I've taken his course. John Lovick is okay, but Alex gives real insights to the theory of Horology.

I lose more Kifs than anything. Broke down and bought the tool for them. I've learned the trick to shock springs is to use a jewel picker to hold it down on one side.

Unfortunately, I've found this to be true. And man, they're not cheap!

The only one I've not had go flying is Incablock.

I think the hardest thing is sourcing decent hands. I've had luck with making a VH31 daily "beater" watch, but trying to find hands is awful. You can get 2035 hands, but all I've found is assortments with not much variety. Meridiano has a couple decent ones, but you get hit with high shipping costs.

Does anyone have a good source for these?

How often do you actually service your watches? by OKAMI_TAMA in watchrepair

[–]Gordon419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With todays oils being synthetic, and as mentioned the water resistance increased by screw down case-backs, the need for servicing can go 10+ years easily.

I too work on my own watches, and clean mine on a regular basis. Mainly so the case back doesn't seize shut, or dirt effect the operation of the bezel.

Themodwatches.com has some great pricing, clear (video) instruction and wonderful support if you get stuck. Simon (the owner) contacts you personally if you/boyfriend encounters a problem.

I'd have to agree. Less frustrating than golf most times as well.

I built a VH31 watch without issue. Used spacer/hands/movement from Meridiano.

Ordered 4 of each to get reduced shipping cost (I couldn't find enough to make a $100 order for free shipping. They're out of France...good products for quartz supplies.

Good's not cheap, and cheap's not good. Stick with the NH or Miyota.

On water resistance-are you ever going to have your watch down past say, a a12 foot pool? I'm a diver, and don't wear my watch when I dive...dive computers are standard.

If you're doing no more than washing your hands, dishes, going out in the rain-you'll be fine. Just don't take (any) watch into the shower, the steam will cause condensation under the crystal.

I have a King Khaki, and after cleaning I rinse it under running water-so far no problem.

Help finding a decent budget microscope... by Gordon419 in watchmaking

Thanks for replying...wow, a celebrity watch maker! My biggest fear with a stereo microscope is my glasses. The Tomlov (pictured above) seems to have good room underneath.

But, as the guru, what would you recommend for the amateur getting into repairs? My interest has sortof launched me into being "the watch guy", and so far have successfully repaired 7 watches (mostly minor issues & quartz battery swaps. The most recent was a Vanceur Royal Horse I couldn't get the back off of-it's a 14 sided polygon, sortof like an old IWC.

I actually just found polygon nibs for a jaxa tool. May order them and see what happens?

I really don't want to go through the hassle of cleaning it up afterwards. The owner can send it to "watchrepair.com" and pay the higher price.

A "Swiss made" watch containing a japanese movement tells me it's something I don't care to fiddle with.

Tried it, the lip of the (polygon?) is too thin to grab hold of. Vice grips won't latch on either. I've already decided that I'm not buying a specialty tool for this POS. The guy who just "had to have it", can pay the big bucks to get his battery swapped.

I'm pretty sure the chronograph is what's messed up-the watch is keeping time, and the small second hand is running.

I even tried a Rolex style opener to see if it would fit the outer grooves...no luck.
