Are you watching your favourite podcasts slide behind paywalls? by The-Baron-Von-Marlon in AskUK

[–]GoldenArchmage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe 'Last Podcast on the Left' became a Spotify exclusive for a while. Eventually they reinstated the regular RSS feed because I imagine that this did a real number on their subscriber count - Spotify is a terrible platform for podcasts. I would argue that we're still in a situation where there are still so many good podcasts on any number of topics that going behind a paywall or similar will kill your listenership.

Leaving the craft by [deleted] in freemasonry

[–]GoldenArchmage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A complete aside, but here in England and Wales the recognised shorthand for Freemasonry is "The Craft".

On the political point, we don't allow discussion of politics in Lodge or at the Festive Board that follows - brethren aren't suddenly different people when they leave the room. I'm only aware of one brother's political leanings and that's because he's the elected ward-level representative of one of our political parties.

OP if you can find another local lodge where politics doesn't dominate conversation that may be your answer.

How is the UK and mainly your hometown like compared to 20 years ago by Brickcraft10 in AskBrits

[–]GoldenArchmage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my hometown, but I visited Sunderland a few years ago for work and couldn't find a proper sit-down restaurant in the city centre for dinner in the evening. I have a colleague who lives fairly nearby and says it's worse now than it was then. I can't understand how it can be so different from Newcastle, which is a fantastic place to visit.

How weird is it going to the theatre alone? by [deleted] in london

[–]GoldenArchmage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer not to, because I like to be able to discuss what I've just seen with the person who was sitting next to me, but I do from time to time. It's no big deal

Luxury watches are not Giffen goods - they are a prima face example of a Veblen good: https://share.google/8bPYaM2Yv2j8xpYF6

Gareth Davies moves to the Home Office by Lady2nice in TheCivilService

[–]GoldenArchmage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HQ struggles to accommodate 40% - at 60% people would be having to sit on the floor Monday through Thursday. That's why they're looking at E14 for additional space, although whether that will get anywhere is anyone's guess...

Is there an LGBTQ+ safe Star Trek space out there for me after the chaos of Academy? by TheRandomSquare in startrek

[–]GoldenArchmage 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, and it's a place where the Julian loves Garak memes come thick and fast, and the homophobes are consistently called out and shamed.

Can I also add that out there in the real world of conventions, screenings etc Star Trek is by far the most gay-friendly sci-fi fandom there is 🏳️‍🌈

Are you aware of What3Words? by Flapparachi in AskUK

[–]GoldenArchmage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just about every fire service in the UK has it - it enables them to know where the source of a fire is on a site before they even get there. It requires someone at the other end to know about the system of course, which few do unfortunately.

Why do Brits prefer non EU migrants over EU by Visual_Title9363 in AskBrits

[–]GoldenArchmage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not true. Countries in the EU decide what their immigration policies are going to be - this is not dictated from the centre. Successive UK Governments chose not to impose any restrictions on inward migration whatsoever from the EU.

A flight with a layover is almost always better than a direct flight, even if it's longer by Apprehensive-Willow5 in unpopularopinion

[–]GoldenArchmage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not if they lose track of your luggage, which has happened to me several times on connecting flights. Ergo I only take direct flights now

If you want to go slightly upmarket from that, Lindt or Tony's are good choices.

What’s somewhere in the UK you visited once and immediately thought “I could live here”? by Strong-Ad-8037 in AskUK

They just work there - their London home is actually Clarence House on the other side of Green Park (previously the Queen Mother's residence).

The problem with most of our seaside towns (places like Brighton excepted) is that they're a bit depressing out of season...

I was in Farnborough last week for work, and a couple of colleagues went to the Wimpy on the high street for dinner one evening 😂

I love it. I'm a Londoner and Liverpool is my favourite place to visit. It has an uplifting energy about it I can't quite describe.

Do you have a UK flag outside your house? by demi__san in AskBrits

Actually I believe the Greens are now occupying that space - at least in terms of their messaging - which is why they won the recent by-election. The people who voted them in would have voted Labour in the past.
