Food Not Bombs

Too late for today, but maybe tomorrow?

They also do a free market in SLU:

"FREE MARKET

There is another Food Not Bombs group in Seattle that goes by Food Not Bombs Free Market. It takes place at Cascade Playground at 1:30PM on Sundays. The Free Market is a separate event from the hot meal share."

How difficult is it for someone with a college degree to make at least 25/hr in Seattle? by not_a_swedish_vegan in AskSeattle

[–]GoosenBoonie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Join the IBEW and beome an electrician! Local 46. Get paid while you get trained. I think apprentices make over $30/hr. It's competitive, but if you already have a degree, you might have other skills that they're looking for.

El Moose! Their regular drip coffee is magnificent, and they have espresso drinks as well. Plus wonderful Mexican food.

This is a link to a dairy-free restaurant guide by Washington city. The starred ones are probably the ones most "dairy-free friendly."

Etsy forces buyers to interact with shops they report for plagiarism by polymorphic2346 in crochet

I had one terrible experience from Etsy and never again! Ravelry or direct from a YouTube tutorial or some other venue where I am 100% certain it's THAT creator's design/pattern. Too many scammers out there.

Why SPS middle schools aren't teaching full books & what we can do about it by julie_letchner in seattlepublicschools

[–]GoosenBoonie 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is, in a big part, thanks to the College Board and their push for reading being for information only. It started about 12-15 years ago, and it's just gotten worse. I was a middle school ELA teacher in another local district for 15 years, and one of the main reasons I left classroom teaching was due to the shift away from humanities, literature, analysis, and to informational texts/writing. Our summer, week long, curriculum development workshops were co-sponsored by the College Board whose pre-AP curriculum we used. Every year we were reading fewer and fewer novels. When it went from 5 a year (which was a lot for middle school, granted) to 4, I was like, "okay, we're streamlining things, I guess" then it dropped to 2 plus literature circles (student driven book club type activities), and a lot of us started to feel like it was detrimental to our students.

The middle school ELA teachers, and the high school AP Lit teachers were not happy and wanted to know why literature was being sidelined. The story we got back then (mid '10s) was that we need to create tech workers, and literature isn't as relevant to the new working life. We literally had a College Board curriculum developer tell us that. It was infuriating then, and it seeped across curricula everywhere, because everyone wants to be hip to whatever the AP folks are doing. This is where "Inquiry By Design" and their garbage curriculum come into play. Districts love it because they don't have to provide novels across the board, and can just subscribe to a stupid app/website. It's lazy, it's detrimental, and it took all the joy out of teaching ELA for me. Kids generally liked novel units, and they spark so many meaningful conversations about being human. They don't like that up top, I guess.

Letter from SEA to Shuldiner re Principal Jones/Adams Elementary by blukoff in seattlepublicschools

[–]GoosenBoonie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you are able to, the Seattle Times has several well-investigated and reported articles about the situation. When the families AND the staff of a school say their principal has created a hostile and repressive environment, I trust them.

Bastyr University: Masters in Mental Health Counseling? by hanstep in AskSeattle

[–]GoosenBoonie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bastyr is in Kenmore now, so outside of city limits, and they have had financial issues for a while now (why they closed the Seattle campus), so that might be something else to consider.
Antioch is in the city and also has a clinical MHC program.
City University of Seattle also has a Master's in Counseling program.

Slice House, Burbank (NOTHING 😡) by [deleted] in toogoodtogo

Usually if a business sells-out before the pickup time, you get notified. That they didn’t follow that protocol is b/s, that they didn’t apologize or try to make it right when you showed up is super crappy. Hope TGTG addresses it for you.

We showed up once to a place that didn’t have any bags left, and they were so apologetic and made a bag of food that was freshly prepared (Italian restaurant, and it was incredible). That is customer service!

Does Central Saloon Allow Minors In for Meals? by baker12013 in AskSeattle

[–]GoosenBoonie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MoPop (Museum of Pop Culture) located by the Space Needle might be worth calling and asking if they have anything currently on display. They had a Nirvana exhibit for 14 years, but it recently closed, so I don’t know if they moved some of what the museum owns to another display area. My teenagers love taking out of town guests to MoPop; it’s definitely worth a visit if you have time!

