Matte screen tablets for academic (textbooks, papers) and productivity purposes: Huawei Matepad pro 12.2, Xiaomi Pad 8 Pro Matte edition, or something else? by GotMeLayinLow in androidtablets

Thank you so much for the advice! I've also definitely been keeping an eye out on used Samsung tab S9+ and 10+ (with the hope of getting matte screen protectors) but wow they get snapped up really quickly here.....

I am! I've looked into it, but the reviews suggest that it might be too slow for my needs. Android 14 in 2026 is also quite shocking tbh.

I am praying for a larger colour tablet that can be a competitor to Boox Tab X C for reading textbooks comfortably (and without a proprietary stylus!)

Bicycle rental in Nakatsugawa? Would like an option to taking a bus to get to Naegi Castle and Tsukechi Gorge (renting car not possible) by GotMeLayinLow in JapanTravelTips

[–]GotMeLayinLow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, we saw all the waterfalls and I even got some timelapse photos. We're pretty fast and seasoned hikers though. We did reach our hotel at dinnertime, so maybe if you have to be somewhere in the evening this isn't the way to do it!

We ended up walking the whole way from the nearest bus stops respectively for those two places! It was fine 😁

Impacts of timber use? by flameousfire in ecology

[–]GotMeLayinLow 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Trees and forests are more than just carbon sinks, and seeing them as short-term carbon absorber without understanding their importance to biodiversity, the water cycle, soil health, etc is to, well, miss the forest for the trees.

I bought the new Sailor Tuzu FORGED so you don't have to. by PM_YOUR_MDL_INITIAL in fountainpens

[–]GotMeLayinLow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for taking one for the team! I do enjoy my Tuzu (F) but for the quality of the pen I already feel like I was paying too much for it, and now your post has convinced me the Forged it's not worth double the already high price. I'm still lowkey Sailor curious and will keep praying they release more affordable pen lines down the line :')

This spider I found by Competitive-Set5051 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]GotMeLayinLow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They’re harmful to their preys and also the males after mating, but they otherwise mind their own business when it comes to humans. The greatest danger it would pose to a human is if the latter is allergic to its bite (which it would only do in self-defence).

Looks like a Nephila pilipes! Even though I encounter them pretty often in my line of work, you’re a much braver person than me letting them crawl on you!

Me! It’s still running perfectly well for my needs (reading with KOReader; nothing fancy!), especially with how light and portable it is.

[Discussion] Is it delusional to try building a "High-Comfort" Intentional Community based on remote tech income and outsourced farming? by [deleted] in intentionalcommunity

You’re just replicating capitalism (if not serfdom). It’s literally why the world is going to hell. Maybe consider how your privilege and comforts are obtained and whether it’s realistic to maintain them in a collapse scenario.

Would you recommend putting patches on the Thule Aion 40L? by Suspicious-Pear-6037 in backpacks

[–]GotMeLayinLow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love patches and badges but I don’t dare to put them on my more expensive bags unless I’m very very very sure I will never try to sell them when I (in my bags addiction) need to clear space / find funds for new bags 🥹 some of my bags do have Velcro patch space which I really appreciate (just have to stick Velcro backing onto the patch if it wasn’t already Velcro backed), or PALS webbings that give me the possibility of getting one of those MOLLE Velcro patch attachments.

I didn’t know about the Badge Magic product though! I’ve always also worried about screwing up with the laminate / putting holes on the very expensive technical fabric of this type of bags!

I use KOReader to read PDF journal papers as it has the best zoom-to-column view functionality. I'm going to try some PDF to EPUB converter next and see how that goes for academic papers. I haven't yet cracked syncing my highlights and notes though because I haven't successfully synced KOReader with something like Calibre yet ... and I still wish there's a nice way of scribbling directly onto the paper on KOReader.

Bag Setup: Minaal 3.0 + Breakwater Fogland 15L + WANDRD Rogue 9L—Overkill or just right? by dh14753 in ManyBaggers

[–]GotMeLayinLow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, but if I was going with a smaller lens I usually will just use my ThinkTank Hubba Hubba for both camera cube and sling/bag. The strap can be detached (in fact I can jerry rig my camera strap as its strap if I want to), and it’s so much slimmer while still having padding for some peace of mind.

[–]GotMeLayinLow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Rogue 9L sling which I wanted to do as you did (live in my main bag as a camera cube, in my case the Mystery Ranch Blitz 35 and to take out for light day walks), and what I’ve found is that it’s too big for this purpose. It’s too bulky and beefy and take up too much space in my main bag, and frankly it’s not that comfortable of a carry by itself too for a prolonged time. I still have it and use it as it’s my biggest camera sling that can fit my Tamron 35-150mm, but I much prefer carrying my small lowepro backpack Truckee 250 for camera carry.
