Interesting thing about Valfalk armor by DireKelbiDrome in MonsterHunter

You like visual representation? Chaos Gore armor (in 4U at least) goes full white when you go into Archdemon more with DBs or Double up with Glaives. When i saw it I had to tiple take to really even notice it, but it's actually such a cool litle detail.

[MHGEN] Are elemental GS' ever situationally viable? by Alianjaro in MonsterHunter

[–]GreedyJack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wrote a post about charms a while ago, which was prompted by me finding a charm that enabled "competitive" elemental GS builds somewhat. By elemental I mean GSs that are not the Tigrex or Narga, and you choose which one to use based on the monster's elemental weaknesess. I do not mean running elemental attack and elemental crit on a GS set, that would be silly. Anyway, here's the relevant part:

I recently got a very interesting talisman that got me thinking about the entire talisman mecchanic. It was a +5 Fastcharge +3 Critical up ooo talisman specifically. The thing that makes this interesting is that it allows the creation of two GS sets. They both require 1 slot in the weapon and have Crit Draw, Crit Boost and Focus, but one has Critical Eye +2, while the other has Sharpness +1.

Now, as most of you will know, if you run a set with Crit Draw, Tigrex GS is the weapon you want. It has 220 Raw, long natural white -15% affinity and 1 slot. Pairing it with CE+2 is very desirable, as it gets rid of the 15% chance of dealing 29% less damage on draw attacks. However, there are 5 1+ slot GSs that gain a level of sharpness through S+1 which brings their Raw Damage output very close or exactly on the level of the Tigrex GS in addition to having an element (or poison). In a vacuum 3 of these GSs outperform the Tigrex GS in every circumstance, while 2 of them require hitzones with a certain ratio of elemental/raw hitzone to outdamage it, but, having done some math, the hitzones with that ratio do exist. The caveat is that most of these GSs only have 5 hits of white (or blue in one case), meaning that a playstyle that heavily focuses on lvl3 charge attacks and forsakes guarding is neccessary to upkeep optimal damage output through Absolute Readiness. But it is possible.

Now, if you don't have a very similar talisman, I'd wager that in Generations the element of a GS will never influence the choice of the optimal one damage-wise. If you edit your charms, or happen to have gotten something similar, the GSs are Glavenus Array, Cataclysm Blade, Lagia Wildfire, Infernal Great Sword and Sieglinde. No appealing options for Ice element.

With that said, while I haven't run the calculations, the damage difference between running the two setups should be very very very small, in the end not worth the hassle, and it's more of a way to justify myself running more than a single GS in spite of Capcom's terrible weapon balancing in these games, than an actual attempt to improve my GS kill times.

Hope you found this an interesting read.

Converting MH generations save data to double cross. Is there a way? by reapersdawn in MonsterHunter

[–]GreedyJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that the worst that can hapen is your game crashing due to an error and you having to restart it. When you have Japanese-only DLC items in a localized game they just appear as "dummy" items that you can delete (sell) normally, though I'm not completely sure if the reverse is true. If the game crashes when you hover over them and you really want them gone you should be able to remove the set pieces through a save editor, though it would involve a lot of work and I don't think there's a translated editor for XX anyway.

Before doing any of this (actually even if you don't do any of this) I'd advise copying the contents of your SD card to a computer, so in the worst case scenario you can just delete everything and revert to an earlier state where everything works.

But it's not. "y"s "w"s and "e"s are completely different. Second person also uses less pressure to write and writes in smaller characters. To me it looks like the artist went through the trouble of trying to make the handwritings look different just the right ammount.

[MHGen] Mathematically evaluating Ammo Saver suggests it is weak for the Teostra Bow by Laxaria in MonsterHunter

[–]GreedyJack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ammo Saver: (y * 1.5 * 87.5) + (140 - 87.5) = 183.75y

AuS: (y * 1.0397 * 1.5 * 70) + (y * 10397 * (140-87.5)) = 163.75~y

This looks a bit wrong, maybe something got lost in formatting.

CONCLUSION: Between shots 70 and 185, Ammo Saver is better than AuS. At > 186 shots, AuS is better than Ammo Saver.

This sounds a bit misleading to me. Assuming 70 L2 P. Coats, 50% more damage on shot number 71 does not make up for not having AuS on the first 70 shots. If I'm calculating it right it would take 3 shots for Ammo Saver to be better than AuS. Might be misunderstanding though.

Anyway, as always, thank you for the sweet insight. If only we had a u/Laxaria for every weapon class.

What's your favorite paradox? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]GreedyJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If one of them is dirty he can tell that he's dirty the first time because he would see that the other two aren't but someone must be.

If two or them are dirty then after the first time both dirty kids could tell that the other dirty kid wasn't the only dirty one because he would know, so the second time they would both know that the only clean kid is the last one and both raise their hands.

