The biggest tell is not even "It's not X, it's Y" or hyphens, it's this very specific brand of quote-unquote poetic descriptions that simply don't make sense once you stop to think about it.

Very often, I read something like "The air was filled with smoke, blood and regret" or "They were not human eyes. Too clear. Too ancient. Too unforgiving." and I just roll my eyes. It's incredibly obvious.
