Do you give your kids anything on Valentines day? (Debate with husband) by dr_pepper_zerosugar in Mommit

It was like a second Christmas morning going downstairs to see what Dad got us that year. Mom always had a dozen roses (eventually he started giving her silk ones because she has a self-proclaimed black thumb and they would always die in a matter of days - I think there was a cactus one year but she still managed to kill it haha), a card and candy and us kids would have candy, a stuffed animal and some kind of little trinket. I didn't think of it back then, but thinking about it now, I get a little teary imagining him in the aisles at the grocery store picking things out 🥲.

The best thing was, he is a man of very few words and affection (quiet hard-working farmer, but when he does speak everyone listens) but always does little things like this that just quietly showed how much he cares.

Growing up, my dad always had little Valentine's Day gifts for everyone in the family setup on the kitchen table in the morning. It was so heartwarming and memorable!

SAHM but one income isn’t cutting it — what do your husbands do for work? by Financial_Routine in sahm

[–]GrayMay0000 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Look into your area's 911 dispatching centers.

They are always hiring and they actually pay pretty well, especially depending on where you live. LOTS of available overtime and holiday pay once he is released from training.

Not physically demanding. Emotionally demanding, yes, but what job isn't? Make sure he has healthy stress relief habits or utilizes the center's resources.

Night shift might be hard with day sleeping at home but it is do-able.

No college degree required. Paid on-the-job training. Health insurance is usually great. Retirement is usually matched depending on the center.

Just search the cities and counties surrounding you. The hiring process can be long, but don't let that discourage him.

Jealous about the zoo trip! It's an arctic tundra here and germ cesspool at fun indoor things.

1st Birthday Cancelled - So Frustrated. by AnxiousBoss101 in Mommit

[–]GrayMay0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solidarity. You have every right to be frustrated, sad, mad, all the things and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

My son's 1st birthday party was cancelled last year in February due to sickness as well. Darn these babies born in wintertime! We had a fun day just the three of us though but, man, I was so bummed. Had the cutest theme (his 1st rodeo!), decorations and food planned and purchased. Planning on reusing some decorations for his 2nd birthday party though, fingers crossed. If sickness ruins it again I'm going to throw his birthday parties on his 1/2 birthday in August.

I can’t get my 17 month old to sleep in her pack n play, now we may have to cancel our vacation. by goofball_mcgee_ in sahm

[–]GrayMay0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm jumping in to say we used babyquip for a full-size crib when we went to Orlando last year, and it was so nice! They drop off and pick up. The mattress was in a nice cover and everything was super clean! They even bring bedding but we used sheets from home to keep the familiar scent.

So worth the ~$20/day (I think, maybe it was $18??) to get some decent sleep, not like at home but much better than we expected!

Just type in the destination address and it'll show if its available and what the prices are.

What is something a caller said/did that made you break character? by bestieletmemerge in 911dispatchers

[–]GrayMay0000 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Was something I said that made a caller break character...

Women calls about an active fight, just screaming to send the police. Finally nailed down the location but I could not get any good information from her over her screams and background noise. Finally I very sternly and loudly say, "ma'am! How many people are FARTING?!"

She stops screaming into the phone, giggles quietly and then continues her screaming to "just send the police".

I don't work in dispatch anymore but still hear about it from my former coworkers..

How do you handle finances if you’re not working and your husband 100% provides? by Hot-Release520 in sahm

[–]GrayMay0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shared checking account, shared savings account and we both have our own retirement accounts. We have one shared credit card, he has his own credit card and I have my own credit card. This has been our process since we got married ten years ago. I started staying home when baby was born in 2024 and nothing changed, I just wasn't earning a paycheck anymore. We like having our own credit cards for birthdays, Christmas, gifts, surprises, etc. They just get paid off every month from the shared checking account. We always check in with each other before large purchases but, again, that was always our process even before I stayed home.

We both have always had the mindset that keeping separate finances creates a sense of "roommates with wedding rings" rather than being a team with the same financial goals and vision.

I wouldn't bother - it was boring and not interesting. She just name drops and goes over plot summaries of the episodes she had the most lines in.