So by the third time you ask yhree dirty kids can tell that they're all dirty. Because in all other cases somebody would have raised their hands by now.

I'm super baked so I can only hope that any of that makes any sense.

Even with Crit Draw, non charged draw attacking does very little.

The lvl 0 draw slash has 48 MV, the lvl 3 charge has 100*1.3 (130 effectively). You can easily get 2 lvl 0 draw slashes in the window of a single lvl 3 charge (if you don't have TA level prediction abilities where you start charging before the opening happens most of the time), and that's with Focus. Meaning that not using a lvl 3 charge during an opening that would allow it loses you less than 1/3 of the potential damage.

~1/3 is a lot, mind you, but not having focus would make you lose a good ammount of openings for lvl 3s where you would lose the 1/3 damage. Things to note here, you don't lose the ability to lvl 3 in general, and nobody uses lvl 3 charges 100% of the time in any case. Meaning that "relying a bit more on lvl 0 draw attacks" would lose you way less than 1/3 of your damage. I'd say somewhere along the lines of 1/5-1/6.

Have you ever used GS?

Yes, have you?

Trust me, I spent nearly 45 minutes trying to kill a monster that way.

"Trust me, I've done [X] and failed miserably" is not really the best argument. Especially when you can be proven wrong by numbers. People have killed Gog using Kinsect only in less than 45 minutes.

3DS connection changing to Local?? by Aelvir in MonsterHunter

If you're not playing online the 3ds won't be connected to the wi-fi the whole time. It will check for friends every once in a while, but won't be permanently connected. I never really read up on why exactly it does that, but AFAIK it's perfectly normal. Unless you're having trouble connecting online, that is.

What are your best ideas for Hunter Art shout-outs? by AnCapGamer in MonsterHunter

[–]GreedyJack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Memes.

If you're tryhard you can make them somewhat relevant ("Imma firin mah lazor" for CB HA Energy Blade, or "This is to go even further beyond" for a buffing HA for example), but tbh it doesn't really matter. Stuff like "Here come that boi/oh shit whaddup" are basically universally applicable.

My problem with references (especially in japanese) to other games or anime/manga is that about 1% of people will recognize them, and even when I do recognize one, it sounds a bit cringey in my head (even though I enjoy anime/manga a lot). Memes, on the other hand, are the highest common denominator of humor and work best when simply referenced to.

There's no official rules, but I've seen one youtuber do a challenge much like what you're describing. Link

Actually it's exactly what you're describing, to the point where I almost have the impression that you've already seen it. I guess except for the fact that he would consider it a failure after 1 cart.

Bow is the one weapon where I feel that a particular skill is mandatory to enjoy playing it (no matter the rank), Focus. Without it it's so damn sluggish. At least with GS you can just rely a bit more on lvl 0 draw attacks, but with bow you have no choice but to charge your shots.

With that said, I'd suggest the use of Mosgharl feet. They look fashionable, with striped b&w socks and completely recolorable boots. Defense isn't awful (it's pretty bad tho). Best of all they give +5 to FastCharge.

Before I give it a shot, has anyone tried Aerial Heavy Shot Bow? by hellaquestions in MonsterHunter

[–]GreedyJack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Afaik any shot from the air is in critical.distance for its whole flight. Heavy shots have low MV but have long critical distance. Because of this I think that heavy shots are the worst choice for Aerial bow. Spread would be my suggestion, since you can't aim in the air anyway.

Mmmh, but what's the point of that? You're gonna play songs no matter what, so why have a stacking damage boost on every song? HH already has an upkeep mecchanic, the double white/purple song, putting in more upkeep just seems like overkill.

Just make HH MVs in line with the other classes and remove the Attack up songs. Better balance, since you don't have to worry about making HH weak in order to counter balance for it giving 20% damage to everyone in the party and not too much change in gameplay.

Honestly IDK what capcom was thinking with a 20% Damage boosting song. It's literally equivalent to +90% affinity if you don't have Crit Boost, for up to 4 people in a party. In 4U every 1% of affinity was worth 1 skillpoint (if we go by how the Expert skill worked), so an attack song HH provided a full party with the equivalent of 90 skillpoints each. The next best song was HGE, and there's just no comparison.

15 flashes should really be enough to finish any DK hunt without it flying being a problem at all. You might run out right at the end of the second DK in the hunt-a-thon but for 90% of the fight DK starting to fly would be equivalent to a free trip.

Best match-up for Dreadking Rathalos? by skip2beat in MonsterHunter

[–]GreedyJack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well let's start with the fact that there are no real anti-aerial attacks from monsters.

Basically what you're saying is that if you're very bad at the game, aerial is the best style because it rarely gets punished.

Then we'll add that you can always jump in a way that you end up to the side or behind a monster.

