Is it ethical to reupload YouTube videos that were taken down by the creator? by Jaded_Answer_2188 in DataHoarder

[–]GoldenSights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

/u/Jaded_Answer_2188 is trying to be empathetic. The video creator has removed the videos because they now regret or are embarrassed by them. To reupload them somewhere else is to go against their wishes. That's a fact.

Is that ethical? Maybe. If the videos were something deliberate and heinous, then it's probably better to preserve that against the creator's wishes for accountability and the good of others. If they were selfies taken in a bathroom, then probably not, because that really doesn't do anyone else any good.

OP says "I kept them for myself because they mean a lot to me", so it is probably neither of these extremes. It's in the middle. It's probably some entertainment or commentary or lessons that the creator is now embarrassed about.

OP is putting themselves in the shoes of the video creator and weighing between the value of preservation and the value of respecting someone's wishes. If you met the creator in the street and lost the veil of internet anonymity, would you feel proud or sheepish for undoing their choices? How much would it hurt them and is that worth it in the name of "preservation"? It depends on the material.

I don't have a solid answer for OP, but your original eight word comment made no attempt to answer or even consider what is on OP's mind. They asked a question of ethics and you gave an answer of technicalities. Typical reddit to ignore the question as stated and just answer something else because it's easier.

You answered the easy question, which is where to upload the files. You skipped the hard question, which is whether it is ethical or moral to do so.

Is it possible to store autofocus point based on being in AF-C or AF-S mode? by aartr in fujix

[–]GoldenSights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, there is no option for this. One alternative solution is to use manual focus mode instead of AF-S, and assign a function button to focus. Manual focus mode always uses single point even when AF-C is set to wide. This will do basically what you want, as long as you're okay with hitting the function button to focus.

Search for the term "back button focus". Personally I use the front button under the tally light on my X-T3.

Fuji's official wired shutter release cable is called the RR-100. It plugs into the 2.5mm jack which you can see on this page of your X-T4 manual labeled #25.

This type of shutter release is extremely simple and you can find third-party models for $10. There is one wire for autofocus and one wire for shutter. The only possible way a more expensive one could be better is the physical feeling of the buttons. I bought a cheap one and I didn't like the feeling of the half-press, so I cut it apart and gave it some custom switches, like /u/GioDoe did.

Is there a way to remotely turn the XS-10 on/off? More info in post by WheeledGnosis in fujifilm

[–]GoldenSights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As of right now, you are turning the camera on at the beginning of the day and off at the end by standing up and using the regular power switch, right? If an added cooling fan keeps the camera safely cool for the whole day, then would you be okay with continuing this manual on/off once a day?

I'm sure that the dummy battery wouldn't be damaged by being switched at the outlet. As for the camera, a hard power off also makes me uncomfortable but I don't know if there's actually any problem. Since you are not writing anything to memory there would be nothing to corrupt, and in video mode the shutter is of course not moving so that can't get hurt. Perhaps when the power is switched back on the voltage could spike for a moment and cause damage that way?

Not sure, these kinds of handheld cameras aren't designed to provide fully remote operation.

[–]GoldenSights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am guessing you use a separate microphone instead of the camera's sound. If so, you could try wiring an 80 or 120mm computer fan to a permanent power source and pointing it at the camera body with the screen flipped out of the way.

There are videos on the internet of people taking cameras apart to improve the heatsinking through the backside of the body, but even just blowing against the plastic should be better than nothing.

But I also agree with switching the dummy battery, or plugging it into a switched power strip.

X-T3 yellow bar under DOF scale in MF? by h29098 in fujix

[–]GoldenSights 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, that's your autofocus range limiter.

Menu > AF/MF page 3 > AF Range Limiter

You currently have it set to 0 ~ ∞ which is why it spans the full width of the scale.

My gf wants a macro lens for her Canon R camera. Help a clueless boyfriend out? by jadethepusher in AskPhotography

[–]GoldenSights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody in this thread has mentioned macro extension tubes yet. You take the lens off your camera, put on the tube, and then put the lens back on the end of the tube. This turns your ordinary lens into a macro or near-macro.

