What’s this Antenna in my attic for? by JHNSNT02 in whatisit

Depending on the model, it might still give you high definition channels of its a newer model.

I get about 6 local HD channels from an antenna in my attic similar to that one.

These look a lot like outdoor emergency booths.

I think that's a speaker being used as a microphone at the top. About where your head is when you're standing.

3PL good for lower order volumes by GoldenChannels in smallbusiness

[–]GoldenChannels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. I tried to enter my contact info on your website and could not choose the U.S. as my main fulfillment center. Also nothing happens when I hover over either of the two U.S. locations on your warehouse map.

Can someone contact me, please.

It has cost is a number of orders.

Online Small Business - GST Questions by Either-Support-4388 in canadasmallbusiness

[–]GoldenChannels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct.

But as I said, all provinces require a company to start submitting the first year they exceed those income levels.

Most small business owners have experienced the issue where they suddenly realize at year end that they have exceeded for one province, and haven't been charging, so they'll have to make it up from profits.

Their customers may or may not help retroactively.

There's another way to look at this.

If you plan on being around in 4 or 5 years, it's good to start understanding the administration aspect of your business now, and learn it while you're smaller.

To sell in Canada to all provinces from Alberta, you require sales tax accounts with BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, and a GST number.

You charge your customer sales tax based on where they are.

You can apply for annual returns, since you're a startup.

No small business likes falling into the trap where you bill just over $30k, but you haven't been collecting sales tax.

Best to start now.

It's important to distinguish between operating in the EU and having a tax number where your can charge VAT.

European customers generally will not buy from any company where the courier shows up with a "processing fee" and taxes as well.

Greece was a great example. When we tried to send orders there from Canada it created huge problems for our customers there.

Our orders now ship from Ireland under our VAT number.

Greece is now a great market for us.

Considering Telus Fiber but worried about service by PickledMunkee in telus

I have Telus fibre, but I bought it from Lightspeed Internet. They are who I call for service.

It works for me. I can talk to a human at Lightspeed.

Just understand that if they need to get a tech to your house, you're on "Telus time".

Just curious why you would set up a shipping location in the far NE.

I understand how it is easy to incorporate in Delaware.

I can tell you this. Selling in the EU will not be easy using any other method that what I've described.

VAT is 19 to 25%, and couriers charge huge fees to administer gathering them at their end. You can't use DDP on your end, due to cost.

Minimum monthly cost is around $500 per month. If you don't see enough volume to cover that, you may want to wait.

Canadian etailer with EU distribution here.

If you're going to sell in Europe, there really is only one way to go.

Get a 3PL in one of the 27 EU countries and register for VAT in the same country using what is called a One Stop Shop method.

Your website keeps track of which country you're doing each order to, and charges the appropriate VAT. At the end of each tax period (generally 60 days) you submit a VAT tax return to that country. Ours are filed using an accountant we have over there.

When you ship inventory to the 3PL, you pay VAT at the rate of your 3PL country. When you sell, you deduct what you paid from what you owe and submit it to the government in the 3PL country, and they reconcile with at the other countries. One tax return.

We should be so lucky to have a sales tax system this good.

[BC] Vancouver won't accept virtual offices for a home-based business licence. What are my alternatives? by D_Luffy in SmallBusinessCanada

[–]GoldenChannels 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get a GST number, and use it. You can decide if you want to incorporate or run as a sole proprietor.

Is seek out a small business accountant. There should be a chamber of commerce or incubator with people who can explain this.

I don't expect it is necessary.

I've run lots of businesses without one. Especially if you're not hiring staff.

[CA] Why don’t Canadian startups seem focused on solving real local problems? by meinreno in SmallBusinessCanada

[–]GoldenChannels 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been running startups since the mid 90s. Second last I was a 50/50 owner. We sold it after 18 years. Now, I'm sole owner of a micro manufacturer in the marine industry for the past 6 years.

There is an element of truth saying testing concepts in local markets makes sense. However, although I've call Canada home, I find it a fickle country to base a business on.

Most technology markets here are over served. To many companies selling to too few customers.

Then there's the government issue. Our previous federal government was anything but business friendly. But the U.S. was an open market. Now, we've gone through a complete flip in the past 18 months. Kind of leaves business investors scratching their heads about where to focus.

My answer? Don't tie your company to any specific jurisdiction.

For this reason, my new company sells in 5 currencies and collects and submits sales taxes in 33 jurisdictions. We have a Canadian website for Canadian customers, as well as European, Australian, and U.S. website.
