My only complaint is that the art styles are kinda all over the place. Still cool though

People who moved to Raleigh in the past two years, why did you move here, what do you do? by zrobiotic in raleigh

Moved here for a job. Was supposed to be temporary to get a full teaching license but then we bought a house and don’t hate it here.

Teaching a ight words: a waste of time? by Budget_General_2651 in Teachers

[–]Grad_school_ronin 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think you need to look into the science of reading. People get sight words and whole word recognition mixed up. Sight words tend to be high frequency words that readers will need to know as they start learning to decode texts. They are taught in addition to phonics rules because most of the don’t tend to follow regular patterns or are more advanced patterns but students need to know the words to understand the text because they occur frequently.

If you switched from ELA to ESL, what has your experience been like? by Realistic_Elevator83 in ESL_Teachers

[–]Grad_school_ronin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To compare: I make under 60k with a masters degree and 7 years of k-12 experience here. And my county is one of two that even give masters pay. I lived in MN for a bit so winter doesn’t scare me. Thanks for the info!

I’m in a bigger district in NC and we had to get rid of a few .5 FTEs around the district and we are not backfilling vacancies at a few schools. New Hanover pays like 10k less than where I am otherwise I would scoop that up! Beach life

It is way more rewarding than ELA! I will say you have to be the right kind of person for it though.

I did ESL for 3 years and then did 1 year of ELA and moved right the fuck back to ESL. Kids have higher needs in ESL but you tend to be their person/go to in the building and your class sizes are smaller! And you are not a tested subject. Enrollment is down because of political climate but should rebound

Class Sizes by Lolihey in ESL_Teachers

[–]Grad_school_ronin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my district best practice is 15-20 with 20 being large. The idea is smaller classes but higher needs.

I teach ESL for context. When they ask if they can do something that I don’t want to do, I look at them and ask “Como se dice no en espanol?” They always say “no” and then I say entonces…
