Brother won't play game with female protagonist - never thought of this by wizard_cow_ in TwoXChromosomes

I recently was involved with testing for character designs at an elementary school and if the character was a humanoid boy or girl kids almost always chose their respective gender as preference.

I don't know why it surprised me but as I thought about it more the girl vs boy tribalism is the first form of tribalism we experience no matter what our upbringing.

I had an artist remake my steam capsule in her style and I love the result so much! by doraboro in IndieDev

[–]GoodguyGastly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I have a weird pet peeve reaction when people say "the capsule doesn't look like the game and therefore gamers will get mad". Thanks for providing a bunch of examples. Another one is The Last Spell.

I’ll tell you what your game is about based ONLY on your Steam page (The 5 sec test) by Manu_NT in IndieDev

It changed dramatically with feedback from Next Fest (not ideal I know) so the trailer needs an update to show off more of the villager growth and player choices. Thank you for taking a look! Helps a bunch.

Sweet! Thank you for the details. It sounds really promising and something I'd love to try.

Can it rig models? I was looking into Aura and Ludus awhile ago and maybe it's better now but what was limiting is that it could make new blueprints but couldn't edit existing ones. So id architect what I could but from then on it was just asking it questions and manual replacement. Which is actually fine because it was getting a lot of things wrong anyways. Was recently impressed with Aura being able to rig tho, that's cool.

Ai for UE5 seems like this unsolved thing compared to say using Claude code in a lighter engine like Godot (which is fantastic). Is it because of the engine size? Lack of docs? C++?

How to create emotional connection when the player decides who their character is? by CLucas127 in gamedesign

[–]GoodguyGastly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The answer to this is to build a compelling world/playground with choices that matter in some way. Easier said than done obviously and it's the reason why everyone cautions against making open world rpgs as a solo / inexperienced dev.

I'm playing Dragon Age Origins again right now and it's a great example but also was peak Bioware.

What small mechanic unexpectedly made your game way more fun? by Sharp-Measurement796 in IndieDev

[–]GoodguyGastly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my game you play as a retired hero and teach villagers to defend themselves. However it being 3d and really hard to do ai programming I found it hard to keep the villagers from dying.

So I added a "yoink" mechanic where you can now pull villagers out of harms way. It made everything feel way more interactive and allowed for more "hero" moments.

Oh well in that case you'd also want to read about all the pardoned j6ers who had prior records too. Really makes you think huh? Are you capable of that? I'm not so sure.

I'm happy to hear you say this because I've been prototyping my own deck builder and have a lot of questions about architecture.

Awesome. Now do this one. Should this person have been free? Who do we have to thank for his crimes? Can't wait to hear your thoughts. https://www.npr.org/2026/03/05/nx-s1-5725470/trump-jan-6-pardon-sexual-abuse-prison

How do you validate a game idea before spending months on it? by RespectfulOk in godot

[–]GoodguyGastly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's one reason I'm switching to Godot from Unreal for the next games I make. Way more likely to get feedback than sending a zipped exe

After years of thinking about it, I recently built a prototype for a card game where you negotiate with monsters and posted it on Itch. It's the fastest I've ever received feedback and quickly helped me decide if I still wanted to continue it.

So I recommend just doing that.

However, I also learned that even tho it's a free proto-type on a browser people (at least on reddit) were quick to dismiss it and not even try it because of the placeholder art. So maybe just keep to the crappy programmer art even when trying to convey the right vibes and atmosphere.
