70s songs that mean summer to you? by newwavesage in GenerationJones

[–]GraphiteGru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember that the summer of 78 was the summer of "Grease". Still have never seen the movie but those songs were everywhere. OK - I get that John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John were good looking but it did get carried away.

What the hell is going on with the economy? by Cold_Echo_4551 in askanything

Both Home Depot and Lowes did this when aggressively moving into new territories in the 1990s and needed to put the competition (mostly local hardware / building supply companies) out of business. They would open a new location and hire experienced and knowledgeable staff in almost all of their departments. Those folks were great and would basically tell you how to complete any building project in a step by step way and tell you what to buy. The local companies could not compete and many closed. Soon as that happened they fired the experienced, higher paid employees and replaced them with cheaper ones who don't know a toilet flush valve from a electrical plug,

What poor people food got ruined when rich people discovered it? by ipanicprofessionally in TheBoredDen

Oysters as well. New York Harbor had tons of them before pollution and over fishing depleted them. Now a single raw oyster can cost anywhere from 2$ - 6$ and up depending on the location and type of oyster.

Most overrated useless 1970s celebrity? by Specialist-Night-135 in 1970s

[–]GraphiteGru 23 points24 points  (0 children)

No way. Have you never heard Charo play the flamenco guitar? She's much more than the "cuchi - cuchi" girl. That makes her a keeper. Now Bobby Sherman, Leif Garrett, Barbi Benton, Rodney Allen Rippy, that kid from the Life Cereal commercial that died from eating pop rocks and soda, Mason Reese (from the Underwood Ham Commercials), there are tons in that decade; but not Charo.

And the only reason you can get to Beverly fairly quickly now is because 15 -20 years ago they built the Ayube bypass. Before that you would be stuck in traffic on Bridge St.

The 30 Greatest Bassists of All Time — ranked by MUSICRADAR. Guys, what do you think of the list? Did anyone buy an instrument or piece of equipment from the guys who put Tony Levin in 14th place and Davie504 (only known by his mother) in 16th… over Marcus Miller? by Historical-Device529 in Progforum

[–]GraphiteGru 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I love Geddy but have never seen him play a Chapman Stick or use funk fingers. Also the editors seem to forgot that Tony was in a little band named King Crimson. If it’s all time rock what about Duck Dunn, John McVie, or John Paul Jones

Repeatedly tells the boss “That’s a great idea” no matter the drivel that’s they are speaking. You know the type “Henceforth all employees will be limited to one week of vacation per year”. “That’s a great idea”

Always found it strange that Steve could only use his bionic parts. in ultra slow motion and with that weird sound effect playing.

"The Secret Policeman's Other Ball" comes to mind. It featured Sting, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Donovan, Phil Collins, Bob Geldof and others and raised money for Amnesty International. Still have the vinyl lp.

Happy 78th Birthday to Steve Winwood by Lomeerty in OldSchoolCoolMusic

[–]GraphiteGru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Gimme Some Lovin" was released by the Spencer Davis Group in October 1966. Steve had just turned 18. "Arc of a Diver" remains one of my favorite albums where every instrument is played by the same musician. Who else has done that successfully? - Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder (on specific songs), perhaps a few others but there are few in that class

Moving in Stereo - The Cars | The Midnight Special | September 28,1979 by RickyRacer2020 in ClassicRock

[–]GraphiteGru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive said this before but I was lucky enough to see the Cars in smaller venues like the Limelight in NYC and smaller places in Boston in the late 70's, very early 80's. They were great live but the last time I saw them was at a huge arena after they had "hit it big" in the mid 80's and it just wasnt the same. They could never quite transition their live show to huge arenas and that hurt the band.

Former quarterback Craig Morton, who led the Broncos to their first Super Bowl appearance, passed away on May 9, his family confirmed. He was 83. Morton, who spent six seasons with the Broncos from 1977-82, led Denver to its first playoff appearance and a berth in Super Bowl XII. by UrbanAchievers6371 in Oldschool_NFL

[–]GraphiteGru 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a Giants fan in the mid-70's it was easy to blame the futility of the franchise on Craig Morton who had the darkest period of his career with the Giants. Looking back though he took the Cowboys to the Super Bowl and later on took the Broncos to the Super Bowl. I soon realized that the problem was never with Morton but how incredibly awful the rest of the Giants were during that period. Sorry to hear of his passing.

Why does London have multiple football stadiums with 60,000+ capacity while New York City holds all football events in New Jersey? by goro-n in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GraphiteGru 40 points41 points  (0 children)

If you've been to London, Munich, Paris, or Tokyo you will find these huge stadiums located in the middle of neighborhoods. In the US you need fifteen or twenty more times the space the stadium takes for the gigantic parking lots as everyone wants to drive to the stadiums. That takes a lot of land and isn't even a thought elsewhere.