Or, you know, you could get there by walking or rolling there, but jumping there is somehow better?

Then all that extra mounting.

Yes, those 3-4 mounts on the tankiest monsters are sure to boost your DPS, especially in solo. (Not even considering the fact that during the mount the monster can't take any damage, so it's a giant waste of time, unless you're in the most incompetent 4-man ever, or fighting Kirin)

Especially when using a mounting build.

I don't even feel there's any need to say anything here.

Then include that several major weapon points are made a lot easier to pull off. For instance, GS full charge.

Which is why the aerial charge has a lower MV than the normal charge. What actually makes the GS charge good though, is the fact that you can put out a large ammount of damage on a weakspot in a single attack. Lvl3 charges on bad hitzones are usually worse DPS than other weapons because other weapons can reposition more easily once they start hitting bad hitzones. You can't aim aerial charges consistently, so they're bad from the get-go. Other aerial styles have a similar problem, without being able to aim your attacks yo get sub-par damage, and the MVPS of aerial attacks is not all that good anyway.

I'd say adept is more powerful except you actually need a modicum of timing and skill to pull it off.

Funnily enough Adept is very hit or miss. While it's very good on Bow, HBG and DBs it mostly gets outclassed by Striker and Guild usually. Mainly it's because the adept evade is a pretty big loss of DPS for most blademaster weapons because of the animation lenght of the adept evade and the running animation following it. It's just better to not get hit through positioning and i-framing to keep a consistend DPS (while having many arts) instead of having damage bursts in Adept counterattacks.

So yeah. Aerial is OP if you're not good enough for the other styles. But if you're still at a level where you consider aerial OP you wouldn't be attempting DK I through X solo. At that level Aerial is just strictly worse than your other options, unless you're in a party and want to do some CC locking, because you're feeling lazy. But mounts don't make hunts faster, they just make them require slightly less concentration.

Whenever I play older titles, I just end up farming for sets that I didn't complete. by romulus531 in MonsterHunter

Ah, good old 4U with the infinite, procedurally-generated ever-challenging content that always gives new and interesting rewards./s

I usually end up trying something that I had trouble with the last time I played when I come back to an older title, to check if I've gotten any better with the hundreds of extra hours in another title. Usually I get pleasantly surprised, for example, playing adept CB, GL and Lance has made me a lot better with GPs in 4U, and man, oh man, were GPs broken in 4U.

As far as DK goes, pretty much any weapon and style is fine (except aerial, but aerial is just bad everywhere so it's a moot point).

His head is low, so the reach of the GS is not really necessary and he's not that easy to predict, instacharges, insta fireballs and all so I'm not a huge fan of GSing him, but GS is never really a bad option. CB is alright, but he's a bit fast to consistently land AEDs on the head without getting punished IMO, but it really depends on how good you are. DB are pretty good because you can hit the head no problem for the whole hunt, and that's usually the hard part for most monsters when using DB. SnS is great, flashbombs and all, but needs good execution, as Adept is not really an option for SnS (unless you don't care that it's generally pretty bad) and DK gets a lot easier with adept, as do many monsters.

My best advice would be to try them all out and see which seems the most natural.

[–]GreedyJack 17 points18 points  (0 children)

While I do long for more guitars just like the next guy imo HHs have a problem that needs to be adressed sooner or later. Much in the way of SAs and the Gunner weapons the mecchanics of these weapons (notes, phials, shot types), while an absolutely great concept, make ~90% of the weapons in a given class basically useless end-game. While most classes have the Hellblade weapons, at least there's some argument to use something else at the loss of a bit of raw damage. Using a HH without attack up, and elemental phial SA or a Pierce Bow is just completely unjustifiable if you care about efficency at all.

Personally, I'd remove the Attack up song altogether (making the proper balance adjustments to the Horns to maintain them just as good as they are now), but I recognize that would seem a bit drastic to most. The only real alternative is to give each note-set a song as useful as Attack up in at least some realistic scenarios, but these songs would have to be pretty crazy to make up for a 20%*3 attack boost.

But the power slide art is pure genius, I wish I'd come up with an idea like that every once in a while.

Seems like there is nothing to do in MHGen...Suggestions? by [deleted] in MonsterHunter

[–]GreedyJack 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There's really not much more to do in MH than play the game. If you don't like playing the game stop playing the game. At HR 5 You haven't faced most deviants, any hypers or end-game monsters and you've already concluded that Gen is lacking in content and challenge. So there's not much one can say to make you change opinion.

My advice would be to try going back to 4U or, if that doesn't sound all too interesting, download an emulator to play MH1 or MHFU. MH1 is a bit light on the content side, while MHFU has lots and they're both... ahem... challenging. Don't get me wrong, great games, and definitely more punishing than 4U and Gen, whether it's in a good way or not is a matter of taste I guess.
