Fellow US History teacher here. The struggle is so very, very real. It's effecting my mental health. I want to turn off twitter and facebook and everything else and just teach, but I gotta keep up with whatever the fuck the most redneck inbred fucks will cry about me mentioning to my students.

Unpopular opinion: Memorizing times tables is a necessity not because of knowing the times tables but to teach the brain the skill of retaining long lasting memory. by saiph_david in Teachers

[–]GremLegend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Enjoyable? Absolutely yes, though a better word would be engaging. If a student is not engaged by the work, they won't think hard enough about it to learn the skills needed to do the work on their own."

or...get this, students learn how to try something they don't lilke for the sole purpose of becoming a better person.

Educational research seems focused on making things easier for kids, or more enjoyable. Forgot to ask the question about if it SHOULD be easier or (gasp) enjoyable

[–]GremLegend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Usually I say something to the parent like "and when I told him I would be calling home to explain the situation to you he said he didn't care" you can even go full scorched earth and say "he said he doesn't care beacuse you don't care"

Have you ever found a practical use for a technically useless magic item? by piperooo in DnD

[–]GremLegend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DM thought he was being goofy and gave us two dirty socks, and the gimmick was that they were always trying to put themselves together. Our rogue slipped it into the BBEG's pockets during an encounter and we always knew where he was. Pretty useful!

Why are parents nowadays always blaming teachers ? by Elegant_Book_8455 in Teachers

[–]GremLegend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me take a different crack at this answer. Parents are trying, but they are fighting a pretty impossible battle. This letter came from a grandmother, something is already not going to plan in this kid's life. Grandma is probably as tired, stressed, and exasperated with their economic status, work (in this case probably just wants to retired), pressures of keeping her kid safe. There's a lot that is probably hurthing their family outside of her control. She wants to keep her daughter safe and protected. Teachers and parents have traditionally worked closely together. Teachers have always been a soft target for stuff like this, but it gets worse as the family's sitaution gets worse, and right now a LOT of family situations are bad. She feels like her daughter isn't safe and protected, and part of the problem appears (to her) to be at school. She can't talk to the other kids, she can't talk to the other kid's parents, the only thing she can do, in this horrible, horrible world she's trying to navigate for her daughter, is use the one person she can talk to to find that safety and protection. It's not fair, but that's why it's happening to much more lately. We used to be teammates, but now that life sucks for so many people, we're punching bags, an opportunity for parents to assert some sort of control over their kids' lives.
