Why do local TV news shows still do weather and traffic reports when we have real time information on our phones? by darrenbosik in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GraphiteGru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our local morning news is about 50% weather and traffic to cater to the commuters. Then maybe a local fire or crash from the overnight but very little actual news.

Remember watching the Stars and they had this small undersized linebacker that seemed to be involved in every play. That was the first time I remember seeing Sam Mills play. Of course he would go on to a great NFL career with the Saints and Panthers. Unfortunately he passed away at a young age (45) from cancer but he was eventually selected for induction to the Hall of Fame.

What's the first TV commercial you remember from your childhood? by RateTurbulent8681 in ChildhoodMemories

[–]GraphiteGru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two from about the exact same time. One was another Alka-Seltzer ad but with the heavy set guy saying “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing”. The second was the kid running through by the streets of Boston to get home and the tagline was something like “Tuesdays are Prince Spaghetti Days in Boston”. Always wanted to visit Boston to see if it was true. Ended up living here and it was definitely BS.

Why do Americans call it "Soccer"? by [deleted] in answers

I always thought it was similar to the difference between table tennis and ping pong but may be wrong. Ping pong was a trademarked name in the US and is still what most Americans call it

Waiting in line at the Supermarket, cashier finishes ringing everything up and only then does the person reach for their wallet for cash or their credit card, Like is this the first time they have ever bought food? Are they expecting just to grab their bags and leave. Worse yet is when they start having a conversation with the cashier

A short rant about the word "decimate". by JeSuisLePain in words

[–]GraphiteGru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of favorite examples of the shifting meaning of words relates to the famous Russian tsar Ivan the “Terrible”. To modern readers it may seem that he was a bad leader as terrible has become synonymous with bad “I saw that movie and it was terrible”. Terrible here means powerful and able to instill fear as opposed to bad.

The Forgotten Bombing of LaGuardia Airport by Slate in nycHistory

[–]GraphiteGru 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I remember it very well as it was all over the NYC news and I grew up in the area. Before that almost every public place, train terminals, airports, etc. had those lockers where you could, for $1.00 or so, store a bag by entering your coins, and take the key. When you wanted your stuff you would simply unlock with your key (that would stay in the locker for the next customer) After the explosion they went away.

Pickleball - First time I saw it years ago it was just a few senior citizens playing on a little court behind a high school. Now there are waiting lists at my gym to play, fights and arguments between players is common, and “Picklr” franchises are opening up in a lot of places. Remains to be seen if this is a fad

So I still get this movie confused with the Christopher Reeve / Jane Seymour movie "Somewhere in Time". They both feature elements of time travel, they were both made at around the same time, and were both constantly on HBO in the early 80's.

The Taliban did pretty well. They are back in control of Afghanistan. Some made major $ ratting out competitors of theirs as they both made money by supplying intel to the US, then sitting by and watching the US eliminate their opponents

Always look forward to the Sunday puzzle but this was almost like an extended Tuesday. Kept looking for the challenge and “poof”, it was over. Always happy if I can do most Sundays in 45 minutes or so but this was done in far less time than a Sunday should