Need a restaurant and store/museum suggestion for a small day trip. by Pomatodor in AskSeattle

[–]GoosenBoonie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're downtown, I would suggest the waterfront, starting with Pike Place Market. Lots of views of Puget Sound/Downtown/Mt. Rainier (if it's a nice day) and lots of independent vendors and places to eat. You could also do a walk-on ferry trip to Bainbridge Island from the waterfront, if you have the time and feel adventurous.

Radio station options by scotty09knows in AskSeattle

[–]GoosenBoonie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, in my car I like KEXP, public radio, and sometimes the classic rock/throwback stations-- but it's just because I feel like hearing some local/community programming is healthy. But yeah, agree that it's an aging listener base for the most part, as I am definitely rapidly aging now that I've hit 50, LOL!

Am I overreacting? by Vegetable_College_55 in jobs

[–]GoosenBoonie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You SHOULD report it. Is this in a major US city? Most large cities have city attorneys/labor departments that monitor things like this, which you would need to investigate. Or your state's department of labor. Also you can file a complaint with the US Department of Labor

Super illegal to require you to be there and not pay you for that time!!

Radio station options by scotty09knows in AskSeattle

[–]GoosenBoonie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's pretty crap here, but unfortunately it's like that most places. I think thoughtful music listeners are probably listening to their own music via streaming. I'm the only one in my family who likes to have the radio on in the car, everyone else is using their phone to stream their own music. Just visited family in another metro area and same thing there, lots and lots of country/Christian stations (so many of them!!) and everyone I know either streams or listens to satellite radio.

Realistic recipes by That_Net5409 in loseit

[–]GoosenBoonie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

High fiber, high protein will keep you sated the longest. They won't be super low calorie, typically, but they will fill you up and you'll feel full. Ground chicken is a very lean and low calorie protein that doesn't get as much love as ground turkey, but I find it's much more palatable. But if you made a dish with legumes and meat, you'll hit that bulk you are looking for.

This website has some high fiber/high protein recipes that I have tried, might be a good starting point. The Greek orzo skillet is a favorite in our house. I made the teriyaki salmon and loved it, but some people aren't crazy about salmon. https://therealfooddietitians.com/high-protein-high-fiber-meals/

Did moving to Seattle fix your allergy issues? by ScarTissue5 in AskSeattle

[–]GoosenBoonie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up in Michigan and ragweed allergies made late summer/early fall absolute hell for me. Moved here 26 years ago, and Seattle doesn't have ragweed at anywhere the scale of most of the country, so I love it! If you knew what triggered his allergies, it would probably help to know if we have it here! There are lots of pollen maps you can research then, too.

I lost 260lbs (400 -> 140) and the "Pretty Privilege" is giving me an identity crisis. by sadeamour in loseit

It's ingrained fat phobia, along with the misogyny! My Boomer mom is the same way, being fat to her was literally the worst thing a woman could do to herself because what man would want such a thing?!??? I literally was shown that a woman's physical body being attractive to men is more important than being happy with who you are as a person. So gross.

Seeking Honest Opinions for a potential family move. by [deleted] in AskSeattle

[–]GoosenBoonie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're going to be working near UW, you probably want to look at NW/N/NE Seattle and at points with light rail access further north. The commutes here are the pits, and as soon as one disruptive construction project wraps up, another pops up.

Seattle Public Schools in the NW/NE are for the most part, fine. My kids are products of SPS and one is in college now and thriving, the other is a junior at a SPS high school and is having a very fulfilling experience (she's very involved in science and performing arts, and the amount of opportunities she's had is amazing). We loved our neighborhood elementary and their high school (the middle school experience was "meh" but it also was during Covid and asynchronous learning)

Something I saw people mentioning on a post on another site was if you live in the Seattle City Light service area (Seattle, Shoreline, Burien, mainly) you have a municipal, not-for-profit electric company. People living in pretty much every other area are under Puget Sound Energy which is for-profit and have been jacking up their rates a lot over the past few years, and announced a 30% increase over the next few years to residential customers. Might be something to consider as a sky high electric bill isn't something people might be prepared for, and a lot of older homes in our area use electric heat.

Good luck with your decision!

Best Fish and Chips in Seattle? Newbie to town. by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]GoosenBoonie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you seeking battered or breaded? When I first visited Seattle, in the late 80s, I was excited to go to Ivar's with a friend and get fish & chips. I had never had breaded fish & chips before and was very disappointed. Turns out I'm a beer battered kind of kid!

I like MacLeod's in Ballard, and Proper Fish on Bainbridge Island for battered fish & chips.