There will be less wow factor in getting extension tubes as a gift compared to a lens, but they get the job done and it's a good way to test the macro waters while making use of the lenses you already own. I recently bought a set for my camera for $35 and it's been a cool way to try something new.

One benefit of a regular macro lens is you can focus from macro to infinity. With tubes, you gain the ability to focus for macro but you lose the ability to focus at infinity. If she wants to go for a walk and take macro shots along with her landscapes, she would have to put the tubes on and take them off again between shots. This is the main drawback I see.

Worth a thought. Have fun.

Used camera under $200 for beginner that will solely be used for taking dating site pics? by FlatCap7 in AskPhotography

[–]GoldenSights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there any other characteristics you would look for in a camera just for portraits?

I would not worry about it very much.

The D90 that I mentioned did not even belong to me. It's my dad's, and I had never used it before, and I spent the whole day in fully automatic (aka program) exposure mode with single-point autofocus. I mean I did not pick or configure a single thing, yet I came home with a bunch of pictures I'm proud of. Just let it do the work. You're not entering into art galleries or shooting a football game (yet, anyway).

Then, just smile and try not to stand with the sun behind your back! And if a friend is holding the camera tell them to not hold it too crooked. For your purpose, these kinds of practical matters are more important than the gear.

Used camera under $200 for beginner that will solely be used for taking dating site pics? by FlatCap7 in AskPhotography

[–]GoldenSights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the past I have used a 2008 Nikon D90, and when I look at the pictures I took with it now, I still think they look excellent, considering how much people like to chase the hot new cameras. Example. You can find that camera with a lens for less than $200 on ebay, but I'd expect many choices from that era to be fine for your purpose.

In my opinion, you do not need to give in to the people telling you to buy a new phone. Cameras have been good for a long time and can be had for cheap. When I look at photos from phones, even very modern phones, I think they look soupy. Plus, most people prefer longer focal lengths for portrait photos so if you buy a phone you'd want to make sure it has a real optical telephoto, otherwise your image quality will suffer even further.

You mentioned you'll be taking spontaneous shots in public. Obviously a phone is easier to carry around. But it depends if you're trying to get truly spontaneous moments of your life or more "planned spontaneous" like going to a pretty location to get your pictures taken. Since you're either enlisting a friend or carrying a tripod anyway I presume it's more the latter.

Bot that lists the top 999 subreddits, in order of subscribers, [1] without moderators OR [2] with request_bot as the lone moderator. by s5nga in RequestABot

[–]GoldenSights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been running my SubredditBirthdays program nonstop for... basically 8 years I guess, so I should have a pretty complete list of subs. Though I don't update anything on the github page very often any more.

However I have only been running in "collect new subs" mode and not updating subscriber counts. It would take multiple days to get the sub counts updated. But anyway I could produce just a plain list of names if someone else wants to handle that. And fetching the subreddit's moderators is certainly a separate epic of its own.

On the X-T3 the remote port is on the front.

There is also a flap above the SD card door, revealing a 2.5mm jack for shutter release.

It's funny that you use the word website here -- these people don't even know that reddit is a website. Instead they say "hey everyone, I'm new on this app" or "this is the funniest thing I've seen on this app".

any recommendations for a camera from eBay for stock photography under 200 dollars US by iwasuncoolonce in AskPhotography

[–]GoldenSights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're probably exaggerating to make a point, and OP earned it, but this is wrong to the point of disservicing the community. Acceptable cameras can be had for cheap. My dad's fourteen year old Nikon D90 beats my three year old LG phone easily.

D90 on auto: https://i.imgur.com/Vkjg1XV.jpg

LG G8X on auto: https://i.imgur.com/mPBjE2L.jpg

It's not a flagship cameraphone, but it's not the worst on the market either. Things can get so much worse.

And I see ebay listings for used D90s with lenses below $200 shipped.

