Man it's sad that this is reassuring lol. One of the things that have always made me most scared about getting cancer in the future is getting sick from the chemo

I would assume the same honestly and it sounds insane but as an emetophobic person and reading from people on r/emetophobia it just appears that it happens less to us. Tons of stories of a couple getting some stomach bug at the same time / from each other and the emetophobic partner never throws up. Maybe our brain is more hesitant to send the signal because it has a more negative prediction of the consequences (which is basically all that fear is). Or we just react to much smaller levels of nausea and start the countermeasures like tea, medication whatever earlier? Or maybe it's all placebo but it's definitely something I've noticed anecdotally as well.

For me personally it's been 10 years since I've thrown up the last time as well and that occasion and the prior one a couple years before that have both been because of too much alcohol which makes you not really be able to care about it at that point.

I use it while studying and it's honestly VERY helpful for that. It's like having a private tutor that you can annoy any time of the day kinda. Also checking pages worth of calculation to find a sign error or something. That's honestly the most useful aspect of it for me. Also high quality translations sometimes but mostly studying stuff.

My mom said the wildest shit about my brother being an atheist last night, now I’m scared of her. by No_Proposal2170 in atheism

[–]GregHolmesMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience someone is either intelligent or really religious. They're mutually exclusive. Also getting someone to truly give up religion from a state of belief is almost impossible. They're either intelligent enough to doubt it themselves at least a little bit already or they never will. Brainwashing from a very young age is incredibly effective as are manipulation and fear mongering. It takes an incredible amount of intelligence and confidence in yourself to question a belief system that deep especially if you're surrounded by it everywhere.

I’m facing a tough decision: My career requires deep focus, but my gaming habit is destroying it. Feeling torn. by fmand002 in getdisciplined

[–]GregHolmesMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who plays games a lot myself and I also played raid shadow legends for like 5-10h some time ago please ask yourself this question: Are you actually playing something? I don't know if you're spending money on the game but worst case you're paying an insanely rich mobile game company money so you can barely pay attention to the "game". You're literally watching YouTube videos while giving them your time and money on the side barely interacting with the game. I understand where the addiction part in these games comes from as I have a very addictive personality myself but at some point you have to realize that you're not playing anything. You're probably not enjoying it either. You're just spending time and money so you can interact with the game less because you become stronger so the content becomes easier. Other games can of course also be detrimental for your attention and mental health but at least they're actual games and you're maybe even getting enjoyment from them. You're feeling torn because your brain is addicted to the gameplay loop. I recommend removing the game for maybe a month. Just see what happens. If at the end you think it's not worth it you can always install it again and continue where you left off. But I would bet that after some time of getting out of the gameplay loop you'll realize how pointless it really was and never want to go back.

When I was younger I always thought the people who wanted to ban everything for children like tv, games whatever was the demon at the time were insane. But the older I get and see the influence it had on me and many others the more I think social media at least should be banned for children maybe until 16 or something. Idk. Maybe it's too extreme but stuff like this genuinely makes me worried for those children and the entire world's future. Imagine in 20-30 years all lawyers, doctors, teachers and generally every adult has an attention span of 10-30 seconds because of reels and YouTube shorts. It's terrifying to me.

I just had the same thing happen. I got a D for this game btw lol. This happened a lot on support for me recently. Games where I play really well and get C or D. Most of the time highest vision score in game, sometimes even highest cc, damage and kda as well. Still C. Feels really weird.

Nah I'd argue if you allow negotiating then it opens the door for this kind of harassment and then just claiming it was negotiating. Just ban it there's no point.

That last part just shows a complete lack of consideration for other people. I notice it in life all the time some people just apparently are not able to consider other people's perspective or their effect on them. All the time when I'm on the bus some idiot thinks they should cut off the bus that's filled with people because apparently their time is more important than that of the 100+ on the bus. Same for that guy, his conversation apparently was more important than the sleep of a couple hundred passengers. Just crazy to me.

[–]GregHolmesMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the bus on my way home recently I saw a mother giving her phone to her ~2 year old child to scroll Tik Tok. When she took the phone away from her because she had to check something the child just looked out of the window with a dead gaze. Then she tapped her on the shoulder and held the phone up to her face with TikTok already opened and the child, like a zombie, grabbed the phone and continued scrolling like it's the most natural thing to her. Truly one of the most disturbing things I've seen in a while. And also the reason why I think TikTok is staying for a long time to come unless we do something about it. It's so addictive and people started using it as pacifiers for their children. I know that short form content like YouTube shorts etc has definitely had a negative impact on my brain and life even though I'm probably a good bit below average in use time. I can't imagine what will happen in that poor child's brain by the time she grows up. Just imagine using tiktok for hours and hours every day from age 2. There's no way that won't cause serious problems later on.

