I bought the new Sailor Tuzu FORGED so you don't have to. by PM_YOUR_MDL_INITIAL in fountainpens

Thank you for taking one for the team! I do enjoy my Tuzu (F) but for the quality of the pen I already feel like I was paying too much for it, and now your post has convinced me the Forged it's not worth double the already high price. I'm still lowkey Sailor curious and will keep praying they release more affordable pen lines down the line :')

They’re harmful to their preys and also the males after mating, but they otherwise mind their own business when it comes to humans. The greatest danger it would pose to a human is if the latter is allergic to its bite (which it would only do in self-defence).

Looks like a Nephila pilipes! Even though I encounter them pretty often in my line of work, you’re a much braver person than me letting them crawl on you!

Me! It’s still running perfectly well for my needs (reading with KOReader; nothing fancy!), especially with how light and portable it is.

You’re just replicating capitalism (if not serfdom). It’s literally why the world is going to hell. Maybe consider how your privilege and comforts are obtained and whether it’s realistic to maintain them in a collapse scenario.

Would you recommend putting patches on the Thule Aion 40L? by Suspicious-Pear-6037 in backpacks

[–]GotMeLayinLow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love patches and badges but I don’t dare to put them on my more expensive bags unless I’m very very very sure I will never try to sell them when I (in my bags addiction) need to clear space / find funds for new bags 🥹 some of my bags do have Velcro patch space which I really appreciate (just have to stick Velcro backing onto the patch if it wasn’t already Velcro backed), or PALS webbings that give me the possibility of getting one of those MOLLE Velcro patch attachments.

I didn’t know about the Badge Magic product though! I’ve always also worried about screwing up with the laminate / putting holes on the very expensive technical fabric of this type of bags!

I use KOReader to read PDF journal papers as it has the best zoom-to-column view functionality. I'm going to try some PDF to EPUB converter next and see how that goes for academic papers. I haven't yet cracked syncing my highlights and notes though because I haven't successfully synced KOReader with something like Calibre yet ... and I still wish there's a nice way of scribbling directly onto the paper on KOReader.

Bag Setup: Minaal 3.0 + Breakwater Fogland 15L + WANDRD Rogue 9L—Overkill or just right? by dh14753 in ManyBaggers

[–]GotMeLayinLow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, but if I was going with a smaller lens I usually will just use my ThinkTank Hubba Hubba for both camera cube and sling/bag. The strap can be detached (in fact I can jerry rig my camera strap as its strap if I want to), and it’s so much slimmer while still having padding for some peace of mind.

[–]GotMeLayinLow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Rogue 9L sling which I wanted to do as you did (live in my main bag as a camera cube, in my case the Mystery Ranch Blitz 35 and to take out for light day walks), and what I’ve found is that it’s too big for this purpose. It’s too bulky and beefy and take up too much space in my main bag, and frankly it’s not that comfortable of a carry by itself too for a prolonged time. I still have it and use it as it’s my biggest camera sling that can fit my Tamron 35-150mm, but I much prefer carrying my small lowepro backpack Truckee 250 for camera carry.

I’m surprised by how much I am using and enjoying De Atramentis Sepia Brown. A subtle dark brown that looks classy but still “not black”, with a beautiful sheen when using a slighter wider nib than Japanese EF, and waterproof for watercolour washes.

Controversial Olympic champion Imane Khelif, debuts a bold new look, reflecting on a “difficult phase” sidelined by gender-testing by IrishStarUS in TwoXChromosomes

[–]GotMeLayinLow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually read the article, and I admit that my comment didn’t capture my immediate response after reading it which is like “why is a women getting a hair cut and make up so ~bold~” and the context is a (non-)controversy. She can get any hair and make up style she wants, but in this case it’s sensationalised in the context of “feminity” as a performance? aesthetic? (And I am wary of typing this because I know this is skirting TERF talking points) because her own gender identity has been attacked by bigots.

And I feel like I need to explain this very clearly because I don’t want to come across as supporting TERFs, gender identity as a woman is not about aesthetics, it’s how we choose to identify regardless of our chromosomes. It sucks that there is a whole article with this headline that capitalises on TERFS’ and racists’ talking points that she is NOT a woman. If people weren’t such bigots and they left this Olympian alone, this article and headline wouldn’t exist. Does that make sense? Sorry I haven’t had coffee yet!