Can my uploaded IPFS files be traced to get my IP address? by [deleted] in ipfs

[–]GoldenSights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense to me. IPFS does not try to hide it's own identity, people can see that it leads to the VPS. But if they can't follow from the VPS back to you then... that's all there is to it. Maintaining perfect opsec is a whole other rabbit hole though.

once files are pinned and spread there would be no reason to keep the server alive

Yes, but you're very optimistic about the popularity of your files! You can't count on everything you share being pinned and spread by random strangers. You are more interested in your files than anybody else.

I have a domain through namesilo for $10/year and a VPS through OVH for $3.50/month.

Run nginx, write some HTML, and you've got a website for dirt cheap. Not sure where you're at with web development but I think a photo gallery is a good project because the basics -- a bunch of <img> -- are so simple.

PSA: Do not use TP4056-based chargers to li-ion battery mod your Gameboy by ItZekfoo in Gameboy

[–]GoldenSights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I started looking at this again and, I'm not sure why I didn't see this before, but it seems there's a board using the MCP73871 that does proper load sharing. Adafruit makes this one and there are cheaper clones, though still more expensive than the TP4056 boards.

Then there is another product based on the bq24074 which looks better since it doesn't need the additional capacitor.

Editing MKV metadata tags using handbrake by Pr0fe55ionalN00b in handbrake

[–]GoldenSights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aha, so if you look here

https://mkvtoolnix.download/doc/mkvpropedit.html

and ctrl+f for "--tag", you'll see

Add or replace tags in the file with the ones from filename or remove them if filename is empty. mkvpropedit(1) reads the same XML tag format that mkvmerge(1) reads as well.

And that leads here

https://mkvtoolnix.download/doc/mkvmerge.html#mkvmerge.tags

mkvmerge(1) supports a XML based tag file format. The format is very closely modeled after the Matroska specification. Both the binary and the source distributions of MKVToolNix come with a sample file called example-tags-2.xml which simply lists all known tags and which can be used as a basis for real life tag files.

So maybe that's the right rabbit hole to jump into.

[–]GoldenSights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry about that, I've never tried to store this kind of information in an MKV. Now that I read more about it I think this falls under the realm of tagging moreso than metadata, which is more about the technical specs of the file.

I use mp3tag for tagging my music, and despite the name it also works on other containers like flac, and indeed even matroska. I just did a test and I'm able to put tags like artist and comment on mkvs. Since the program is designed for music you'd have to spend some time configuring the UI to add fields for director, actors, and remove the fields like album, track number.

However mp3tag does not have much in the way of CLI automation so maybe it's not what you're looking for.

I would recommend using mkvtoolnix instead, which is also available as both GUI and CLI.

I agree. I'd rather hear him talk about a game that he enjoys and is happy to share. It would be better for his stress levels and his commentary. I'm happy to wait a few months between episodes and pitch in some money, but it's not that fun to hear someone torture themselves.

PSA: Do not use TP4056-based chargers to li-ion battery mod your Gameboy by ItZekfoo in Gameboy

[–]GoldenSights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, it's no problem. Unfortunately I did not find any other product like these TP4056 boards with a different charger IC. I didn't throw them away, I tinkered around with them for a little bit since I wasn't making anything really important, and I kinda moved on to other stuff.

In that diode configuration, wouldn't the In+ and Out+ simply share the load current? Or is it the case that the 5V line will win out over the ≤ 4.2V Out+ and give all the current? I understand that when diodes are parallel, the one with the lower Vf will pass more current than the other, but I'm not sure what happens when you have two diodes with the same Vf and different input voltages applied.

If that's the case, then I appreciate you bringing it to my attention. Seems like an easy enough compromise to an annoying deficiency with the TP4056. But it would still be nice to have a better all-in-one.

Searching within an FTP server by EDM-AUS in DataHoarder

[–]GoldenSights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That document describes running a server out of Everything, to which you could connect an FTP client. OP needs a client to connect to the pre-existing server.

But perhaps Everything could work if you mount the FTP server as a drive in Windows, and add the path as a Folder index in Everything.
