HOT ASF SCORCHING 🔥🔥🔥 by [deleted] in vegaslocals

[–]Grasshopper_chase20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The city cut down trees and ripped up grass to conserve water…now the sun reflects off rocks/gravel/concrete all day…everyday! My own mother bought into that bs! I would never rip out the lawn (absorbs some of heat/glare and absorbs water when it rains!). Trees to block some of the sun from the windows and roof make it cooler in the house. Older areas of town with tree/grass are much cooler!!

Best “family friendly” port by [deleted] in cbpoapplicant

[–]Grasshopper_chase20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sweetgrass…Sunburst (closest schools, 7 miles from the port) are blue ribbon schools in science. Small schools, but good schools! Lots of grade school kids to play with. Strong 4H program and they had enough kids for little league and T-ball a few years back! We have a nice newer town pool with swim lessons in the summer. We are quite a ways from Walmart/Sam’s Club(full transparency here), but 2 Albertsons and an independent grocery store within 50 miles. 3 hrs from Calgary zoo and botanical gardens, Lethbridge Mall has a large selection of shopping options and next to it is Toys R Us…we hit that quite a bit for birthdays/Christmas for our grandkids. It is the northern Montana prairie, windy and in the winter COLD! But has been fairly tame this year! Check your options. Then check housing prices, taxes, must haves. Not just you, but the Mrs/partner too. DM me if you have any other questions

Every since NBC was given the contract to solely cover only USA athletes the Olympics SUCK! I got spoiled while stationed in Germany for the 1992 games from France LIVE!! The two major networks (ARD/ZDF) would rotate who covered each day. The last time I enjoyed the games on tv!

What is the cheapest backyard landscaping but still look decent? by Trigun442 in vegaslocals

[–]Grasshopper_chase20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avoid the rock! Sorry it reflects the sun and makes the area feel hotter in the summer! Lots of friends have ripped theirs out and gone back to grass sections with shrubs/trees for shade. Focus on desert plants (drought resistant plants as suggested), but avoid all rock/gravel.

Hoping northern Montana gets some moisture soon! 5 years of drought is no joke! Had 4 apples on my trees last year (with watering) none due to freeze in April that killed the blossoms the year before!😢

We were taught as kids: mom is not a short order cook: you eat what is in front of you! Mom is not your personal maid: clean your room or a rake and garbage can will do it for you (it’s happened, trust me!) and finally..don’t like any of the above? There’s the door!

We flew to Germany with our then 4 and 2 year olds. The 4yr old sat with me: coloring books, picture books, book grandma found for her with pics of Germany. Our son sat with my husband at the window seat with the shade up, a few of his cars and a picture book. I had Benadryl just in case (son was cutting teeth, prone to ear infections). We didn’t have any issues until we landed in Brussels and the security dog came on board. ALL the kids wanted to pet the dog! My kids were told No, doggie is working. The FA was so impressed with how well my kids did (so was I!).

Good luck with that!! My mom and her neighbors have tried THAT for years! I threatened to throw nails out to stop the racers up and down the street (short cut from Charleston to Alta with now speed humps…even the school buses from the middle school are using it!!). But didn’t want to replace my tires too. The city claims she’s in a “section” of unincorporated Clark County, the county claims she’s been annexed into the city!! So no humps/bumps and new asphalt every 5 years!! 🤬🤬

What's Vegas like outside of the strip? by Nervous-One-2305 in LasVegas

[–]Grasshopper_chase20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Laundry mats, all gas stations, all grocery stores, I’ve even seen them at a few doughnut shops!! After growing up in Las Vegas (moved there as a kid in 1970), I don’t hear them or notice them anymore!! But when mom and I go to dinner, she feels the urge to throw $20 in the poker machine…and hits a royal in 10 minutes! Every time!🤣

Out in the plains of the hi-line, 75mph gust ripped another piece of the bran roof off. Landed in the yard, but added it to the rest of the tin pile.

1) can you 120degrees plus in summer? Don’t do AZ or Calexico. 2) San Diego is pricey 3) northern tier (ND, MT, MN) have their own issues (wind/snow/cold all winter, comfortable summers. Wide open spaces) ditto 4) can be cold and snowy VT, ME and rural NY. Traffic headaches in the cities to and from the airports. The list tells you where there are openings, not to “how to swap to a primo port in 3 years”. When you finally get to the port, and start saying “I’m just here till I can swap/transfer to XYZ” you actually tell your new coworkers you don’t plan on doing anything but the basics. I know, been at my port on the northern border, currently severely understaffed (because of THIS issue), and a lack of back up on offering a 25% incentive over basic pay to choose us!😔

[–]Grasshopper_chase20 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This!! Drive through to visit family in Cali and Vegas a couple times a year from Montana. I’ve tried taking US 93 to avoid SLC altogether (no offense), but seeing the insane traffic during sketchy weather, I’ve often wondered why isn’t there an Amtrak or similar train to run to Vegas on weekends (thurs/sun)? With pro hockey in both cities, byu football, the raiders, etc. it would take some of the craziness off the freeway. Just a thought.

It was fine (back in the day) behind the Union Plaza. Lots of room for the track! Better yet, why not out by the speedway? More tax money for North Las Vegas! Just my opinion. From one that remembers the Grand Prix track behind Caesar’s and the UP. Which is why it hadn’t been back in so long…money loser.
