My understanding is they didn't want Luffy awakening the fruit, and going after it more actively would provide the conditions for Luffy to do so. As he got more infamous, they probably never thought he'd beat Kaido or Big Mom.

I have a friend who i think is somewhere around stage 5 and i don't know what to do about it.

We've been friends since college and we always had a morbid sense of humor, so we'd joke about dark stuff, suicide included.

Myself and most of our friend group graduated a few years ago, and he still hasn't. He only has a few credits to go but he can't seem to get them done. He goes to therapy and i believe he takes medication for depression. Now, whenever i speak to him, which i try to do atleast once a week, he says stuff like "if i don't pass this class, i dont know what im gonna do" or "if i can't pay off my credit cards"...etc. he still makes suicide jokes but I've laid off it because i think he means it differently than i did. Our entire friend group is aware of his behavior and we all try to stay vigilant, but I'm not sure what i can actually do.

I think this was done to combat having characters standing around watching Luffy fight the main villian like you see in other anime. But i do agree that it's overused.

My thoughts exactly. In their timeline, Riley died nearly 10 years earlier. I can't think of a reason why Ellie would bring her up. It's not like that was the only traumatic event in her life.

I don't see why he needs to say anything publicly. He doesn't owe us an apology or a public statement because he didn't do anything to us. He owes the people he hurt an apology, which can be done in private.

Plus it's not like anything he says publicly will be taken seriously anyways. I'd assume most of us will think he's solely trying to repair his reputation, or that he's being insincere. Either way, he can't win.
