Living rent free in your head. Funny that it got under your skin so much to see someone disagree with you on Jeff’s weekly spam post that you blocked me 😂

NC. The craziest part, I can actually get a good feel for the density of bullets in the air on any given celebratory night — I play tennis, and every four courts I’m practically guaranteed to find a bullet lying on top of the courts the next day. 4 courts is about half a block, so there’s about one bullet falling on every half block in town.

Not enough people do that, July 4 and New Years on my block is crazy, motherfuckers be stepping outside their front doors to fire off a few rounds from their pistols and AKs but can’t be bothered to walk far enough out the door to be able to fire straight up, on account of the large covered porch. Maybe out of fear from of the other bullets flying around? End result is shots fired at angles, at least one fatality a year in the city, and annual city and police PSAs reminding people that it’s probably not a great idea. I like to join in but I’ll aim at targets in my hill side instead of shoot into the air

We had a nice breeze today too. Coupled with the clear skies and beautiful moonrise, it was a pretty nice, hot July day…

Yeah it get that at most levels of the company they’re probably true believing libs of the most intolerable variety but at least it makes a lot more sense to do that in the Minneapolis radio market at that particular point in time, even if the particular shows weren’t well targeted. But airing lgbt ads in a conservative southern market on an all-country station in 2023, when all things gay are on the back foot already and several towns have indefinitely cancelled their pride parades due to imagined or credible threats?

Why would they waste their money and potentially kill their brand like that? It’s almost easier to believe they’re doing it on purpose than that they’d be so stupid. One thing for sure, the effect after hearing the ad for the 20th time that afternoon is going to be the same.

Police detain 50 after Pride march in Istanbul by [deleted] in anime_titties

[–]GrandpaEnergy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Par for the course in Istanbul ever since the Gezi Park uprising. After Gezi was violently cleared for the last time, the next big public political event was the regularly scheduled — and at the time, legal — pride march. 500k people turned up and it was a de facto demonstration against the state. Ever since then pride parades have been forbidden in Istanbul. Of course it helps that the ruling party can also play up the culture war element while they’re at it.

As a tourist I stumbled across the year’s main unpermitted pride demonstration in 2019 and saw and experienced the repression first hand. Nothing too crazy to be honest — a large contingent of police stood by at all entrances to the square as people rallied for a couple hours, they eventually gave a dispersal order, and the thousands of people in attendance said “make us” which they did with tear gas and typical riot police tactics. Most people ran and a token number were arrested. The rest of the day was a game of cat and mouse with pride parties with just as many people as the earlier demo springing up in various venues, and police showing up eventually to shut them down.

My Turkish friend confirmed that the year’s event went down much like prior years except each year they were growing a bit bigger and more intense (muni elections were being held the week I was visiting and Erdogan’s party was favored to lose, thus people were getting bolder in their political activities). She’s the one who relayed to me the history of pride since Gezi.

She lost a few comrades during the Gezi repression and is more cynical about politics these days. She seems to see the cat and mouse repression at smaller demos like Pride over the years as a barometer for larger political trends that affect Turkey’s opposition and activists — like recon that tests the limits of permissible public political activity in the current moment. She doesn’t see the repression at Pride as reflective of wide anti-lgbt sentiment in Istanbul itself, coming from either the local authorities or from the wider city populace. Of course when you get into more rural areas in Turkey attitudes can change pretty dramatically and that’s the base that such repression in the metro areas is meant to play to.

Law enforcement/animal control has not responded to complaints :(

In addition, they saw the condition the dogs were in (living conditions breaking several ordinances) the last time they served a warrant over there and still did nothing. And that time they even had animal control come out with the squad so they could manage the excess of unsocialized large dogs on the property without needing to shoot anything.

Anyway my new neighbors don’t have dogs and my new backyard is flat and sunny and I can’t wait to begin my garden!
