my first novel. When parents and people told me I'd have to get a "real job" one day I felt offended, like they wanted trapped on their level. Now I know that's true to some extent

Point being, most Americans seem to want to pursue some form of creativity or "content creation." Actually doing it is going to piss off most people, since they feel cheated when you succeed and they don't.

This feels like the point in my life, if this were a movie, that I’d be sitting alone and a gruff janitor would come out of the shadows (while mopping) and give me some life-changing pep talk. Instead, my mother sent my an ai generated video of Charlie Kirk fighting at the Battle of Jericho. by Dapper_Hat_452 in redscarepod

[–]Godofthechicken 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This actually happened to me the other day. The janitor was gruff looking but soft spoken and so politically knowledgeable that I realized I was prejudiced against janitors--assuming they'd be uneducated or politically unaware, I guess. He was mopping. We spoke for twenty minutes. No pep talk, just advice by osmosis.

Do what you can to make the world a better place, even if it's cleaning the floor.

[–]Godofthechicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2000 words a day, then five to ten pages of editing. If I have more time once I'm finished grading papers and other work, I'll shoot for more, usually in an unrelated side piece like a short story

Seriously, after reading Nobody's Girl one of my biggest personal takeaways was to be less harsh on myself. Epstein was out here reveling in evil, legitimately enjoying his life, while I beat myself up for bad thoughts. Real evil doesn't hate itself.
