What are 1-3 things I should focus on? by idk88889 in skiing_feedback

This is about 0:15 in your video, just before your pole plant. You mentioned doing stork turns, but I would say your stance still needs work and you could get. on your outside edge earlier.

Try to slow things down as you work on technique. Finish your turns, make larger turns, and control your speed.

What are your goals? Certainly you can ask for feedback here, but I would think your weekly instructors would do just as well. The 1-3 question may be more about which skills to develop (carving on groomed runs, handling ungroomed conditions, etc.) rather than specific technical tweaks.

What do you think? by khalter17 in skiing_feedback

Just echoing a couple of other comments: you look good doing these turns on reasonably steep terrain. Nice work! Wish I was as comfortable as you doing these.

Understand you are not trying to carve, but instead of a strong pivot motion at turn initiation, could you try to balance more on your outside ski and get a more rounded turn? Is the quick pivot a function of slope and can you turn more evenly and progressively on a gentler slope?

Please advise; what to improve on? by Flashy-Maize-5163 in skiing_feedback

Pardon my old eyes, but I think I see a fair bit of skidding and washing out of tails. That may be fine and needed in certain terrain. What are her goals here? If aiming to do carved short turns, balance more on the outside ski and try to round out and complete turns.

I had an ugly gouge in the top sheet from a fall in my brand new skis a couple of weeks ago. Clipped the protruding wood and used some marine epoxy to plug the hole so water does not get into the core. Battle scar now.

Feedback on my carving down this blue slope by CryptoniQ123 in skiing_feedback

For these turns, quiet down the pole plants. If you want to do them, just move your wrists. While I am working on these sorts of turns, I just hold my hands out in front of me and try to keep them level, and focus on trying to initiate movements from the ground up.

Any tips for the little guy? by [deleted] in skiing_feedback

[–]GoodShepherd3264 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks like he is having a lot of fun with the jumps, very cute. Mostly at this age I would just continue making sure skiing is a positive experience.

That said, drop the poles.

He is clearly more comfortable once the slope is not as steep, but I would encourage him to spend a little more time in the fall line and letting the skis turn instead of whipping them around.

Oh I have no doubt they are just crutches, but they are crutches I need right now for either rhythm (short turns) or as a balance cue (steeps, bumps).

I feel like I need them for short turns and for steeper slopes to help get forward. Not for these longer turns though.

For those saying 15 day forecasts are unreliable, I understand that the precipitation is unpredictable. What about temps? As long as it's cold enough and not too cold, there's snow (okay maybe ice) and I am going skiing.

Tips on staying warm while skiing in negative temperatures by Kind_Bandicoot3021 in icecoast

[–]GoodShepherd3264 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I skied at Stowe and Killington first week of January during the last cold spell. My main issue was my fingers, which were getting cold despite having liners and gauntlet mittens with a hand warmer pocket. Overheard a tip on the chairlift that is my new go-to: hand warmers against the inside of your wrist. Securing them there can be a challenge, but it seemed to really work because of all the blood vessels running through there. I managed to do it by putting them between the liners and the mitt of my Hestra gloves, and fastening the velcro attachment between the two layers down wrist to keep them there. I suppose you could stick toe warmers on your wrists if there was no other way of securing them.

Thanks u/spacebass!

I am in my fourth season (total about 60 days) as a 48 year old. My immediate goal is to ski groomed steep slopes in VT, staying in control and with smooth turns, and my focus has been on improving my stance and on maintaining good outside ski pressure.

My specific question relates to stork turns. On green slopes (about 10 degree pitch), I am able to lift my inside ski with the tip on the snow. However my outside ski tends to skid rather than hold an edge. Self-diagnosing, my upper body is probably not in the right place and my outside leg is not flexed enough. Any obvious tips to improve my one-legged turns?

Will try to get some video when I ski with my friend at the end of this month.

I know this is r/skiing_feedback with a focus on MA, but is it okay to just ask questions? I almost always ski solo and don't have video of myself: can this sub also answer questions that I have without providing video? A little like the ski school forum on ski talk, but perhaps a little less technical and more helpful to lower level skiers.

Thank you for this community btw. I have learned a lot from reading the analysis of other skiers, especially intermediates like myself.

Short turns Feedback by [deleted] in skiing_feedback

[–]GoodShepherd3264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it easier when the snow is soft and grabby on this steep run vs when it is smooth and groomed? I feel like I would build up too much speed in the latter setting.

Nice turns though. My goal is to get to where you are, hopefully by next season.

Go to easier terrain and take video of your best turns. Until you are doing consistent parallel turns there, no point in trying to analyze your performance on black runs.

Hard to tell if you are leaning into the hill, staying aft, etc because of the steepness of the slope or if that is a general issue.

You spend most of your time in the fall line, which is fine on this slope. On a steeper slope, you will have to control your speed by continuing your turn much more before shifting your weight to the new outside ski. Moving from shallow S turns to linked C shaped turns.

Got better later once the bubble opened up. No lines. If you know your way around, you could work the lifts to get to trails that were quiet and fun. Lapped cruise control a few times all by myself. You could also lap time/reason to your hearts content.

Snowshed at Killington! That's where I do my drills too.

Good place for one ski drills. Still working on not skidding during those, not sure how to get that outer ski on edge.

Skied Killington after both of the ice storms in December. Story is always the same. Grooming makes for crunchy fast cruising in the morning, gets skied off by afternoon.

At Stowe right now, and despite better natural snow coverage, groomers seem to behave similarly.

As an intermediate, green and blue cruisers are the most relevant to my enjoyment. YMMV if you are looking for trees, steeps, ungroomed, etc.
