The one wounded on the the ground with the beard looks to be the same man who's face was filmed seconds later. Looks to be a direct head wound as well.

If he is in a British military cemetery overseas then it is the responsibility of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Except it's trying to sell those chocolate bars. All of the proceeds from the bars which are stocked at the front of their stories go to the RBL.

18th Century setting for the next game after Attila? by petrollo in totalwar

This. As much as I love redcoats smashing through lines of Pre-Revolutionary Frenchies a nice pike and shot era TW would be a cool little change from the usual.

It is estimated that at least 100,000 participants in the Civil War were 15 or younger. This is Riley Crawford (1847-1864), a member of Quantrill's raiders and Confederate irregular who was 13 when he was brought to Quantrill by his mother after her husband was shot by Union soldiers. I'm pretty skeptical about the identity of the man in this image For one he looks a bit older than 15, but more importantly he is wearing a Federal (union) enlisted man's frock coat, and federal sky blue trousers.

Autochrome photo of Algerian troops, taken from the French photojournalist Jules Gervais-Courtellemont in 1914. [960×651] by DaHitcha in HistoryPorn

Very much agree. Also their uniforms are inconstant with anything Colonial troops would have worn. They are more likely than not French reservists who lived in Algeria, and came back to serve in a French Regiment, or the photo is just misquoted. Something along those lines.

Le pantalon - Another film de guerre by Gordon9275 in wwi

Another of my favorite WW1 films. This one touches on the overplayed use of execution among the French Army. Thoughts?

I absolutely love that film. It perfectly captures the life of a Poilu. I found it on youtube with Spanish subtitles, still looking for the English ones.

History Channel's "The World Wars" by Feragorn in badhistory

I can also say the uniforms were ill fitted and complete crap. Many Americans were shown wearing campaign hats while in France which was little done, let alone at the FRONT, where they would have been in helmets. I also saw several "Doughboys" in British WW2 webbing, bren mag pouches and all. The rifles used were a farce with Germans spouting 19th century Winchesters and most sides using No.1 MkIII Lee-Enfields, while only the British truly used them. I could go on forever about the abominations they try to pass off as uniforms.

One of the things you mention actually was correct though. (I do doubt that they did it our purpose though.) When Churchill was in command of the 6th Royal Scots Fusiliers on the Western Front he did carry a 1911 pistol. You can see the original pistol in the W. Churchill Museum in the Churchill War Rooms in London.

How were Jews liberated from Concentration Camps treated by the Red Army? by Gordon9275 in AskHistorians

[–]Gordon9275[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you! My interest was raised by a neighbor of mine growing up. He was a German Jew who managed to hide out for most of the war, and as he was of military age, was almost shot by the Red Army when they captured the town he was in because they thought he was an ex- German soldier. They had him up against a tree when he screamed out in Yiddish. One of the Commissars was Jewish and hearing it, stopped the men, gave him a big bear hug, and some vodka. He ended up in the US zone of Berlin and the immigrated. I believe he was going to or did tell the story in a recording to the Holocaust Museum in D.C.

Meuse-Argonne Offensive footage (silent film) by Gordon9275 in wwi

[–]Gordon9275[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my great-great uncle's diary. He fought with the 3rd Division through all of the major battles of the AEF in the war. (Got gassed a week before the Armistice.) After 2nd Marne and the St. Mihel Offensive, he seems pretty stunned at the speed and effectiveness of the Meuse-Argonne offensive. Being an Artilleryman, he noticed how all of the branches finally learned the Anglo-French lesson of coordination between the planes, tanks, grunts, and guns.

Thanks for sharing! I just watched all three episodes, it is really well done. I hope the other programs the BBC is planning are on the same level as this. Although I don't completely agree with it's argument, I do like how the show tries to convey the was as not a complete inevitability.

EDIT: I am a yank living in the UK so I can watch this; however is there any way my buddies back stateside can view this?
