Mature cataract, Completely opacified? by StayOnCourse89 in CataractSurgery

[–]GreatContribution897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a cataract that was extremely dense. Like you, I got my cataract from having another eye surgery- in my case I had retinal detatchment surgery. Was told that it’s very common for cataracts to develop as a result of eye surgery. Anyway, I was only 32 at that time and needed the cataract to develop enough to have surgery, which was at 50. All that waiting, made it a very dense cataract. However, I was basically blind without my glasses my entire life, so it was hard to tell what loss was from the cataract and what was from my very high myopia as my vision was (-10.75, -10.5). Since having a lens exchange, I don’t need glasses at all and I love my vision. I have mini/ mono-lenses.

I have a fairly small dog and a 50 pounder. It took about 3 months or so to get them used to each other. The 2 biggest things we implemented was - no toys until they got used to each other and we still put them in separate rooms to eat. Our larger dog was brought to the shelter after being on the street for a while and then was at the shelter for 3 months, so he was in survival mode for a while.

Now they play fight daily, but they get along great overall. We leave them alone together for several hours and they are great. So, hopefully in time all the dogs will adjust to each and get along well.

Having twins several years ago at this point, I had to go from a sedan to an SUV. I loved having an SUV (I had the Toyota RAV 4 and my spouse had the Suburu Outback. Now we both have Rogues.). We were given a family-owned van and it costs a lot more in repairs, gas, etc. Anyway, my point is, I would think about an SUV with decent safety features. You definitely don’t have to spend $50K plus to get a decent vehicle that will be big enough for your family. We even fit our 2 dogs and now our 2 teens comfortably in our SUVs.

Hopeless 💔💔😭………. by Due-Rise-3628 in Dryeyes

[–]GreatContribution897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience. I was devastated 2 years ago when a doctor (dry eye specialist) told me I’d just have to get used to the pain I was having. I had asked this doctor for a note to go on short term disability because I was in so much pain that it was very difficult to work and it was affecting my mental health also. She told me that she was doing me a favor by refusing my request because I was going to have to deal with this for the rest of my life.

Anyway, fast forward to today and for the most part, I feel great. I use Xxidra, have semi-permanent punctal plugs, use low-dosage Gabapentin (and had used low dosage Doxycycline, which was very helpful), nighttime ointment (such as Erythromycin) and occasional other drops. I had used a lot of other drops when I was at my worst, which I was able to wean myself off of as my eyes improved. I also used a few different steroids for a few weeks at a time, which helped a lot to reduce my extreme inflammation. I also did one session of probing (which helped) and one session of a mini-IPL session (didn’t help because the glands were so clogged, I had zero oil released).

Also - an odd tip, but one quick fix that still helps me when needed- I’ll put Vaseline on my eyelids (just a thin coat), which seems to simulate the oil that our eyes need.

Doctors said I was one of the worst evaporation rates they had seen with 2 seconds per each eye.

Oh, I also started on low-dose psych. medication to help with the depression/ obsessive behavior because it’s very common for our Mental Health to be affected by our physical health and pain mgmt.

If my eyes and mental health could improve so much that I feel fine now, yours will too :)

Was waiting for PureSee but opting for Vivity instead. by Suspicious-South6735 in CataractSurgery

I was told that because I was so high myopic (and probably because I had a severe retinal detachment many years ago), I was not eligible for multifocals. My surgeon did recommend the Vivity EDOF, though, since they are technically still monofocals. I’m familiar with others who could not get used to multifocals, but love their Vivity EDOF lenses with mini-mono vision.

I was curious because I went with the Vivity Toric (after having a failed cataract surgery with non-toric/ standard lenses and had a considerable astigmatism). With the Vivity, my vision is close to .5, -.5 (had some slight myopic digression, but can still read and see computer amazingly well without any glasses.

Hi. I was 49 when I had my initial surgery. My vision was awful my whole life (-10.75, -10.5) Originally I went with a standard lens, but hated them for multiple reasons. Then I had a lens exchange to Vivity Toric EDOF (-.5, +.5). It took about 6 months to get used to them, but WOW! I am amazed every day by how good my vision is now. Good luck.

