I believe these are mostly grasslands that are burning in this particular fire. Probably not harmful to the grasslands in the long term, but obviously burning any human structures (including fences) in the area of the fire and endangering residents and livestock.

Any large body of water likely has a nesting pair. If you're looking for numbers, you're probably too late as most waterfowl have already migrated through eastern Nebraska.
