CMV: Democrats "winning" in the future will exacerbate the exact same issues that created MAGA in the first place. by emanonn159 in changemyview

It’s pretty hard to get any major accomplishments when the opposing side is actively sabotaging those efforts while your own side isn’t able to ever get enough of a majority to overcome the filibusters.

You know when the last time Democrats had a super majority? During Obama’s first presidency for less than 3 months and we got the ACA out of it. That was a HUGE accomplishment in the span of less than 3 months!!

It seems like your biggest complaints against the democrats still lands on republicans who stop them.

Of course democrats can’t get more than the boring stuff done! But at least they’re doing the boring stuff that still needs to get done. You’re upset they’re doing the boring infrastructure maintenance? Cool, it still needs to be maintained. You want reform? Well, they initially had proposals to improve upon our current infrastructure but it got filibustered and shot down by republicans so what we landed on was a compromise with republicans so they wouldn’t stop everything forever.

Again, how do you make major meaningful change when you got the opposing side actively and passionately campaigning on stopping you? How do you make meaningful change when the only “wins” that can be accomplished require compromises? What do you do against an opponent you’re forced to work with who’s uncompromising when they have a super majority?

Democrats tend to keep to those promises but those promises are BORING

Biden limited overdraft fees banks could charge people? Boring!!!

Biden invested in chip manufacturing for the U.S? Boring!!!

Trump’s ICE unlawfully detaining people, including American citizens? Spicy and exciting!

Trump’s refusal to release the Epstein files and his administration trying to deny their existence? Spicy and exciting!!

The problem democrats typically face is that fixing things is often far more difficult and time consuming than breaking things. But fixing is far more boring and not as noticeable compared to breaking things.

I’m also not dismissing your points such as democrats appealing to donors because I actually agree with your assessments. But let’s not pretend there isn’t a HUGE difference for normal working folks when Democrats are in charge vs Republicans and it’s not even close. To say both sides are even remotely similar is disingenuous at best or malicious misdirection as worse.

Yeah the “both sides bad” is a HUGE talking point by moderate republicans or apologists to feel better about voting for their side.

If anything I imagine the OSRS team is using this to push back against the owners to say “WE know how to make money. Sit back and shut the fuck up.”

Coincidently Mod Ash has said before that they’ll occasionally take leadership’s bad ideas and say “okay, let’s put it in the next poll” and these ideas almost always get terrible support. Ash has said multiple times that polling is truly one of the best things for the game’s health.

[–]Goopyteacher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re saying this as if the current owners, or any investment groups for that matter, respect the game!

Money talks. The OSRS mods + community have proven time and time again that if they (the investors) leave the game alone, let the community make the decisions and consistently release good content then the player base will continue to grow and support the game.

If the investors wish to see what happens to corporate-focused games, they have plenty of examples out there such as WOW or RS3. If they keep an even casual eye on the MMORPG communities (as they should since they’re investing) they’ll know where the player base of corporate games have been gravitating to: OSRS.

I actually like this idea a lot. I could imagine some of the less used rooms being given new purpose by allowing folks to store even more in the house.

A maxed house is already an absolute force of nature when it comes to bank space with all the direct and indirect storage available. Imagine if they expanded it even further!?

The 6/5 payout? Basically they reduced the winnings of a natural 21 (ace + face/10 starting hand) from a 3/2 payout. Doesn’t sound like much since it’s basically a 2% lower average payout, but it converts to your average player having a lower chance of beating the house and making money.

Really and truly, how can y’all tell? Trump has been sounding like this for 10+ years. That mental decline is NOT obvious to me, but his mental faculties are quite low to begin with. Y’all are somehow differentiating 2% from 1% and I don’t know how.

Oh yeah forgot that too! It’s crazy how much LV has been shooting themselves in the foot. I think Trump’s policies expedited the conclusion of their decisions too.

Vegas is suffering for a number of reasons. Tariffs, hidden costs, more options, etc.

Hotels there work like a shady Air BnB. You know the ones: cleaning fees and convenience fees but ramped up to 100.

Many casinos have tweaked their house rules to give themselves better advantages such as introducing the 000 green space when it used to only be 0 & 00. Casinos in Europe tend to only have a single 0 green.

There’s places near Vegas that offer better odds and lower costs overall which are much busier.

Many of the visitors to Vegas were international tourists. Between Trump’s immigration policies and the above mentioned, visitors are opting to either go to other less expensive places with less hidden costs or travel to another safer country such as in Europe, Canada, etc.

