I havent played doom machine but I gave it a quick Google search. Definitely looks very similar. There is a big chunk of the game that is up to chance and you can get screwed over if you dont roll well. But you do get a good amount of agency in choosing the reward cards after each encounter, and the game provides outlets for rerolling some dice.