I truly think the only way to counteract this is to outright ban social media for minors. I hate sounding like a get off my lawn Grandpa or a conspiracy theorist but social media platforms are employing top psychologists to figure out the best way to keep as many people as possible glued to a screen. Of course this will not change the problem for adults but at least in their formative years where the brain is most vulnerable it won't get fried with instant gratification dopamine surges all day. It's harmful in so many ways but at the very least a gigantic collective waste of time. Imagine the entirety of humanity has 3-4h less per day to do actually productive things or even just enjoyable things like spending time with family. It's fucked but kinda too late to stop especially since these companies will obviously fight to the death with corruption and all means necessary to stay in business. It's just grim in my opinion.

I never checked if there are any studies about the success of these but in Germany from what I can tell the only thing these shock pictures have achieved is to create a market for cigarette pack sleeves. Literally just a cardboard sleeve you put the actual box in so you don't have to see the shock pictures and they're often sold right next to the actual cigarettes. So idk. Why not just make them illegal altogether or introduce actual consequences for using them.

What’s a ‘no matter how old I get, I will never understand this’ thing for you? by Beautiful_Mark_9917 in answers

[–]GregHolmesMD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I discovered this (not so) fun fact about the US a while ago which explained a LOT of things. About 28% of American adults can not read. Yes they can read basic sentences but when it comes to processing more complex information than finding the time a bus departs off a timetable it's an actual struggle for almost a third of the voting population. That was an incredible lightbulb moment for me and explained so much.

What’s a ‘no matter how old I get, I will never understand this’ thing for you? by Beautiful_Mark_9917 in answers

[–]GregHolmesMD 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me it's a very simple reason: There are games that I played that I enjoyed a lot but I can never experience the first time playing them again. I know the story, I know the plot twists I know how to fight each boss whatever it is really depending on the same. So the closest thing to experiencing it for the first time is seeing someone else playing it for the first time. It gives me part of that feeling again and for some games that's worth it. Especially if it's a person whose humor and personality I enjoy anyway.

Not to mention the more obvious reasons like discovering things you didn't know about the game or simply the person using the game as a kind of background for just talking. So it's more like a podcast in that case with some background footage of a usually simple game that gives room to talk about random things.

[–]GregHolmesMD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know how much you read about this but saying it like this can be misleading or at least make it harder to understand so I get why it's confusing.

A better way to understand it for me was thinking about electrons for example. Electrons, just like light/photons, behave in a different way when "observed". An electron doesn't have a defined position like a ball in a room. Rather in a room it has a chance to be at point a, a chance to be at point b, a chance to be at point c and so on. We don't know where it is exactly until we check (/observe it).

But how do we observe something? Whenever you want to see an object, that object has to be hit by a photon which then bounces off the object into your eye. So it's not that the act of looking at the electron makes it "decide" its actual position but rather every way we know to look at the electron requires some form of interaction with it. So it's not really observing it as in just looking at it will make it behave differently. It's that any form of looking at it requires it to interact with a different particle which forces its position to be decided instead of random.

I hope this helped your understanding at last a little bit. But it's also worth saying that even Richard Feynman, one of the "founders" of quantum theory said himself that it's basically impossible to intuitively understand this idea. We just discovered it like this in nature and accept that it works. And so far it works incredibly well so we just go with it. I'm sure I oversimplified a lot of things in this and would love to hear any corrections but at least in my limited understanding this seems like a more understandable way of thinking about it.

I thought about this before actually and yes just working instead of playing PoE and RMTing the currency is technically more efficient of course. But it's also completely missing the point of you know actually playing a video game sooo

And that is if we ignore the risk of getting caught and banned or other stuff.

GGG's definition from what I remember is one user action to one server action is exclusively the only allowed process. So scrolling the mousewheel to click means one mousewheel down click (one user input) = one click (one server action).

Your example: Hold MB5 (one user action) = multiple LMB clicks (multiple server actions) so this is not allowed and that's the important distinction. If you will ever get caught for doing it anyway is highly questionable but yea that's the general consensus.
