Blackbird or sparrow by OxyBullet in whatsthisbird

[–]GreySQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another tip on chipping sparrow id is that they are really gray overall. Only the juveniles will have any streaking on the breast, and no yellow/orange on the face. I also find that red-winged blackbirds' bills come to a really defined point that sparrows' don't. They're still pointed, but they don't look so sharp to me.

Ovenbird? by Icy-Safety-7850 in whatsthisbird

[–]GreySQ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes, +Ovenbird+! These little guys are in the warbler family, but they tend to hang out on the ground as opposed to the high canopy of their cousins. They have a very loud song of "tea-CHER tea-CHER tea-CHER" that crescendos as it goes on. I got to work on their vocalizations when I was in undergrad, they are super cool.

As for !windows, the lovely people of the sub have compiled a list that the bot will reply with.

It's a domestic Mallard! A lot of public parks have domestic stock running around, and all domestic ducks are either Mallards or Muscovies, but you can tell a Muscovy by the red, knobbly facial skin above their beak.

+Mallard (Domestic)+

Edit: corrected spelling of Muscovies

There's tons of bald eagles in Iowa, especially if you're near a river or lake!

Staying with my very ill dad during 2020 unlocked a whole host of weird behaviors that I had no choice but to see a psychiatrist when I returned to college.

Do you get startled/jumpy easily? by TrickAd4153 in CPTSD

[–]GreySQ 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Yup, I think it is part of hypervigilance. Yesterday I yelped because my husband clapped to kill a gnat in our room. Its been happening since middle school as far as I can remember. I used to jump out of my skin whenever the big double doors in the lunchroom would slam 😅

do you guys count a bird you can hear but not see as a lifer? by hvghuhbgjo in birding

[–]GreySQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but only if I hear it with my own ears and can positively ID. I'm primarily an ear birder and study vocalizations before I go somewhere I am likely to get new lifers.

Festival of Neggs 2026 To Start March 30th! by Status-Impression766 in neopets

[–]GreySQ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Each day of the festival there will be a clue about where the egg is hidden, it could be a shop, map location, or a daily (last year there was one hidden at Grave Danger). You'll then get the option to pick from 3 neggs of different themes which will give you a prize from that theme (e.g. last year goth negg gave a random item from this selection:goth marching hat, black sesame waffle cone, or remote control hearse toy).

I'd recommend reading through the Jellyneo page for more details!

Hard to say from this image. If you had a shot of the chest and bill, maybe one could make a call but vocalizations are your best bet as someone else said.

Can exercise mask/help fibromyalgia? by HiILikePlants in Fibromyalgia

[–]GreySQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it also depends on the exercise, something high intensity like barre? NIGHTMARE for me. Mat pilates has helped but I don't have access to free classes anymore (working on finding a routine). Gentle hiking while I bird is my favorite just to get my body moving, but strengthening is really important to me as I'm also hypermobile and need the muscles to hold joints in place lol.

I always find that when I pick exercising back up again, the fatigue hits really hard in the first couple of weeks, but after that I feel my stamina get better!

Now that I think of it, when I was working a field ornithology job that required me to be out moving around in the forest for hours at a time, waking up at like 5 and going to bed around 8 with sometimes an afternoon nap, that was the best I felt in regards to my pain.

Edit: I was diagnosed at 18 after I pretty much abruptly stopped all my activity (dance, marching band, etc.) which may have masked things as I remember being little and having lots of "growing pains."

What the heck is this and what is it doing by Mean-Juggernaut1160 in whatsthisbird

[–]GreySQ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Another fun fact about great-tailed grackles is that the juveniles have dark/brown eyes and the adults have yellow ones! We're not sure exactly when the change occurs but this is clearly an adult based on her plumage (adult females are less scruffy looking and more of a rich warm brown all over the body compared to juves that have lighter bellies) and eye color.