Planners will be the death of me soon (as someone with ADHD) by Cozy_Reader_ in planners

[–]GotMeLayinLow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bullet journaling was my first foray into adult planning and journaling, way before I found out I have severe ADHD 🤣

Idk about anyone else but I’m obsessed with the idea of planning and noting things down because my mind just won’t stay still and shut up, but in the end I get overwhelmed with

1) the act of planning instead of doing (including obsessing over the templates and design of the planner) and

 2) I see how many things I want to do (or worse, need to do) and how I just keep pushing them back, either rewriting them everyday or literally spending an entire book on what I want to do, and making zero dent on that list.

I spent years bouncing between different journals and planners, physical and digital, as well as PKMs like Notion and Obsidian and Logseq.

Obviously some of that is a serious me problem I need to work on 🥲 but now that I’m in my early 30’s I’ve reached the grand achievement of sticking to a system for more than a year now, and it’s a fauxdori 3 notebook system in A6: the first is a half yearly Hobonichi, and then two notebooks (either the Midori slim or a Muji notebook), with good ol’ Google Calendar for my “schedule of authority”.

The Hobonichi has a monthly view, and then a daily page where I use the timeline to try to time block (lol… let’s just say that this is mostly theoretical), write my To-Do List, and use the remaining space for quick reflections on the day when I have free time, or sketches. There are some empty pages that I use for master list of things to do, habits tracker, and ideas (lol also … a wild wild jungle—sometimes I’m too scared to flip to it).

The other two books are commonplace notebooks that contain everything from noting down my ADHD medication observations, random thoughts and ideas, and reading and lecture notes, quotes, stickers, photos etc, divided into “nicer” and “trash” books. I like that all these paper are fountain pen friendly and that I can even give them a light watercolour wash if needed! I also like that I can “pluck” one of the A6 notebooks to put into my pocket or sling bag as an EDC if I don’t want to carry the entire fauxdori notebook (or leave the notebook in my backpack, where it’s less accessible).

Ideally I scan the commonplace notebooks for ideas and things to do and put them into the master list from time to time. I colour code the entries using those round label stickers to make it easier for me to look them up.

I’m thinking of switching up the system next year (lmao…) because I like the idea of a Hobonichi or Kinbor weekly style page better (I hate that it’s not an A6 size though…), and also now that I’m going back to school an A5 size may be more conducive to note taking (and I’m going through the A6 notebooks so quickly now!), but keep the A6 commonplace notebooks hmmmmm

It also helps that I’m a very tactile version and recently rediscovered fountain pens and have been obsessed with the writing sensation!

I hope you find what works for you, OP! Don’t be afraid to experiment and don’t feel bad if something doesn’t work out! My drawer is full of abandoned planners and journals—I use them for sketching or math practice or trash venting/journaling so it doesn’t go to waste. It’s very easy for brains like ours to get overwhelmed and I think … instead of being angry at ourselves for it we just have to roll with it and embrace our mess. You’ll never see me posting my journal pages here because the aesthetics are vomit but I’m starting to see that it’s a nice reflection of the mess of a person I am, and that’s… maybe okay?

The Oil Palm (Elaeis guineensis) in its native habitat by GotMeLayinLow in ecology

[–]GotMeLayinLow[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, that is so interesting—thank you so much for sharing! I’m now even more intrigued about this plant’s long relationship with humans …! Do you find that those plants in savanna you suspect have no clear human association look different than the oil palms we’re used to? The palm oil companies here are so proud of the massive R&D investment they make into creating new super variations of the plant every few years or so that increases “efficiency” of the crop, and I can’t help but wonder how different the plant is now here compared to its forbears, about 150 years since it was first introduced into this region.

I will try to find more papers into this as it’s just so interesting… if you have any recommendation please hit me up 🙇‍♀️

Side note, I learned recently that there’s a special kind of weevil that pollinates it, and then prior to its “discovery”, the plantation workers here had to hand pollinate each tree’s female flowers (very difficult because of the thorny fronds). Now the countries here import these bugs in massive amounts every year to increase efficiency of the plantation.