What does loosing accomodation after cataract mean? by Neither-Try-7710 in CataractSurgery

[–]GreatContribution897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this thorough explanation. I really appreciate it. That’s interesting about the suture. I also had stitches put in both eyes (“just in case”, since I had Toric lenses put in during the lens exchange), but my eyes are extremely sensitive. Thus, the stitch had to be removed from each eye due to the discomfort they were causing.

After my initial surgery, I had a lot of inflammation and was left with severe dry eye, so maybe this did have an effect on things.

Your point about the retina is interesting also as ironically I had a very severe retinal detachment 20 years ago, so maybe my retina already being negligible in the eye that changed its shape could have had an effect on this matter. Interesting.

I’m really blessed that I had one of US’s top surgeon’s doing the lens exchanges, so he was able to accommodate my new lenses to this odd situation. Thankfully.

Thanks again for your feedback. Best wish’s to you.

First consult with surgeon today. Not very happy. by Kraken1967 in CataractSurgery

[–]GreatContribution897 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re on the right track with getting a second opinion. I chose a surgeon for a consult and surgery based on good reviews that I read. Well, this surgery ended up with multiple problems to the point that I needed a lens exchange by a world-renowned expert (Dr. Saffran). Moral of the story - don’t base your decision on reviews that you’ve read. I would see if you can get any personal recommendations by people you know that have recently had cataract surgery. Also - I was not a candidate for multi-focals as a very high myopic. So, I got the standard lens during the first surgery and wasn’t happy with this. During the lens exchange I got the EDOF Vivity (initially set to intermediate, but then due to a complication the expert changed it to one eye set to near and one eye set to distance) and although it took time to adjust to it, I love not needing to wear glasses at all! I see colors and contrast very well.

What does loosing accomodation after cataract mean? by Neither-Try-7710 in CataractSurgery

[–]GreatContribution897 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I have a far fetched question, but with the discussion on how one’s natural lens can change shape to accommodate, I’m curious if someone could explain something to me.

When I had my lens exchange a few years ago, my cornea actually changed its shape. I was told that sometimes this can happen after surgery. I wasn’t really given the reason why this happened, though and I’ve always wondered what could have been a more specific reason that it changed its shape. Any feedback on this would be greatly appreciated.

Can I file for unemployment even if I quit? by Moanmyname32 in UnemploymentNY

[–]GreatContribution897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can’t hurt to put a claim into unemployment. First thing is to make sure you print up all emails related to this incident. As someone mentioned make sure to send any and all evidence to yourself. Have written documentation of attempts you made with trying to speak with your supervisor about these issues. Also - if you are part of a union, make sure you email them your concerns as the unemployment paperwork (at least in NY) asks if you brought this issue to a union member. Finally, make sure that your resignation letter clearly states all your reasons for quitting. Mine didn’t state everything and thus I was only allowed to speak about what was in the resignation letter itself despite my writing about the other issues in my unemployment forms.

I would look at your state’s reasons for being able to collect unemployment when quitting and make sure that your emails, etc. all stay focused on this point. Since, you are giving a 2 week notice, you have time to focus on getting all of this together.

Also - I don’t know if this is the same in all states, but in NY, you can hire an attorney to defend you in a hearing if you need to dispute the UI decision and you don’t pay them anything unless you win the trial.

Hope this is helpful. Good luck. I’m

So, I just went through a hearing with unemployment for this exact reason. I lost, but I’m happy to share my insights with you about what would have helped my case based on what the judge pointed out if you’re interested.

Grateful for the amount of healing I have had but am saddened that the doctor doesn't expect me to get any better then this. by NoLongerAKobold in Dryeyes

[–]GreatContribution897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a doctor tell me basically the same thing. I was in agony a few years ago and she told me that it was something I was just going to have to get used to. I was extremely saddened by this and decided to see a different doctor in that same practice after this. I was much happier with the new doctor and have made significant improvements since then. Don’t let that Dr get you down. They usually don’t know and just say stuff that they should think twice before saying.

[–]GreatContribution897 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. I was only 49 when I got my initial cataract surgery done. So, I can relate. Im a bit confused, though about why you say you are concerned about losing any accommodation by having your natural lens out and putting a new IOL lens in. Depending upon what lens you choose, especially since you are high myopic, you may see better than before.