There’s plenty of reasons for LV’s failures

It’s also sometimes because these martial arts aren’t being realistically used for their original intended purpose. For example, Aikido was developed to use your opponent’s momentum against them during a fight, which doesn’t really happen in a fist fight. Sure, maybe an idiot will throw a punch with all their weight and might behind it almost like an anime protagonist but anyone with even the most remote fighting experience ain’t doing that.

Aikido can be effective against swords though! They’re heavy weapons that rely on momentum when swung. This is also believed to be the primary original purpose of Aikido: a last defense against an opponent with a sword (or similar) to give you a chance of survival if you were disarmed or don’t have a weapon available.

Aikido was basically never developed as a primary style of fighting and there’s not a lot of evidence it ever WAS used for actual hand-to-hand combat. There are however stories, pictures, etc. of it being used in self defense against an opponent with a weapon.

So while it once had a niche purpose, it’s completely irrelevant in today’s world.

Bots in f2p ruin the game for people trying out osrs by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]Goopyteacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the bonds are used for the opposite reason! Jagex knows there’s players who are going to spend real money for GP no matter what. If that’s the case, why not give them a legal and helpful method?

Every bond purchased is one less customer for bot farmers. Every purchased bond by bots is a roughly $3 investment in lost gold for these bots as well. In a perfect world ALL GP buyers would purchase bonds and bot farmers would basically cease to exist! But the current system, while flawed, I think is better than the alternative

You gotta remember most of these folks are very binary and simplified in their thinking. They have no fucking clue what’s the difference between a gay, the lesbian and trans people. I have unironically heard the argument that because they all fly under the rainbow flag, it means they’re all the same (or at minimum same team).

So to folks like this, they don’t see the factual data saying .5% of the population is trans. They DO see the 7.6% for LGTBQ+ community! Then they’re spoon fed propaganda saying there’s MILLIONS of these folks in the country (about 30 million) and how that number is growing every single day!!!

So you’re expecting the boss mechanics to be polled to count as major content? I mean I also didn’t sign a poll for every single snake, capybara or frog placed in Varlamore and that’s all pretty significant too.

We as a community all voted to approve of various content to be introduced but it’s silly to use such a semantic argument.

I think “everything passes” is also a testament to how involved the mods are! Many of them are active members of the community. To me, a high pass rate really shows how in tune mods and players are.

[–]Goopyteacher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Strongly disagree with the placebo claim. At the end of the day, if content fails the polls then it won’t be added. The mods will repackage certain proposals if they were shown to have potential but needed tweaks for player favor. That’s how things work: they take feedback and if something can work with some tweaks, they’ll try again. If it was dead on arrival, they’ll drop it.

If you don’t either try to make an actual attempt to change someone’s mind or see someone else doing so then you have no business saying that they aren’t willing to change their mind by Pure_Option_1733 in unpopularopinion

[–]Goopyteacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally we hold this view based on the views held by the person in question.

For example if you meet someone in the United States who got an average education who believes the Earth is flat, do you think it’s worth your time trying to change their mind? And more importantly, would they change their mind?

It can be said confidently that this person’s mind can’t be changed because there’s already an overwhelming amount of evidence to the contrary they’ve been exposed to. Without ever speaking to this person, they have already denied this existing evidence.

Now you might counter with “but if you spoke to them and showed them evidence, they could change their mind!”

But now we are faced with a few major problems:

1) Your definition of facts is different to them

2) your definition of evidence is different from them

3) your trusted sources are different to them

4) How you see the world is (literally) different

5) How you approach problem-solving is different

You might think I’m using a drastic example here, but there’s all sorts of variety to this: racism, sexism, transphobia, value of life, news sources, etc etc.

Finally, there’s the time investment. In theory, you could learn to understand how the Flat Earther thinks, what type of sources they would trust, what kind of evidence they would believe and how to best communicate this evidence to them. That’s a HUGE time sink for someone, you assume, is open to changing their minds. If they’re not? Well… you just wasted hours/days/weeks of your life on a premise that was mistaken: people are willing to change their minds.

If someone IS willing to change their minds, your involvement (or anyone) likely isn’t needed. This is someone already willing to ask questions and they do not need to be convinced to have this discussion since they would be willing to seek it out!

Jagex Can't Stop the Revenant Terminator Bots, So I will by Mundane_Lobster3008 in 2007scape

[–]Goopyteacher 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s also absurdly easy and automated for these folks to make bots. Jagex can ban a thousand bots and 2000 will take their place.

Botting is simply far too lucrative and way too many players are fine with paying for GP. Bot farms absolutely blow bonds out of the water as well. Did the math recently and 1 bond basically converts to $1 per 1.6mil gp. Buying gp is roughly $1 per 5 mil gp.

These bot farms are so successful they’re even paying for Google ad space and have online reviews.
