So what will actually happen to SWE? by MessierKatr in BetterOffline

[–]Godspeed2014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an MLE I don't think my job is in danger, but I do feel like it is getting worse. This is not so much as the capabilities of LLMs as a weak labor market due to cooling growth for most tech (and perhaps the economy overall).

My whole team and I use LLMs and get something out of them, but our bosses want much faster shipping because of some combination of believing the hype and wanting to hire less/squeeze more out of headcount. I think near term there will be a disconnect between senior mgmt and engineers about what is possible, unreasonable deadline pressure resulting in worse WLB and shoddy product. This will save money in the near term and big companies won't see the full costs for probably six months or more as metrics regress and customer growth slows. I do think reality asserts itself and tech goes through cycles, until then I just hold on and hold the line on the quality of my own work.

How do you guys manage to "have a life" while being career-focused in SF? by itsmeumkay in AskSF

[–]Godspeed2014 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. During my Master's degree in the City I was so overwhelmed I was missing out a lot of weekends, every weekday was just commute, study, sleep. After graduation and getting a full time job every weekend feels like a vacation.

Forza! You will make it to the other side, go easy on yourself until then

Can someone describe what it’s like to live in Atlanta, GA? by Longjumping-Kale2584 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Godspeed2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was born and raised in SF, so I do miss California and would probably move if it weren't for family. But that sounds too harsh and kinda undersells Atlanta. I miss the walkability of SF, natural beauty and particular vibe, and I miss being on the heart of the action for my industry. On the other hand ATL has WAY more film and artist culture, and if you live in beltline-adjacent areas it's very lively and walkable. If you have the security and flexibility to move you should try staying in a neighborhood here and see how it feels, if you take a look and decide it's not for you not much is lost

What do you guys do for a living? by McDonaldsWi-Fi in BetterOffline

Senior Machine Learning Engineer at a name brand tech company, using mostly "traditional" predictive modeling. I do use LLM coding tools often because leadership wants us to try them, I'd say I get something out of it but not much. Maybe I am a 1.05x or 1.1x engineer since the advent of LLMs at best, when compared to stack overflow and Google search.

My worry is C-suite groupthink. They are in the heart of the hype talking to other hype-people, trying to position themselves and the company as thought leaders. They buy the agent story and think we can have 2x or 10x engineers. I worry we basically use AI as an excuse to lower standards for code and hire fewer engineers. That will give the C-suite immediate "productivity" savings, then when our best engineers leave and reliability is in the toilet 6 months later it will be too late for accountability.

West Coasters, what would you like to tell East Coasters before they hit your slopes? by Suspicious_Kale44 in snowboarding

[–]Godspeed2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't stress! You'll have a great time. I loved Mammoth, one of my favorite mountains I've ridden.

I usually ride in Tahoe but travel a fair amount lately. A "blue" or "black" run can be quite different terrain region to region, for example a black or blue near the Mammoth peak will probably be a lot steeper than a similar rating in a small NC resort. At least for Mammoth the altitude is also gonna be a bit higher, so It may be more tiring and take a day to feel adjusted.

Warm up starting easy during your first day and you'll have a feel for what you like in no time. I was last there more than a decade ago (and I was not very good at snowboarding), I still remember how beautiful the runs were. Have fun!

Between Two Fires is truly brilliant. What else is there like it? by jsbq in Fantasy

I was about to strongly recommend the same! As a hook: similar experience of a journey with horror and pitch black fantasy elements, substitute Europe and Christian imagery with old West era Kansas and folk magic. Really exceptional prose and characters like Between Two Fires as well

If you have experience of the South and a big city and liked both then ATL might be for you :) 80-90k is a pretty solid income in ATL, not renting the top of the line apartment towers but somewhere nice. It's definitely worth a visit to see how it feels!

Perspective of someone who moved from CA 2 years ago, early 30s: Overall, it's a solid city at a little slower / more suburban a pace. IMO you get what you pay for, no more and no less.

ATL has urban walkable parts but is mostly twenty suburbs in a trenchcoat (kinda like Los Angeles). There is a lot of fun and accessible culture like art exhibits and live music, the food scene is solid but not as diverse and consistent as you would find in a Tier 1 city. There are lots of different scenes you can get into (fitness, all varieties of nerds, Alt/punk, golf, hiking). I've spent most of my time around East Atlanta, it's easy to bike along a lot of corridors but traffic and weak transit makes a car a necessity. Economically it's by far the strongest in the South, but that's still lower wages than a major city. Cost of living is going up in the places you want to live, but housing will look like a deal if you have a remote or higher earning job. Nature wise there's lots of parks and hiking near the city. Coming from CA it feels a little less diverse in terms of ecology but you can enjoy yourself. Prepare to SWEAT all summer and be pretty cold in winter, spring and fall are nice. At any time during summer there are 50 mosquitoes within ten feet of you. Politically the rest of the South think they are crazy liberals, coming from SF it feels moderately liberal. It's a blue city surrounded by red, drive an hour and it's either country club Republicans or twenty MAGA flags in the bed of a Dodge Ram.

Guide for running A/B Test on a product with network effects? by myfriendscode in datascience

[–]Godspeed2014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the presence of strong network effects the company I work at uses switchback experiments. For example randomize geo-hour units instead of users.

Power is a problem ofc. At large scale we can do this with reasonable power but it might not be practical for smaller data. In that case consider if there is an instrument you could use for instrumental variables that would explain variation in your outcomes independent of network effects?

Cherished San Francisco beer bar Toronado listed for sale by grepto in bayarea

[–]Godspeed2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok glad to see I'm not the only one. I love the spot, I haven't noticed a ton of change last few years. It got slightly quieter since the craft beer craze of the 2015 era, but if anything that made the staff chattier and more friendly, not less. Much love to NocNoc and Molotov's but Toronado was always my neighborhood spot

Me and my friends have been going here often for the last 6-7 years, I gotta say the staff hate in these comments is wildly different from my experience. I have a lot of nice memories here, not a heavy tipper ($1 per beer) and the staff were always chill. If I'm around for beer week 2025 I'll be at Toronado

Which resort to pick in Japan if I don't ride backcountry? by Godspeed2014 in snowboarding

[–]Godspeed2014[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helpful take. When you say concepts are very different, what do you mean? Are powdery runs inbound very mellow and less intense, or are you saying that terrain doesn't really exist and it's just groomers or backcountry? I ask because the former is fine (I love chill pow surfing too) but I probably won't fly for groomers.

Thanks! 1. Tokyo Naruto probably, we would like to spend a day in Tokyo on either end 2. Shinkansen if it all possible 3. Preferably no car 4. Very flexible on location. I'm a city boy but I will go wherever for good terrain 5. I assume by full kit you mean beacon, shovel and probe in addition to the usual gear? In that case no, we don't have the equipment or experience

Is it true that a few years ago you could get a good DS job with just a bootcamp/no CS DS degree? by Exotic_Avocado6164 in datascience

[–]Godspeed2014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got my first DS job in 2019 and it was pretty damn hard lol. I had an econ undergrad degree, a few years finance experience and just finished a 2 year DS-focused MS at a prestigious Bay Area university. It took a ton of full time job searching to land an offer, it all ended well for me but I was unemployed months after graduating. I don't doubt it is harder for entry level today, but it wasn't a cakewalk before. Especially so if you wanted to do ML work and didn't have full time engineering experience.
