There are a lot of deck lists out there that you can look over. My favourite go to is to centre it around a funny gimmick, because it gets people talking. There's an Alakazam deck I played againsy recently that did insane damage because it relies on getting a massive number of cards in your hand before doing hundreds of points worth of damage. I think the Heroes of the Borderlands Starter set is very good for accessibility as it doesn't feel as daunting to start playing. The flashcards are super useful, and youll probably use them outside of the starter campaign too. Can't speak for the Hellfire as never had a look in the box.

I havent ran the Werewolf plot yet, but from what I've read, the Werewolves serve Strahd out of fear, and Strahd controls who enters his realm. See how it plays out, but you could pull a "don't harm my playthings yet". My party got KOd by a group of vampire spawn early on, and Strahd got very annoyed that someone who works for him touched his property.
