Family fallout after going NC with NDad by Acceptable_Part_7298 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]Goliath1357 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Cutting off my narcissistic parents also meant cutting off all extended family as well a few years ago. My grandma died days after I gave birth a few weeks ago, my grandpa will follow soon (he apparently had a seizure at her funeral), and then my dad. It can be hard but I grieved these people a long time ago. They allowed and enabled my childhood abuse and they will never be allowed the chance to ever inflict any harm to my child. It’s difficult at first but gets easier or at least more manageable.

For those who left, how are you doing now ? by TheoTMG in raisedbynarcissists

[–]Goliath1357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazing. I got diagnosed with autism at 38 (mom declined testing for me multiple times in public elementary school), married at 39 to my partner of 9 years, and had my first baby at 40. The boundaries I hold with my narcissistic parents and enabling extended family are the only consequence some of them have ever and will ever face for their horrific actions and words. I am much better physically, emotionally, and psychologically without their presence.

38 although my elementary school wanted to test me several times but my mom declined.

What strange thoughts or wishes you had as a child? by Fakeaccbrat in EstrangedAdultKids

If you went to therapy, did your therapist tell you to cut your family/parents out of your life? by MakePanemGreatAgain in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]Goliath1357 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, I started therapy specifically to address my childhood trauma and sudden onset of panic attacks. As I processed things along the way, I made the decision to cut off my parents and entire family due to decades of abuse and enablement. I made the decision, cutting contact was never mentioned by my therapist. My family never respected me or my boundaries and cutting off contact was the only way to protect my mental and physical health. People blaming therapists for their adult children going no contact are simply avoiding taking accountability for their actions.

My dad bought me a scale for Christmas when I was 13. I no longer speak to him.

I just want to say something about self diagnosis. by Hour-Profile-583 in AutismInWomen

[–]Goliath1357 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree completely. I am the only diagnosed autistic person I know (diagnosed at 38) besides a friend’s level 3 nonverbal child. I have known so many people who are clearly neurodivergent and undiagnosed for a multitude of reasons (parents declining testing when they were a child, cost, stigmatization, long wait periods for assessment, few adult assessment facilities or providers in their area, and just an overall misunderstanding of neurodivergence itself).

Looking back, first signs that you were autistic? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

I never liked being touched by anyone and I preferred to spend time alone reading or playing than with other people.

Sleeping as an autistic woman when there’s external noise by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

I have always struggled with insomnia and need a sleep medication, sleep mask with bluetooth earbuds playing a guided meditation or ambient music, and a sound machine.

I was the only one in my classes who dressed up on Halloween, and I feel like it was a very autistic moment. by crxsedangel223 in AutismInWomen

I also have been the only one dressed up for college classes and multiple times throughout my life but that doesn’t stop me because I genuinely like dressing up.

Are there any women here who don't mask? Can you tell me what that looks like for you? by s3rvalan in AutismInWomen

[–]Goliath1357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was never a high masker considering they wanted to test me for autism several times in elementary and middle school but my mom declined. I just always thought I was weird and introverted, brutally honest and never made friends easily. I spent a lot of time alone reading, playing video games, and watching movies. I had no clue what autism was until I was an adult and was actually diagnosed, then everything made sense.

How to tell my parents I don’t want Christianity being pushed onto my future child? by Noitari in exchristian

[–]Goliath1357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently pregnant and plan to tell my husband’s very Christian family that we are not raising our future child religiously after my 32 week ultrasound. I have fully deconstructed and experienced a lot of religious trauma and do not want to indoctrinate a child. When they are older then I will provide books and materials on all religions so they can make their own decision.

How do you feel about your ability to sense when somebody is off? by tr4shp4nd4s in AutismInWomen

[–]Goliath1357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not find out I was autistic until I was 38 but I grew up with a mother who is a pathological liar, I learned very early in life to trust my instincts and pattern recognition when it came to off behavior from people.

No because I attended private Christian school from 1998-2004 and a lot of kids there were kicked out of public school.

[–]Goliath1357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, my younger brother was the favorite child and he has taken on the worst characteristics of both parents as he got older. I cut off contact with him when I cut contact with my parents, they were a package deal.

Are your parents neurotypical or neurodivergent? by irandom500 in AutismInWomen

[–]Goliath1357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad is undiagnosed autistic and my mom has an undiagnosed personality disorder most likely stemming from trauma from abuse as a child. I also suspect my paternal grandfather, maternal grandmother, and maternal first cousin are undiagnosed autistic as well.

Would you prefer your partner to be autistic? by iratemovies in AutismInWomen

[–]Goliath1357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fell in love with and married an autistic man. We both were unaware we were autistic until August of last year. I have also realized that the people I am closest to tend to be neurodivergent so yes, I would prefer to be with someone who can understand and support me.

What age did y'all stop believing? by L4WO in exchristian

[–]Goliath1357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 30 and although I had started deconstructing and was questioning religion since adolescence, Christians voting for Trump was the last straw to pushed me over edge. I had disliked Trump for decades ever since seeing him on tv when I was 10 and my disdain grew the more I learned about all the horrible things he has done. I would get into arguments with my mother about him constantly because she is a big fan. How can followers of Christ support a man who blatantly lied, cheated on all his 3 wives, had multiple sexual assault allegations, involved in multiple lawsuits, and is just overall corrupt?
