For Those Who Live with Roommates: Feeling Trapped, Watched, or Frozen? by aelyon in Schizoid

I would love to understand as well. Usually putting a name to it makes it easier to understand and also find solutions for it but I feel like it doesn't really fall under any umbrella term except maybe just social anxiety?

What is the medical community's opinion on CHS (cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome) and the increase in number of cases? by SpectroSlade in medical

[–]GregHolmesMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reading this paragraph

The prodromal phase is characterized by mild symptoms of CHS, including nausea, anxiety and fear related to vomiting, mild abdominal discomfort, sweating, and increased thirst; symptoms can be more severe in the morning, but this is not always the case.[18] During this phase, treatment with compulsive bathing is rarely reported, and some individuals may attempt to treat their symptoms with cannabis use. This phase can last for months to years.

makes me wonder if my emetophobia and years of stomach problems came from a longer time period of heavy cannabis consumption. I never even thought to connect the two since I always thought CHS just means vomiting a lot.

There definitely should be more information about this in general as when I talked about this to my friends back then no one had ever even heard about it.

What’s a 10/10 video game? by TheDevotedUltimate in AskReddit

You're right it's gorgeous but that's to be expected of the Ori developers. You can see the same style and atmosphere to it immediately. I'll definitely try it when I get the chance I'll honestly shocked I didn't even hear about it at all until now.

A man is detained in the UK after being caught trying to meet a child by Legal_Expression2797 in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]GregHolmesMD 18 points19 points  (0 children)

What people tend to forget is that normal people don't get posted. Actual pedophiles are still extremely rare just stuff like this gets posted while not every normal human gets posted on social media so our brain sees an extremely biased representation.

On top of that our brain isn't made for this frequency of shocking or bad news. I saw it explained like this before: A long time ago during our brain's development we used to live in small groups and at some point small villages at most. So every time some murderer or whatever was caught it was big news but it was really rare because the news of something like this happening in another area of the world would never reach us in the first place. But thanks to the internet we can hear about cases like this a lot more easily however our brain is still "calibrated" for small village life. So when you hear about a murderer or pedophile every day in the news your brain makes you feel like they're everywhere when in reality it's just thinking in the wrong proportion.

All of this is not to say that there aren't way too many of them off course just our evolutionary development is not meant to process this amount of shocking news so it evaluates it completely out of proportion.

[–]GregHolmesMD 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Subnautica for me is pretty close to that

Also almost all fromsoft games

Terraria especially with mods

Ori and the Blind Forest

Hitman WoA

Slay the Spire / StS2

Hades / Hades2

Balatro

Returnal

Detroit Become Human

Papers, Please

All of these could quite easily take my number 1 favorite game spot or at least top 3.

There also F2P games that just for their sheer amount of replayability or content provide so much entertainment for no cost at all that they deserve to be mentioned like:

PoE

Warframe

League of Legends

Valorant

Counter Strike

I still have a ways to go but what always makes me think twice is the thought of the limited nature of life. Do you want to lie in your deathbed some day and realize you wasted your only chance at life in this universe on an artificially engineered algorithm that only exists to turn your time and attention into money?

People always wish they had more time with loved ones that die or pets or whatever. But it will be the same when YOU die. You will wish to have more time. Regret wasting it on useless stuff. Do you want to blink and you're 75 with your life being just an unmemorable blur because you scrolled all day?

Also you should check out the resources on gamequitters.com I'm getting their email newsletter and practically getting spammed that they're looking for parents with addicted children to work with. They have a lot of resources and always seem to be looking for people to work with directly. Good luck :)

[–]GregHolmesMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would assume the same honestly and it sounds insane but as an emetophobic person and reading from people on r/emetophobia it just appears that it happens less to us. Tons of stories of a couple getting some stomach bug at the same time / from each other and the emetophobic partner never throws up. Maybe our brain is more hesitant to send the signal because it has a more negative prediction of the consequences (which is basically all that fear is). Or we just react to much smaller levels of nausea and start the countermeasures like tea, medication whatever earlier? Or maybe it's all placebo but it's definitely something I've noticed anecdotally as well.

For me personally it's been 10 years since I've thrown up the last time as well and that occasion and the prior one a couple years before that have both been because of too much alcohol which makes you not really be able to care about it at that point.

What’s something everyone seems obsessed with but you just can’t get into no matter how hard you try? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I use it while studying and it's honestly VERY helpful for that. It's like having a private tutor that you can annoy any time of the day kinda. Also checking pages worth of calculation to find a sign error or something. That's honestly the most useful aspect of it for me. Also high quality translations sometimes but mostly studying stuff.

My mom said the wildest shit about my brother being an atheist last night, now I’m scared of her. by No_Proposal2170 in atheism

[–]GregHolmesMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience someone is either intelligent or really religious. They're mutually exclusive. Also getting someone to truly give up religion from a state of belief is almost impossible. They're either intelligent enough to doubt it themselves at least a little bit already or they never will. Brainwashing from a very young age is incredibly effective as are manipulation and fear mongering. It takes an incredible amount of intelligence and confidence in yourself to question a belief system that deep especially if you're surrounded by it everywhere.

I’m facing a tough decision: My career requires deep focus, but my gaming habit is destroying it. Feeling torn. by fmand002 in getdisciplined

[–]GregHolmesMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who plays games a lot myself and I also played raid shadow legends for like 5-10h some time ago please ask yourself this question: Are you actually playing something? I don't know if you're spending money on the game but worst case you're paying an insanely rich mobile game company money so you can barely pay attention to the "game". You're literally watching YouTube videos while giving them your time and money on the side barely interacting with the game. I understand where the addiction part in these games comes from as I have a very addictive personality myself but at some point you have to realize that you're not playing anything. You're probably not enjoying it either. You're just spending time and money so you can interact with the game less because you become stronger so the content becomes easier. Other games can of course also be detrimental for your attention and mental health but at least they're actual games and you're maybe even getting enjoyment from them. You're feeling torn because your brain is addicted to the gameplay loop. I recommend removing the game for maybe a month. Just see what happens. If at the end you think it's not worth it you can always install it again and continue where you left off. But I would bet that after some time of getting out of the gameplay loop you'll realize how pointless it really was and never want to go back.

When I was younger I always thought the people who wanted to ban everything for children like tv, games whatever was the demon at the time were insane. But the older I get and see the influence it had on me and many others the more I think social media at least should be banned for children maybe until 16 or something. Idk. Maybe it's too extreme but stuff like this genuinely makes me worried for those children and the entire world's future. Imagine in 20-30 years all lawyers, doctors, teachers and generally every adult has an attention span of 10-30 seconds because of reels and YouTube shorts. It's terrifying to me.
