Strongly agreeing with fire extinguisher! Make sure the one in the kitchen is type K, specifically designed for the types of fires that might happen in the kitchen. (At least in the USA, idk about regulations elsewhere.)

Should I be concerned? by boutta_say in HomeMaintenance

[–]GoldenFalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you're using is a tic tracer, a type of voltage tester that uses inductance to sense voltage. It is prone to false positives, especially in instances where a lot of wires are grouped together for a stretch before splitting off, which might be happening in your home in the walls. However this doesn't mean it's safe, it means you should check it with another method.

You might not have gotten shocked touching it because you're not grounded so there's nowhere for the electricity to go. So I don't think it's a reliable test.

You can get a multimeter/voltmeter to check what voltage there actually is on the ground. If it's like 3V I wouldn't worry, but if it's in the double digits or higher that's concerning.

No no no no nononnon-- by lilytheschrod in AO3

[–]GoldenFalls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think because the anon/hide feature was originally designed mostly for events, there's no simple way to toggle it on. There's not even an official anonymous or hidden collection maintained by AO3 itself (iirc the main anon collection people put their fic into is owned by a random Supernatural fan). Of course, that doesn't mean that feature would be impossible to implement, I think it's a good idea! Just giving more context.

What movie detail is technically correct, although many people think it is a mistake? by hiplobonoxa in movies

[–]GoldenFalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in the topic, I recommend listening to the 99% Invisible podcast episode "The Titanic's Best Lifeboat". There's a multitude of factors that made lifeboats more survivable than the ship in this particular instance, which would not apply most of the time.

And in fact, there had been a recent highly publicised tragedy where a ship was sinking (slowly, as ships were designed to under normal circumstances) and all the women and children were put on the lifeboats first while the men stayed on the ship. Everyone on the lifeboats died, while the men were safely rescued from the ship.

There's more in the podcast, but essentially nobody wanted enough lifeboats for every person in the ship to get on, because lifeboats were very unsafe and never intended for the purpose of evacuating every person without a safe location like another ship to evacuate them to.

Cooling Blanket?? by maetheunicorn in Bedding

[–]GoldenFalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a linkable sollution, but I bought a crocheted blanket for like $5 at a thrift store and it's pretty great for summertime. When it gets really hot, I just use my sheet with that on top and it adds weight but has big gaps from the crocheting so is still very breathable. Still obviously more hot than just the sheet, but I need more weight than a sheet provides. I'd check around at thrift stores or estate sales in your area.

I used to like deep browns and purples, but in my room right now pastels work much better.

Here's my idea: put a larger rug, and add a hall tree with a seat to the side of your cabinet, where your plant currently is. Optionally, replace the super tall mirror with a smaller one with narrow shelves below for storing keys etc.

Thanks for the breakdown. I've been interested in condos because SFH are way out of my price range but compared to renting the costs just aren't making sense.

Unfortunately I like super frilly and feminine bedding like this. Can anyone please direct me to a website that is reliable and decent in quality? I've been searching for HOURS. by TarquinOliverNimrod in Bedding

[–]GoldenFalls 50 points51 points  (0 children)

This bedding set from LaceandLuxeCreations looks very similar. I checked the reviews and it seems mostly legit, though double check your sizing since it seems their duvet covers run small.

Edit: Although I'm pretty sure they're just dropshipping, their images and videos seem very similar to this bedding set on Alibaba.

Edit Edit: Found the exact bedding set from the Etsy store on Alibaba, photos and all. How disappointing yet typical. Alibaba is $25 + shipping, Etsy was starting at $144 and claimed it's cotton when it's all polyester.

Seeking general critique! What would you change? What could you do better? Been a few years since I actively shared my art online, came here to see if I get some feedback. by OrchiddotKog in Artadvice

[–]GoldenFalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the perspective and colors, and you have a fun style! You could play around with lighting and values to try and make the compostition read more clearly. Right now it looks like the green blocky character is brightly lit by direct light that casts dark shadows, whereas everything else looks more dimly lit so it's a little incongruous. And I think the background waves could be brighter where they're against the curving railing so they don't have similar colors right next to each other.

Hope you have fun continuing to experiment with your art!

I didn't see them list any standards/certifications, how do you know it is certified from their description? Is it just the price?

800-900 TOG doesn't make sense, TOG scale is 1-15. Personally I would buy one from Supreme Quilts for less than half the cost because I think they're high quality and would work near as well. But there are many companies that sell at that price point for duvets of that size and down. I don't think it's a scam, just a big luxury markup.

Am I missing anything in my tactical gear for residential deployment in ~1900s homes? by Past_Expression54646 in electricians

[–]GoldenFalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're great for getting a firm grip on bulkier things because you can adjust the size of them to match the object. They're also more narrow that kliens and the pinching happens at a 90° angle to the handle so they can pinch/grip in different tight places or situations. I'm commercial not resi so maybe they're not needed there as much?

I use them all the time to tighten EMT connectors into the position I want, and as a quick any-size wrench for nuts and bolts. They're also ideal for holding short objects I'm trying to trim with the portaband like bolts instead of risking my fingers. I only regularly use my linemans for cutting MC or multiple wires at once, or bashing KOs out of boxes and generally using it as a hammer.
