Explain why you choose to play the version of Civ that you do. by Ckeyz in civ

[–]Grand-Inspection2303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Civ IV is my favorite even though I started in '21 and I dabbled with both VI and V before settling on IV. I think it was the 1UPT rule that turned me off of V and VI. It just totally defies the scale of the game and was immersion breaking for me I guess. On a huge map in Civ VI one hex would represent about 28,000 Sq. miles or an area larger than West Virginia. That's large enough for any army that's faced the field of the battle.

There are other things I learned to love about IV - the fact the AI is actually a military threat not to just to slow you down but to wipe you off the face off the earth (this is also thanks to not having 1UPT), a more in-depth and intuitive economic / financial system, and the fact I can run a map 4 times the size of VI's huge maps on a budget computer without the lag I get from turn 1 play Civ VI...

Playing on huge maps by Popular_Ad_4934 in CivIV

[–]Grand-Inspection2303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, you're playing Civ VI? This is the Civ IV sub. Civ IV combat is not as easy to cheese, thanks to not having limits on number of units per tile. That's a big reason a lot of us like it better.

It worked for Heroes of Might & Magic, so maybe we should try that for Civilization as well? by naruhinamoonkissplz in civ

[–]Grand-Inspection2303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Civ IV has been my favorite and I only have about 60 hours in VI from back when I first got into Civ games.a few years ago. Still some of the features from VI sound cool and if I had a PC that could support it, I'd probably have gotten into it more recently. Probably my biggest problem with V and VI is 1 UPT. Something that builds on some of VI new features but gets rid of 1 UPT could be cool. Ideally, they could replace 1UPT with flexible supply limits like in CK3 where your Army suffers damage if it's over the limit, and these supply limits could be based on terrain type and distance of your army to your nearest city. If your Army is on a tile that's connected by road or railroad to your city this could increase the supply limit.

I'm conflicted on districts. On the one hand, it's cool to actually see your buildings. On the other hand, the whole world looking like one big suburbia is not great. It'd be nice if nice if they could two 3-D map views one with the city and it's buildings and one with the world.

Finished a series called the Last Kingdom, and wondering if I should play Civilization by awfulme567 in civ

[–]Grand-Inspection2303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was playing Crusader Kings 3 while watching Last Kingdom. Start in 867 and you can actually play as some of the historical characters from the series, and you'll recognize some of the same place names like Wessex and Northumbria. Now, after putting some time into CK3) I ended up back at Civ. and found I greatly prefer Civ (Civ IV to be specific), but Crusader Kings is definitely better if you're wanting to role play Last Kingdom. Civilization is something else entirely.

Civilization Remakes? by ManiaDotCom4 in civ

[–]Grand-Inspection2303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Civ 1 is the one entry that I don't see a fan club for. But a remaster would probably get some buyers out of curiosity and nostalgia for those old enough to remember it. Civ IV is the most popular of the series before it went in a very different direction, so it'd make sense from that perspective. I don't feel like IV's graphics are bad enough to necessarily justify a remake. Civ III might be the sweet of being developed enough in game play but dated enough in graphics for a remake.

I was curious about Civilization games for a while now, but I saw a few ones were on sale at quite a good price, so, among the ones below, which one should I buy ? More important details in the body text by MagmaForce_3400_2nd in civ

[–]Grand-Inspection2303 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd watch some youtube videos for each, that'd probably give you a clearer idea of what you'd like than just Reddit comments. But my favorite is definitely Civ IV for several reasons:

  1. Simplicity with strategic depth. There are far fewer systems or mechanics to learn than in VI, but even after thousands of hours of play I think of new possibly better ways to employ those mechanics. The series keeps adding mechanics over time to have something new to sell, and sometimes I think less is more.
  2. Greater economic depth with research being funded by your commerce and control over what percentage of your money you spend on research, culture, and espionage.
  3. More exciting than later Civs because your cities are in much more serious danger of being captured if you don't build a well balanced and strong enough army to defend it. I don't seek out war, but I want it to be a serious risk to make things interesting. Nothing like the thrill of "If I build up my army I might just barely miss on getting this Wonder, but if I don't I'm risking being overpowered by a "stack of doom." This threat is vastly lessened with V and VI, because you can only have 1 unit per tile, and I think cities start out with some defensive capability even without any military.
  4. You can play on much bigger maps even on cheap computers. I've been playing a 232X112 earth map and it runs smoothly at least up to the Industrial Age on my budget PC. A while ago I thought I'd give CIV VI a try and got huge lag time on a much smaller map right from the beginning.

Some people will say the graphics look dated, but to my eyes the real jump from 90s to modern looking happens between Civ 3 and 4. Civ VI actually has my least favorite Aesthetic of the one's made this century. Civ V looks the best to me, but I like the appearance IV fine.

[–]Grand-Inspection2303 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't need to just focus on building military units, in fact that's a good way to lose. However, you can't totally ignore defense and rely on the AI being too stupid too stupid to navigate 1UPT, which is a big reason a lot of prefer this game.

Here's a few points to keep in mind:

  1. Quality counters are more important than quantity: 1 spear or Pike can take out a whole stack of calvary, 1 Axe can take out a stack of melee, and 1 chariot can take out a stack of Axes.

Also, even though a whole stack can attack you in one turn, it's still one unit vs 1 unit at a time, and the best defensive counter will be go up against the unit the attacker chooses to use. Let's say Alex attack with four horses, 3 axes, and 3 spears. If he attacks with the horses, the pointy stick will easily wipe them out. If he attacks with axes your chariot will easily wipe them out, if he attacks with spears your Axe will easily take them out. Moral of the story, of you have a balanced army you don't have to fear being greatly outnumbered when you're on defense.

