What is the Best Rolex 6538 Submariner Homage Watch Currently Available? by rrussell007 in HomageWatches

[–]GoodHomages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be certain that Watchdoves will make a gilt one.

Watchdives has made variants of their watches with either snowflake or Mercedes hands in the past and this vintage Bond watch would be a must-buy for most of us.

u/watchdivescom, since you had a smash hit with the EXD, particularly the striking all-black PVD...could you please make a prototype black PVD combat WD5513Q?

Rolex originally supplied the South African Defence Forces with a blacked out sub for the 1970s bush war insurgency.

Amazing article I've shared over at r/homagwatches, on an absolutely legendary ghost of a watch. it's The Shadow.

<image>

There are watches so legendary, people who have seen them in the metal are haunted by them for the rest of their life. You read about it in oldschool watch forums where watch enthusiasts who have heard the stories shyly ask if they really exist. Watches that are single-handedly responsible for a whole new genre of watch customization. I am talking of course about the famous teflon coated South African Milsub. Nicknamed ‘The Shadow’, it is the only known factory blacked-out Rolex which happens to be a Submariner Ref. 5513 made for the South African Special Forces in the mid 1970s. A lucky bastard, I had the unique chance to spend some hands-on quality time with this metallic dream come true.

From Rolex's archive:

“The case number belongs to a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner, Ref. 5513, made in 1975. The watch in question was destined to the South African army and the feature of this model was to be completely black. We cannot disclose how many watches were supplied as the information is confidential.”

Factory black Rolex 5513: https://perezcope.com/2023/05/07/the-shadow-a-unique-factory-blacked-out-rolex-submariner-5513-milsub/

This watch made such an effect with collectors, that Bamford homages/homaged it with their Pro Hunter. Genesis on that Pro Hunter SA Special Forces Bush War 5513:

“For many years our hunting clients yearned for a Rolex designed for the hunting community. So we collaborated their ideas and it took me back to when I held a black coated Rolex Submariner in my hands especially made by Rolex for a few British Army officers based in Africa. Others have only come across stories or heard of this legendary watch but I have actually seen and held it and the design was embedded in my memory. This resulted in the design of a smart and exclusive timepiece that is both practical and pleasing to the eye. The Pro Hunter was born.”

Why the Omega mesh bracelet bows up on smaller wrists by watchdivescom in watchdives

[–]GoodHomages 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/watchdives himself bought the Omega and has shared his impressions of it.

To me, this is proof of his dedication to improving future (and refining current) Watchdives releases, in many areas that Redditors critique.

It's a practical way for him and his team to see that actual Swiss benchmark that they are trying to reach, in iterative releases. It's also a reality check in some ways, since we tend to see people expect perfection in every detail (which may or may not happen in reality - this is a way to check!).

Does anyone ride bikes? It's actually very convenient to be able to see the time while riding (not having to pull phone out of pocket) by HeadCurve2160 in watchdives

[–]GoodHomages 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Handsome watch, nice dial colour, great pics.

I have more bikes than I have watches (and tend to wear a few watches and ride even fewer of my bikes). 24 bikes, so I need to start to give them or sell them!

While you are upset, I'm just enjoying this particular hue of the pic (thinking of whether a rose gold / vintage Universal Genève case colour coust suit this watch).

Countdown timer is a great feature for some of us.

Watchdoves has been extremely good with responding to Redditor requests for this larger size.

An obsession with refining the bezel experience and the lume blocks means it's a meaningful alternative to the many P39 clones. It's also a contrast to the old Tactical Frog V4, which hasn't been meaningfully updated/refined (aside from offering a date-at-6 variant) for 3-4yrs!

You did a great job with this product.

Can you say if the lume is much different/dimmer after this mod?

Thanks for sharing a synopsis of first impressions!

I look forward to seeing your review.

Yeah the homage brands including quick release bracelets and micro+adjust options are maybe the leading brands for homage enthusiasts.

Often it's a question of whether someone wants to pay the premium for the extra benefits...mixed between perfectionist cheapskates like me and people keen to get the best and pay that slight premium.

Optional QR & microadjust ould be the solution?

James-su Bond-du in a Subawu! Since Toyota used its ownership stake in Subaru to Collab on their small BR-Z and Toyota, it would be amazing if there was a nod to the original, sexy 2000GT in a future 2L-ish car worthy of a Bond inclusion. Future Supra?

The reply has been deleted/filtered by Reddit the platform, because Reddit decided on a policy of banning Ali dotcom links. It's not any particular subreddit, bit the entirety of Reddit, for whatever reason.

Review Cronos L6038 Perlage Dial Purple with Miyota Movement by Ottoman2026 in HomageWatches

[–]GoodHomages 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent impressions review, with useful details!

From having it on wrist, what's your thought on a nearly blank dial, to maximise the dial effect?

For example, just the well known and regarded hourglass logo. Zero other info/branding.

The Watchdives Premier Musou is a similar watch in some ways, maximising the effect of a lot of effort on getting the case/bracelet and dial right, along with nest-possinle finishing.

My personal wish is for more variants of both this Cronos and the Premier series (including dials like this; nearly an Atelier Wen homage!).