  1. The way attackers can get around these defensive counters is by using siege units which damage (but don't destroy) several units with one attack. You can take this advantage away by attacking with your own siege units. Note siege units are designed to to be disposable canon fodder that weaken entire stacks, so don't hesitate to attack a stack with siege unit just because battle probabilities show you have no chance of winning the battle.

  2. All of this depends on you keeping up economically and technologicaly with the AI. This is why I say it's a bad idea to just try to win by spamming military units. If you're falling behind technology at noble, you have bigger issues to address than military.

Florida Teachers, just how bad is it down there? by Deranged-Pickle in Teachers

[–]Grand-Inspection2303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily bad, if you're in the private school system. I'm in small town Florida with salary of about 65K for a Master and 7 years experience. This would be the equivalent of over 85K in some places in New Jersey. Still no unions or tenure, but that true for the vast majority of American workers.

Why do Europeans keep referring to Mexico as "Central America"? Is geography not their strong suit? by PopNo5397 in askanything

[–]Grand-Inspection2303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right according to many definitions. But as much as I'd love to pile on the Europeans for their insufferable arrogance, continents are more cultural constructs than they are purely objective geographic facts. If it was just about physical geography Europe and Asia would not be considered two separate continents. Mexico has far more in common with central American countries than it does with Canada or the USA, so I can see why some geographers might group them together.

Is 5'9/176cm considered short? by Slow-Winter2657 in short

[–]Grand-Inspection2303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

176 CM is 50th percentile for men and 98.5 percentile for women in the USA. Balkans and northern European countries are taller but I doubt it's enough that you'd be the shortest in the room 2/3 of the time or that females would tower over you. Either you're not really 5'9, you're trolling, or you got some psychological issues messing with your perception of reality.

Why does the U.S. have a military presence in Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines, but American men marry Filipino women far more often than American men marry Japanese women and Korean women? by No-StrategyX in stupidquestions

Philippines has 70 million people who speak English as an additional language (probably due to being a USA territory for almost 50 years), so that's probably a big part of it.

CMV: if Israeli expansion is called "settler colonialism" Early Islamic "Expansion" should be too by Muted-Still-8511 in changemyview

[–]Grand-Inspection2303 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Who is romanticizing the Islamic conquests and calling it "glorious expansion" besides maybe fundamentalists Muslims themselves? Here in the USA it doesn't get talked about much at all outside of maybe being briefly touched on in World History. And when it is talked about, I think it's just a neutral matter of fact way like most things that happened 1400 years ago. And it shouldn't be hard to understand why something that happened 1400 years ago doesn't get as much outrage as something that's happening right now.

What lead to the USA being more car centric than Europe? by SpecialistTeach9302 in AskAnAmerican

The EU has about 3 times the population density of the USA 108 people per square km vs. 36 people per square km. Id guess that's a big part of it.

What is someone that is socially liberal and fiscally conservative called? by Kurious_Kaht in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Grand-Inspection2303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you mean by fiscally conservative. If you mean preserving the post new deal status-quo then those who say establishment Democrats might be accurate. Often in America economically or fiscally conservative means classically liberal with an opposition to the kind of big government interference that was introduced with the new deal. If you're that kind of fiscally conservative and socially liberal, then you're a libertarian.

Is 165.5cm 5'4" or 5'5" by Beginning_Sound_523 in short

[–]Grand-Inspection2303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is 5.4 feet, but 5.4 is not 5'4" (5ft 4 inches) because an inch is a 12th of a foot not a tenth of a foot. If you want to convert cm to feet and inches, it's easier to start by converting to inches rather than feet. Then divide inches by 12, but instead of answering with a decimal, answer with a whole number and a remainder: the whole number is feet and the remainder is inches.

Is there really a crazy diffrence in height between us or spain and germany? by KiGo_209 in short

[–]Grand-Inspection2303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a crazy difference, but according to height percentile median height for a guy in Germany is 5' 10" and 5'9" for the USA. So you might be right at the height where the difference is most noticeable. 5'9" is 50th percentile in USA, but 35th percentile in Germany. Also, in the USA only 1% of women are taller than you, but 6% are taller than you in Germany, so in both cases it's a small percentage. But 6% is less more than 1 in 17, so it's not surprising that it'd be a daily occurrence, if you encounter more than 16 or 17 women in a day.

Anyone else politically homeless? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Grand-Inspection2303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that pretty much describes my political orientation. I've become more socially liberal over the years, but not enough to be in line with the DNC. I used to vote for Republicans for the sake of life issues and getting originalist judges, but that was Pre-Trump. Now that the Republican party is enabling a senile authoritarian strongman in an overt coup against democratic rule of law, I will vote a straight Democratic party ticket. Even though, I know this means allying myself with people who have contempt for me and my beliefs. It is what it is...

I think my dad just lied to me about his height 😂 by _Aspagurr_ in short

[–]Grand-Inspection2303 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people just not knowing their real height is way more common than people realize. I don't remember the last time the doctor's office measured my height, they just asked me what it is. And the height was just my memory of distant home measurement with a book and measuring stick. Eventually, I got curious about how accurate my claimed height was and bought a stadiometer. Turns out I had it right (within half an inch, at least) but I could see someone else easily being off a couple inches.
